Indistractable by Nir Eyal Book Review
Indistractable Review by Nir Eyal Review
Indistractable by Nir Eyal is an incredible book which outlines the general thinking/actions of human beings today, he answers the questions we are thinking constantly, Why didn’t I finish this task today?,Where did the time go?,How did I fall into the online vortex and completely zone out?.
As humans our lives are pretty much ruled by tasks which need to be completed by the minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, most of which fall into a plethora of categories,Professional Tasks,Personal Tasks,Tasks for Family,Tasks which need to be repeated such as cooking and within those tasks are sub tasks such as recipes, cooking instructions, utensils which are needed.
As Eyal states in the book, every distraction is due to a level of discomfort. The new normal is to avoid what makes us uncomfortable and look for excuses as to why we couldn’t accomplish the task at hand, with the constant distractions in life our technology (phones, television, computers) as accessible as ever its much easier to find ways to prolong the tasks at hand. When uncomfortable the mind seeks distractions!
Urges are the catalyst for discomfort.Learning to ride the wave of urges and not giving in, becomes a skill.Try to put your urges on pause and delay gratification by putting yourself on a timer.Waiting till later and trying to grind through the task will sometimes allow you to flourish and complete the task. Willpower is considered another emotion. Willpower is an infinite emotion and can be tapped upon in your time of need, when urges continue batter you like a wave.
I myself have had extreme moments of discomfort particularly with exercising. As someone who used to exercise regularly and consistently,I find myself at times completely unmotivated or lacking the proper goal to push myself to new limits. Its become easier to spend hours on Instagram, watching algorithm specific videos on Youtube and losing hours upon days to the next video on repeat, or the new lazy excuse streaming services such as Netflix, Disney Plus ,and HBOMax promoting the term “binge watching” and encouraging us to stay seated in place while these mind numbing shows go season to season.
Reading Indistractable by Nir Eyal the best takeaway would be for someone like myself to delay gratification and grind through the task at hand while placing all my excuses on a “imaginary leaf” sending them downstream while working towards my goals.
Anyone reading this continue to flourish and continue staying Indistractable.
