Damn, it feels good to draw and do small tattoos sometimes. I’m grateful for all of my clients and larger scale projects but sometimes the little ones are just as fulfilling. The lines and black are healed but the color on the rose and mandala is fresh. Tinkering away on custom work like these Deathless pieces is so damn satisfying. 2 sessions. I love finishing pieces in one session but sometimes the skin just isn’t doing what you need it to and sometimes the client is just tapped. We all have better days than others in the chair; am I right? What’s nice about breaking up tattoos into multiple sessions is being able to induce less trauma for a better heal AND, more importantly, see what needs tidying up via smoothing things out, sharpening areas while maintaining areas of softness for dynamics, and pumping up contrast and saturation. I mapped in the whole piece and did the cool tones in the face and most of the darks during the first session. All of the warm tones are fresh, here. This is a pretty small tattoo, for me; on a slender, athletic female. It was tremendously fun to design and create and tie in to a Jack Skellington (on the outer arm) that I did a year or two back. This is the only photo of me with my original Basquiat DEAD ICONS painting. It took a month of late nights to complete this piece, in secrecy. Only 8 people saw the original before I destroyed it. This photo was taken two days before it’s fiery desert demise, right before it was professionally scanned & digitized and hours before seeing Slipknot with a few of my closest homies. Setting this piece on fire was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. I’m grateful that I was able to document the blaze (with the help of some friends) and create a short film about it.
