REWATCH: "fire dogs/the littlest giant" (1x04)
while i wouldn't consider either of these segments bad, i do think they both suffer from pacing issues. just in different forms. fire dogs tends to draw gags out while the littlest giant feels like there's a bit of lag between jokes. i'd still consider both passable at least.
the beginning of fire dogs has this moment where the animation appears timed to the background score, which is pretty neat, but the timing is SLIGHTLY off so it isn't conveyed especially well that it's intentional
we also get a callback to the pilot here with the "first material possession" bit.
i also like the bit where ren's first instinct upon hearing the fire alarm go off is to hide under the bed. very doggy of him if i do say so myself
mrs. buttloaves is a character i really don't like, the joke with her comes off as very dated and misogynistic, and this scene does get dragged out too long. but i do love the part where ren just Gives Up and throws the trampoline to the side, i cannot blame him for that one
moving on to the second segment of the episode, we get quite a bit of padding in the first two minutes since they reuse the intro from robin hoek (just with a moment or two cut.) once the episode proper begins, though, the pacing improves a little.
the gag where stimpy cries over a photo of the giants beating him up may or may not have formed the basis for my sense of humor btw
also the scene where he finishes his letter and then just eats it. he's doing a good job i'm proud of him
not much more to say about this one from here. the ending's nice. i like this painting.
fire dogs is a bit more memorable in concept, but i think the littlest giant is the slightly better-executed of the two.

REWATCH: big house blues (pilot)
okay time to actually rewatch from the beginning lol. starting with the pilot episode.
this one is interesting because while you can see how the full show developed from it, it's very bare bones and the tone is a little different from the series proper (which makes sense since pitching r&s as their own thing wasn't the original plan.) this is most likely because stimpy is much more of a prop to showcase ren's weird personality here. he only has 2 lines of dialogue if i counted right; to be fair ren wasn't supposed to have quite as much dialogue as he does either. several of his lines were clearly recorded after the animation had been finished.
in terms of art style i'd say it's a bit homier than the full show, if that makes sense? a little warmer. ren is much more canine here and it's very charming to me. stimpy is closer to his final look i would say, but is definitely a bit lumpier (in general, not just this Extra Lumpy screencap.) many of the backgrounds are also much more abstract. there isn't a lot of perspective drawing or objects to look at, which i think pulls more from the flatter 1950's trends in animation. clone high recreated this look as well with its environments.
the pilot also has that pretty sweet moment where ren refuses to leave the pound if stimpy can't come too, which is neat i think. the first thing of note is that ren cares A Lot and he's REAL mad about it, which is very cute, but it's also surprising that we see a scene like this before the show was fully developed. i don't know how much influence vanessa coffey had over the pilot, though i do know she was the one to suggest a show about these two characters in the first place. but iirc, she also gave the major push for ren to have his nicer moments. so i'm not sure if this was included because coffey wanted it, or because john k. bluescreened and forgot his deep hatred for any form of pathos, or what. but i do think the dynamic between r&s is why the show was the most immediately successful of the nicktoons when it premiered, as the first real episode also focuses on their relationship.
anyways, that's all i have to say for now! may do these daily, or just about.
