Brown will be replacing Gen. Dave Goldfein. The vote was 98-0. Vice President Mike Pence presided over the confirmation in the Senate, a rare move due to the historic vote. Brown also joins retired Army Gen. Colin Powell as the only black men to sit on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Brown currently serves as the Commander of Pacific Air Forces.
Why It’s Important:
It has not been uncommon for Trump nominees to face resistance during their Senate confirmations. In the past, Democrats have attempted to delay or obstruct some of his picks. Critics have accused them of partisan motives, as in the confirmation process of Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
But the historic confirmation of General Charles Brown was achieved with 100% support of the Senate, with both Republicans and Democrats casting their votes.
This comes at a time when Americans struggle with renewed accusations of racial division. Black activists have protested in cities nationwide, demanding radical change in the face of perceived racial injustice.
This vote is a rare moment of unity between two parties deeply divided.
