Today i found out we could make buttons to sell at the exhibition, so i made four designs because i was told we have loads upon loads of blank buttons, all they really are are just elements of the prints reused in order to make the buttons but i think thats why they work so well, especially with the lettering and train lines.

Finally worked out all the kinks and decided to meld together the ideas into three prints so i can more accurately get across my idea and messages, making it so the journey and the end of them are signified greater with my grandad and how all these experiences shaped him. And how they shaped the people around him with all the interconnected pathways and places meaning that even if you don't know the person, you have memories of those places and can share some sort of togetherness and joy with that person.

After a few weeks of working on the prints i've been able to narrow them down to these two designs that will be used in the gallery, obviously i've done a lot with the train line piece adding in more lines rearranging them and adding the black country changes over the top of them to still have elements of the flag in the print as well as using the colours of the flag by eye-dropping an official graphic of it.
I haven't done much with the diabetes awareness print but i think it looks good enough for the purpose it serves as well as keeping the point obvious and simple, maybe in the actual exhibition i will add more of granddads things to the banner with the actual objects on top of them or edit some of the images on photoshop to properly make them look graphic-y and kind of sewn on.

Was finally able to make a better diagram for the gallery submission, fully labeled and with a list of materials i am going to use for it such as the walking stick itself, the pot, the tinnes and even the dirt i am going to use for it.
The only thing i haven't added is how the prints would look next to it because it would make this particular diagram muddled and confused, but in my head they'll just be behind where the piece is on the wall with the centre piece being the Diabetes awareness and memorabilia print, with the black country and train line prints flanking it.
All together i think it will be a very nice commemorative piece that will look nice when displayed with everything, i haven't set up any of it at home to avoid the hassle of disassembling it but i still think everything is gonna go as planned and if it doesn't it doesn't lol.
Like the Name of the piece says, Swings and roundabouts.

In preparation for the gallery i was able to get the Gallery flyer posted at Skatehut Halesowen on their events and flyers board, this is great because it's right at the front of the store and that obviously means a lot of foot traffic.
Not just that but i've seen a lot of local artists pass through those doors looking for cool art if it's on the boards themselves or on the walls done by local artist Andrew from 88 skates, so hopefully they see it and we get more artists making the trip to Birmingham considering The store in near blackheath and closer to Dudley casting us a wider net for people to find us and come down to have a look at it.
Plus it helps in my opinion that theres so many boring or uncreative corporate flyers around it because peoples eyes will be drawn to it.

Haha forgot to put these in earlier as well but these are the Robin sketches i did for the Robin themed banners, to be honest in hindsight it looked way too christmasy and i think people would think more of Christmas and then it would throw off the entire meaning of the piece.
I quite like the sketches still however and would like to include them somewhere else, maybe in another graphic for another project or even for some thing more traditional and hand drawn, i think i did well trying to get across a more geometric version of a robin mostly because it's one of the styles i'm interested in so i'd be adding in some more of my inspirations rather than just my Dad and grandads.

Putting this here because i spoke with one of the tutors and we came up with a couple ideas.
He really liked the idea of the togetherness and interconnectedness but in regards to unfinished business and chapters in our lives, Leaving the Walking stick unfinished might be better to show that that chapter of history is over the man who worked hard to get to where he was is gone. His journey over, no longer needing his walking stick.
So despite everything i think i might leave his Walking stick unfinished, i put a new lick of paint over it but it will be left unfinished.
I think i like that better because how i would finish it wouldn't be the way my Grandad would've, and tbh i don't want an earful from his ghost when i mess it up.

Revised how the prints where going to look because i felt like the other ones didn't properly inform people what the project was about so i revamped them, adding two prints that where representative of my grandad specifically using both his possessions and the colours and circle of a Diabetes awareness by official diabetes websites based in and out of the uk, bringing awareness to the condition that sadly took my grandads life eventually.
Then of corse we have to keep the black country flag because it's an important flag and in my opinion a piece of history to both our rights and wrongs being a historically industrial province, and then the train lines i've added destinations and stops where people will recognise that have memories for not only me but for other people to recognise and come together.
over all i think this is much better than the other ones i've come up with because it links everything together much better than what i was originally going for.

Some of my grandads old stuff i wanna include in the Exhibition in some way, his hiking stick being the focus point of corse the others i will put on prints to try and get them featured as well, i think it'd be nice having them all included to show a bigger picture of what was left behind and the history that they all have.
If i can't i'm just as happy to feature things around the black country and i already have several prints based off those so it won't be any trouble making more.
And just for clarification it isn't a nazi book it's Rommel: Dessert fox a book following a British comando unit sent to north Africa to assassinate the "Dessert fox" Erwin Rommel.

Putting this here because i forgot to put it at the start. This is all to be put into a gallery exhibition, mine being based on how the places we grow up in and the people we're surrounded by influence us and shape who we are and the things we pick up from them.
An interesting idea that was brought up to me was leaving my Grandads projects and things unfinished showing how that chapter has ended and some times we can't finish everything, and how even that can effect the people because i felt the need to finish it even though that was definitely not his intention or ever his plan.
Which i'll have to consider more today but i quite like the idea of leaving them unfinished because that's how they where left.

Chameleon effect:
After some research i found out that the act of copying others was dubbed the chameleon effect and it started out as a theory in 1997 that people like to mimic what they see as the old adage "Monkey see monkey do" states, but was later developed into a proper theory where we mimic people unconsciously in order to both fit in with a chosen group and deepen connections that we have with them.
One such study had the participants listen to recorded words that where stereotyped as being related to old people such as, wrinkle, memory, Florida and sentimental and it was found that when leaving the room they walked slower and acted more sluggish, keep in mind none of the words where related to being slow, weak or frail. Proving that even when just hearing words like that we tend to mimic the people that we relate to them.
Later on this was tested again with two people and they where found to copy the mannerisms of the other subconsciously, tapping their, crossing their arms and other things like that, too small to regularly notice but still interesting all the same.
This is incredibly interesting to me and i would love to incorporate this information into my work and the phycology of it, though it is already based off of that effect and is deeply personal i think it would be good to sacrifice that personal touch to make the art more appealing to a wider audience, though at the same time i do like the idea of keeping it more related to the black country and displaying how it effects me since people from around the area may relate.

Another cut off sketch but again it gets across what i want in the exhibition, i want the cane finished and wrapped in the black country flag sticking out of a black plant pot dripping with the black country colours, the length of the cane painted with vines and quotes while the base is braced with Cider cans, cinders, ornaments and a hollowed out red pepper.

These are the final designs that i have for the Prints i'm gonna use for the exhibition, these i think encapsulate my theme and the message i'm trying to get across through this piece.
Obviously i had to keep the black country flag, nothing needed to be changed since i liked the design though if anything i could hide the third chain thats supposed to be in the flag somewhere in the exhibition for people to find!
The skull one i kept to keep the black country colours at the forefront of my exhibition so they don't get washed out by other colours or overwhelmed, and to hammer down the idea of looking to your past and your roots.
Lastly i think the train lines where good because it gives off the idea of progress but through an old system of travel that scientists and people where saying would go obsolete thanks to advancements in technology, but it's survived through the progression and people looking back to this older piece of machinery and making it better.
Each one is to the proper scale i need it to be so i don't have to do any adjustments for when i print them out, so it'll be easy enough to do.

This is just a basic floor space diagram of everyones spaces, i'm told that everyones needs power to work so it's most likely that theres will be placed along the walls where the outlets are, but mine doesn't really need any power unless i decide to add lights, so mines most likely being placed in the middle.
Which i both like and don't like, it's good because of the position and the nature of my project, everyone can circle around and see every bit of it, but then as well being in the middle (Potentially) puts a lot of pressure on mine to be better than i'm already planning it to be.
Though nothings concrete yet i believe this will be how the gallery turns out with the others needing plugs and the merch spots being, in my opinion, in the best places they could be.Plus with the banners we're printing it could do a lot to help section off each piece from one and other.

The next artist i had a look at was the contemporary minimalist Architect, Tadao Ando. In contrast with Tony cragg he mostly does geometrical buildings with harsh corners and wonderful lighting, though he also uses nature in his artwork he more integrates the building into the surrounding landscapes making them feel otherworldly.
I really like this because of how it so naturally blends in with the scenery which i've seen naturally in the black country area because of the wide range of vegetation and their over growth in the nature reserves and parks. i'd like to incorporate that in my work to properly get across the idea that the mistakes we make in the future are usually planted in the past, With so many people looking to the future to change how they act or feel while not looking to the past to see why they feel like that in the first place.
And small tidbit but i believe he was one of the inspirations for the animus black room sections in Assassins creed revelations, the architecture in the dream sequences feeling eerily similar to how Tadao creates his buildings.
But either way i'm excited to try and incorporate his style in my gallery submission, Unfortunately I couldn't find an official website for Tadao Ando but he has plenty of galleries and projects to look at including his Church of light, The chapel on the water and MPavillion.

One of the artists i looked at was Tony Cragg born in liver pool most of his brutalist art uses things like concrete recycled materials and to create natural yet brutal sculptures which i find mesmerising and quite fun to look out, trying to follow the edges and ridges of the structures with the eye is confusing and quite entertaining.
I wanna include his style of statue making through the uses of colour and shape language, trying to create a more natural feel with rigid objects like bricks, metal, ceramic and other things like that.
Though obviously i would like to use more colours and shapes that i can relate to the area where i grew up around so instead of green i may use red, white or black.
Apart from that i would like to include more traditionally brutalist shapes like square's, rectangle's and triangles giving my piece a more industrial feel than a completely natural one.

After this i decided to go out and take pictures of the local area, to try and get a better feel of the aesthetics and colours i'll have to use, i may have grown up around the black country but you don't really notice the design elements of a town or the forests unless you look for them.
At this point i realised that it has a kinda overgrown but brutalist vibe most of the black country being filled with nature reserves and forests that are overgrown and unkempt, hiding old mining facilities, train tunnels, canals and strange abandoned structures.
Below is an example, one i believe to be an old maintenance room for the canals that run under many of The black countries hills and valleys connecting us with most of the midlands, and a great mix of both brutalist and efficient building and overgrown nature.
