Pineapple Express Pineapple Wheat Ale - Whistler Brewing Co. - Whistler BC
Sweet and tropical tasting. Really captures the aroma of pineapple more than the taste of it. I was eating some burritos with it, and it was a real nice complement to the spicy food. Summery and refreshing.

In that country where wine had been known from the very earliest times, the fermented ‘national’ drink was nevertheless beer, with a cereal base and prepared -following refined techniques- in over thirty ways: ‘white’, ‘russet’, ‘light’, ‘dark’, ‘cloudy’, ‘sweetened with honey’, and ‘flavoured’with many aromatics, sometimes ‘diluted’ but often ‘strong’. Several people at a time would happily drinkit, sucking it out of the jar through tubes which were provided at their lower end with a kind of grille to filter impurities.

Canada Day Tasting Notes: Tin Hat IPA - Townsite Brewing Co., Powell River BC I managed to write very few notes for this beer. I'm going to blame it on me being patriotically buzzed, and manning the barbecue. (Save On Foods has pretzel buns now, they are delicious). I made my burgers from scratch, out of both Beef and Pork because I believe that the more animals you can eat in one sitting, the better. So what I did write down about this beer is that it was quite dark for an IPA. In my experience, IPA's tend to run towards the gold side of the beer spectrum. They do call this one a 'West Coast IPA', so maybe that has something to do with it. I also wrote down that it was very upfront with the hops. Only I underlined instead of bolded very.  Sorry for the bad beer-journalism, but it was a holiday.

Great label design from the Half Pints Brewing Co. Labels are printed but give the feel of a handwritten label. Suggests that ‘hand made’, ‘home brew’, but still a craft beer feel.

In Quebec we have awesome beers too. The company Boreale does great stuff.
Thanks for the tip! I will try and find some. I personally think unibroue is one of the best brewers in the world. Quebec knows its beer.

Tasting Notes: Lagunitas IPA, Lagunitas Brewing Co. - Petaluma, California I've heard it said before that Canada doesn't know how to do a good IPA. Now, I've found many tasty India Pale Ales made close to home, but nothing quite compares to what they make down south. I blame Keith's.  This IPA tastes like what I imagine when my tongue buddies are craving some IPA. It's almost like it's the baseline for a good IPA, the textbook example. I wouldn't say it's perfect per se, but you could compare anything to it. This one is like the Lagunitas, but more hoppy. This one is like the Lagunitas but lighter, etc. It's fairly mild, not powerfully bitter, a pleasant amount of hoppy bite, and has that floral lemony essence. It's just, nice.

Brewers yeast eats sugars and produces alcohol - that’s well known. Yeast also gives off CO2 in rather copious amounts during primary fermentation. You see that here as part of the blow off of a 400 bbl (12,000) gallon fermenter

Tasting Notes: Cheakamus Chai-Maple Ale - Whistler Brewing Company, Whistler BC Woah. This beer is quite unlike anything I've ever had before. The dark brown colour reminded me a lot of no. 3 syrup. The real dark stuff that they get from the last maple syrup harvest. The maple component of this beer really gave you the aroma of that dark sugary sweetness. The beer was a definitely on the sweet side, but it was balanced out by the cinnamon/clove spice added by the chai component. It made it very drinkable, but really this is a beer for sharing. Getting into my second glass was a bit of a challenge, as I had had enough of it by the first. I'd recommend it to share with a group of friends, ice cold around a campfire with a backdrop of stars. I've also been watching a lot of Bob's Burgers lately. It makes me want to pun.

Tasting Notes: Vanilla Oatis - Oatmeal Stout with Vanilla - Ninkasi Brewing Company, Eugene Oregon Oregon. The promised land of the craft beer lover. Ninkasi is a name I'd heard put out good brews, so I gave this interesting sounding beer a try.
I expected it to be something similar to a winter style ale, such that Tree Brewing or Granville Island puts out seasonally, but really this was a different beast all together.  Its' colour and head reminded me of cola, that dark brown syrupy goodness. But really, this was a delightfully mellow stout. It wasn't too sweet, but didn't have the burnt bitterness you sometimes get with darker beers. It was just real nice and mellow. The vanilla component wasn't too overpowering either, and was more of an aromatic experience. After taking a sip of beer, when you breathed in through your nose you got a good waft of vanilla bean. I'd recommend this beer to the person in your life that always says "I don't like dark beers". This one will change their mind.

I want to try this just because it's called Swamp Head
Tumblr media
in other news i tried swamp head’s midnight oil stout. a native gainesville oatmeal coffee stout at 5% abv. really rich coffee flavor right off the bat, and stayed pretty strong through the whole glass.
next i had a brown ale, which I can’t for the life of me remember who brewed it. but at 5.2% abv not too bad.
then i knocked back a pair of good ol’ Narragansetts.
tall pall’s proved to be a pretty fun place, nice big open atmosphere and some fun table games. I wish they had the sound on for the whole game but still a good time with some good friends and my boy.
I really like this whole exploring new beers thing. quite fun and I’ve shocked myself and my liking of darker beers. it’s a whole new world once you move on from natty light.
