NATIONAL DAY OF PUPPETRY, 04/22/2023
I don’t know if there is a difference between puppets and marionettes. I suspect one involves hands inside a doll or mechanism, while the other is controlled from strings above or sticks beneath (or behind). It doesn’t matter. I had several hand puppets that I used to entertain my kids while they were growing up, and I enjoyed telling stories with their help. What were your experiences with puppets? Did you like them, hate them, embrace them, or avoid them?

To tide all of you over, and in light of the fact that every display of these marvelous machines on tiktok is framing them as giants or figures of fae magic or the second coming of Jesus or whatever, let's take a moment to appreciate the INCREDIBLE puppets coming out of Royal De Luxe and Compagnie La Machine. I know they can also be counted as animatronics/robotic but...fuck it, I'm covering both and they're essentially puppets too.
You'll notice there's lots of Long Ma. I will be doing a Long Ma specific post.

The theater world, whether society likes to admit it or not, is a forerunner in the realm of innovation.
Theater requires creativity. Not just in how a human can act as another, or in elaborate sets or songs. But also, when it comes to bringing nonhumans to the stage. Some productions, like Sight & Sound, may go an easy route, and use living animals when they require a donkey or a dog. But for many theaters, they instead turn to puppetry.
When you think of puppetry, you may think of sockpuppets, or sesame street, or perhaps lambchop. And these are impressive, in their own right, but perhaps not quite my focus.
The horses of Warhorse. King Kong from the King Kong musical. Sven from Frozen. The wonderous creations of Compagnie La Machine.
These are what capture me. These are what entrance me. And these are what I wish to share with all of you.
I am Ashkarn, lover of the artwork that surpasses the canvas, and dazzles the world from the stage. Thank you for joining me as I gather my knowledge and interests together.
