no i do find johanna’s character fascinating. she was raised by the man who sent her father to prison, raped and drove her mother to suicide, and refuses to let her out. she wants to experience the world that everyone else in the play is cynical about, except for anthony. she endures horror after horror, locked up and caged out of benevolence or another kind of revenge, punishment from the judge for the crime of not wanting him. just like her mother she is a victim of sexually charged violence. everything is about her- sweeney’s obsession, anthony’s love, the judge’s lust- and everyone thinks theyre doing right by her in their own way. sweeney almost kills her, the judge locks her up, and anthony? he’s foolish. he doesn’t know how to keep his mouth shut. she’s the one who ends up killing the man in the asylum when he cant and that is HER taking autonomy in a story that is quite essentially about her. she is never given an inch on her chains and in the end she’s the one who breaks free.

so I'm rewatching sweeney todd again, and one thing I'm noticing that's really fascinating is the motif of the human body as a commodity. obviously, we have sweeney todd and mrs. lovett grinding people into meat pies, but it goes beyond that, too. we see the body commodified or objectified at every societal level. pirelli sells human urine as a "miracle elixir," and mistreats toby. mr. fogg's asylum not only abuses the inmates, but sells their hair to wigmakers. lucy attempts to sell her own body as a prostitute. judge turpin's status and power gives him the ability to sentence executions, as we see him do because he wants to leave the courtroom early. at the highest level of power in the play, he's also shown to be a sexual predator.

with all of this considered, the show poses an implicit question- the cannibal pie shop is obviously terrible. lovett and todd are both monsters- with lovett in particular treating everyone around her as a means to an end. but compared to the rest of society, including the most accepted institutions within it, are they really uniquely monstrous?
