chris_bloodfilms Met my hero on a train.
This story is long so scroll if you cba reading.
Itâs 2005, a band explodes on MySpace. Theyâre dressed like you and their lyrics are a mirror to your life. Bleeding heck, who the fuck are the Arctic Monkeys?
After 19 years on repeat itâs now 2024. Myself and @/conor_bloodfilms are travelling
back from Paris.
We arrive at Gare Du Nord and Duffy stops in his tracks. He whispers to me âI think thatâs Alex Turner.â âF**k off!â I immediately reply. I gaze over at a guy wearing a leather jacket with long brown hair, his face adorned with aviators. We should probably stop staring as itâs getting weird, sexually and aggressively weird.
Turns out it is bloody Alex Turner, the man whoâs provided the soundtrack to my life! He strolls past and disappears into the Parisian platform crowd. A missed opportunity.
We board our train back to London. We look to our left and thereâs Alex. Sitting in his seat accompanied by a notepad. Heâs probably writing the next Arctic Monkeys hit âTwo gawping pricks on a trainâ. We really need to stop staring.
I tell Duffers Iâm going in, he stops me. Reminds me that Iâm a fully functioning adult and not to create a scene. Christ, heâs right! I feel like Iâm 15 years old again, someone get me a Strongbow and whack Dancing Shoes on, kin hell lad!
Eventually myself and Con engage, itâs a surreal experience. Alex is polite and returns conversation in a soft friendly manner. The whole situation is just bloody lovely.
I awkwardly ask if I can take his portrait, fully aware that it could result in an awkward exchange and destroy this wonderful moment. He smiles and obliges, heâs effortlessly cool, asks for direction and I take a few snaps.
We disembark the train, I felt quite emotional and thatâs embarrassing to admit. Maybe it was the jet lag, the caffeine and croissant overload? Or maybe it was just the rekindling of my youth.
This all might sound trivial, however, for me these portraits are deeply personal serving a reminder that life is a series of fortunate events and when fully appreciated can conjure up some pretty awesome memories.
Happy birthday to The Age of the Understatement, which was released on April 15, 2008.
âDoing the Shadow Puppets album was when I started to think of what I did as songwriting. Songwriters always reminded me of that kid at school who would go around with his guitar, like, âYeah, songwritinâ man,â looking wistful. That wasnât meâthose kinds of people put me off. In the early days, Iâd write a bunch of lyrics and almost look at them as a sort of joke, to make the rest of the boys laugh. And then weâd jigsaw all these parts together to make the tunes. With the Last Shadow Puppets album, Miles and I took a much more traditional approach, thinking about melodies and chords, melodies and lyrics. That opened the door to more of a purist approach. Every time you write a song, youâre looking for some sort of perfection, and you never quite reach it. Youâre always looking for that extra missing piece.â
Original manuscript of the track The Jeweller's Hands (2008/2009)
"so many great songs have been written here and this is a really great one @ arcticmonkeys the jeweler's hands.i still have a lot of handwritten original lyrics from any band that is cool enough to leave them here for me. i love hearing the @ bechstein.official piano on this track, and all others it appears on. it's my favorite piano sound in the world. fred and i bought it at @ shop_angelview thrift store after @ vicwillums found it and suggested we buy it to record it on her album she was readying to record here, musings of a creek dipper. our friend, the extremely talented and awesome @ trinashoemaker produced and engineered it.. i couldn't be happier that many find this little house in the desert inspiring. i know i have since the first day i walked through the door. love to all"

âWhen I stop and think of my life, sometimes itâs been absolutely chaotic⌠like a bit of a rollercoaster at times. Youâve been doing this since you were 17, so youâve experienced a lot. But when I hit 30⌠I kind of wanted to learn more things about myself and understand my bad traits and not be afraid to go inside and better myself. When youâre in your late teens, 20s, itâs two fingers against the world and fuck everyone. Donât get me wrong; itâs still in me. But Iâm not afraid to take a step back and not get clouded by any nonsense. I donât need any bad people around me; I keep my unit tightâfriends and stuff. Iâm not searching for anything, and Iâm just content with who I am as a person. That helps me write songs easier.â
