For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.
It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.
Examples (all done by me):

Here’s an example for how you can use it

Okay, so y’all know fantasy name generator, right?
WELL THIS FUCKING WEBSITE HAS MORE NAMES THAN I COULD HAVE EVER IMAGINED
They have names for different fantasy games. They have names for different shows (including ATLA which I will be using for my story thank you~). They have names divided by culture. They have names divided by D&D races. They have names for EVERYTHING.
So please, just share this. With everybody. Cause this could help so many folks out (like myself) who struggle with naming characters/places.
WAIT I THOUGHT OF ANOTHER USE
Trans and non-binary folks who need names? Look here! Yes, the names are often divided up by male and female names, but fuck gender. You can name yourself an elven name and be fucking amazing.
Just… check it out please.

Scottish Gothic
You try to leave, over and over, but whenever you’re away you get sicker and sicker, wasting away; it only stops when you come home. This Land owns you, flesh and blood, body and soul.
Every day you commute to the nearest city for work, every night the croft in the distance glows with light and activity… that croft has been empty for over 200 years.
When hiking it’s important that you never leave your tent at night; the sounds of battle on the wind are said to be an illusion, but the glens smell bloody first thing in the morning.
The woodlands near your house seem to change entirely with the seasons; if you step off of the path the hairs on the back of your neck begin to rise.
That stump that looks like an empty chair? Don’t sit on it.
When walking home by the river you see an old woman in the streetlights, washing clothes in the river. As you draw near you recognise your jacket - it’s saturated in blood.
New Years Eve is a dangerous night, that’s why we flock together to drink and sing and dance - don’t leave before the bells, and if you do, never look behind you.
Your house is older than your bloodline. When it groans in the night stay very still - stone doesn’t creak, remember?
If you find silver coins in the hills don’t take them; bury them with a drop of your blood and don’t look back. Put a hill or running water between you and it before you sleep.
If you find an empty campfire be wary; ask before you sit, eat nothing that isn’t yours, and leave a little for the patron.
The glens may look small on the map, but whole armies have disappeared into them without a trace; close your ears to the voices of the earth when you walk here. Remember you are mortal.
Not all Celts were warriors, but the peaceful passed on long ago; do not treat with the dead unless you understand their ways - there are no noble savages here.
Where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean you can see the patterns of fate in the sea foam - do not stare unless you are prepared to know.
The night of midsummer is short and full of trickery; do not sleep in the open.
The hollows of the earth are not meant for you.

Tips on Introducing Backstory
Tumblr media
Patreon || Ko-Fi || Masterlist || Work In Progress || Studyblr || Studygram
Only Share Details That Shaped The Characters
Backstory is one of those things that really irks readers when it’s obviously unnecessary. Yes, you can argue that all backstory has contributed to a character’s personality, but it’s important to make the distinction between what’s relevant to the character overall and the character during this specific conflict.
Telling Can Be Okay
Clarity is important when it comes to backstory, and when you’re telling the reader information that was revealed in a moment prior to the current timeline, you want to be concise. Long-winded flashbacks full of irrelevant details are often irritating. Yes, there’s a right way to do it but it takes lots of practice and reworking to get it right, and flashbacks are frequently used by writers who would rather show the moment than cleverly work the information into a present situation, and it’s very easy to tell when this is the case.
Showing Can Be Better
Again, things like flashbacks or scenes that are obviously reminiscent of past events are perfectly okay when it comes to providing information, but you must accept that it takes more work, time, and snipping in order to make it concise and effective.
Its Purpose Is To Create Context
Context is everything, and when you introduce backstory, it should reframe the current situation and conflict with new, relevant information for the reader. There should be an “oh shit” moment when a reader connects the dots between two things that didn’t quite make sense until they knew the context. That’s the purpose and effect of backstory. As you can tell, this is a delicate, strategic device.
Weave Sparingly
Backstory should be placed strategically and very sparingly. You shouldn’t use backstory to explain everything, because that leaves no room for interpretation or for the reader to ask questions of the plot. Weave carefully, use sparingly.

My Personal Character Files: The 6 Box Method
This is for my science fiction WIP, so some things may need to be added/modified depending on your genre. I will also include a screenshot of an example at the bottom so y’all can see how I set it up in my Doc.
1. The Quick Ref
I use this as the first page of my “Character FIles” Doc.
I put all my important characters in a list, then add their height, age, and the page their complete file can be found on. This is helpful when I need to know if a character would have to crane their neck upward to look another character in the eyes. Comes up more than I’d have guessed.
Tumblr media
2. The Individual Profile: 6 Box Method
I add and subtract stuff based on how important the character is. Without further ado…
Box One: Reference Photo
This is where I add in any actor, model, drawing, etc that I base the look on. When I don’t need one, sometimes I’ll put in a picture that represents the character’s style.
Box Two: The Introduction
Full Name
Nickname(s)
Age
Occupation
Current home
Situation: How do they enter this story?
Motivation: What do they want?
Favorite quote/saying
Biggest strength
Biggest issue
Strongest trait
Box Three: Behavior
Personality
Habits
Ambition/Short and Long Term Goals
Greatest fear(s)
Phobias
Biggest secret(s)
Social skills
Interior talents
Box Four: Background
Home moon/planet
Important history
Family
Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Colleagues
Finances
Education
Phys. Health/Mental Health
Religion
Romantic/sexual preference
Interests/Hobbies
Box Five: Appearance & Physicality
Height
Body type
Skin tone/Ethnicity/Species
Facial description
Prominent/distinguishing features
Dress
Mannerisms
Physical talents
Box Six: Speech
Normal tone
Language & accent
Favorite phrases
3. The Example

“ماهرخ”
— Mahrokh, literally “moon-face”. A Persian name chiefly for girls. The moon is associated as one of the highest levels of beauty in Persian culture. To be named this is to be called the silent beauty of a full moon on a clear night. (via baklavugh)
