Sneak peak for Star Trek : Athena, Ep 1 - Just Another Day

Miram glanced back at the woman as the corners of her painted lips turned upward. She reminded her of a barn cat that liked to play with mice before biting their heads off. It was an unnerving thought.

Many of her former peers had told her that she had a horrible judge of character. She just hoped for the sake of her sanity and career, she was wrong about her assumptions this time.

“Oh, boy. Here we go.” The man next to her looked unperturbed and went back to reading something on his PADD.

“Rank and name, kid,” she said. “Quickly.”

“Ensign Tobin ch’Zynes. Operations.” He rattled out. “I’d say ‘Pleasure to meet you’ but you don’t look very happy to do so.”

The woman chuckled. “Oh, a wise ass. Haven’t seen that before. Gotta admit, that’s pretty ballsy.”

Tobin shrugged, “I aim to please, Ma’am.”

Miram stepped in, sensing the storm gathering behind her eyes. “I’m Ensign Miram Tauri, ma’am. Engineering.”

“Oh, yes. You’re both new. I am Lieutenant Elaine D’Aureville. Navigator.” She gently nudged the man next to her who shot her an irritated look. “This delightful man here is our wonderful doctor, Michael E. Jenner. He’ll be the one to fix you up if you get into trouble. You can call him Mike—“

“Don’t call me Mike,” he said, putting his PADD away, giving up on reading. “It’s either Doctor Jenner or Micheal.”

Elaine snorted, nudging his side with her elbow. “And you tell me I’m uptight.”

He picks up her smoothie, swirling the blue and purple concoction. “You are.”

Miram cleared her throat, her own strawberry smoothie forgotten. “So…what’s it like being on the Athena?”

“Finally, something interesting to discuss.” Tobin leaned forward. “It can’t be as bad as the rumors I’ve heard.”

“Well, kid.” Elaine said. “It’s definitely something.”

Miram frowned at Elaine calling her kid.

“Define ‘something’,” Tobin said.

Elaine just grinned. “Trust me, you’ll find out. It's not like you have anywhere else to go.”

Miram and Tobin exchanged a look.

“She’s exaggerating,” Michael said, taking a sip of his smoothie. “Mostly.”

If I was bonded to a Vulcan and they were knocked unconscious, I know my catch phrase would be to whisper: “oh no, my wifi connection.”

Are T’Lera and Syvar married or something? Knowing Vulcans it kinda feels like they are…

Wow! Right off the bat!

I don’t want to spoil too much but yeah. Kinda of, it’s complicated. There’s more than meets the eye with these two.

I had the most fun writing them and their scenes. Vulcans are fascinating.

Will we be seeing any of the original characters? Or will this be independent?

They’ll be a few cameos but I won’t tell you who or why, you’ll just have to read to find out.

Star Trek: Athena is independent, it just takes place in the Kelvin timeline but the Enterprise and its crew are mentioned given how famous they are in this universe.

So…how many episodes are in season 1?

Season one of Star Trek: Athena will have 11 episodes total.

The first episode will drop on April 10th.

I always viewed it as more of a test of character than ability. It should encourage out of the box thinking but instead it confines you to a set of rules that results in a supposedly unwinable outcome.

The funny thing is, I think the Kobayashi Maru is a very odd test, psychologically, depending on what it’s actually trying to determine. It changes over time.

Particularly after it’s been around for a while, you know it’s unwinnable going into it. Not only does that promote a sense of fatalism, but it paradoxically absolves the participant of any responsibility. If you can’t win, then you can rest secure that it wasn’t your fault, your choices didn’t matter, and the system was rigged against you. It’s not an especially good lesson to teach, though I suppose it does get you ready for evil Starfleet admirals and bureaucracy.

In a way, what Kirk did was more than change the conditions of the test for himself; by opening up the possibility of winning, he changed the psychological value of the test for everyone who came after him.

This raises the question: what is the Kobayashi Maru test really trying to measure, and what kind of captain is Starfleet really looking for? Someone who will accept an unwinnable situation with grace, or someone who knows the situation can’t be won, but fights anyway?

…or, possibly, someone who can change the parameters of a situation before it even happens?
