“Oh em gee, so cute!!” Pepper gushes, eyes landing on the handed beaded dress, admiring the craftsmanship for a long moment before her gaze switches to the customer. 

The best thing about owning your own one of a kind boutique? Admiring the fashion. Every day is Fashion Week at Pep In Your Step, and another exercise in restraint as she inevitably reminds herself it’s bad business to buy all of your own product. However, she might have to make an exception this one time because this particular piece really is so cute... but it’d be even cuter on Pepper. 

“But, um, I really think you’re better suited for something like...” her eyes scan the floor quickly as she grabs the dress in question and replaces it with something off the nearest rack. “... This. That color is like soo flattering on you,” she says, the lilt of her voice raising at the end of the sentence as though it were a question despite the fact that she presents it as fact.

“Thank you so much Leonard, you’re a doll,” Pepper coos at the UberLux driver as she strides into the lobby her building, and he really was. “You’ve more than earned that five star rating. Just hand the bags to Frank, sweets.” 

There’s a momentarily lag as Leonard scopes the lobby for a man named Frank. and while as a feminist she should be annoyed by the assumption, Pep instead finds herself chuckling, waiting until she had poor Leonard’s attention before gesturing towards the plaid wearing brunette fixing something or another with the tilt of her head. Men, she thought, with a good natured roll of the eyes. 

“She’ll help me from here,” she insists, even if Frankie doesn’t know it yet.

Chasity was very good at approaching people at the park, whether they were strangers or not. The blonde would walk up, ask if they’d like to do a Youtube video with her, and see their response. Most of the time the Youtuber got a no, but today she was asking anyone, as she needed to assemble a group of – well she was hoping at least twenty people would take part in this video. “So, think dodgeball – but with balloons full of paint. You’d be dressed head to toe in white clothing, and we’d see how colorful you’d be by the end. What you think? Interested?”

“Mmhmm, yeah,” Pepper’s eyes narrow, lips purse, head tilts -- like she’s really considering the offer, while they both know (or should anyway, like hello what about her looks screams dodgeball? answer: nothing) she’d never be caught wearing white after labour day. “So like, I love this idea,” she starts, hands pressed to heart and tone sympathetic, “buuut unfortunately I just got a manicure, so...” She shrugs, as though the two things are in any way related.

As much as Tommy enjoyed a night out spent drinking and smoking, he also needed some relaxation time. Constantly partying with no breaks made for a very sad Tommy and that’s how he discovered yoga. Now it was an essential part of his life and he tried to dedicate at least half an hour of his time everyday to it. He should probably start looking for a place that’s a little less…public l, considering yoga for him consisted of wearing only a very tight pair of briefs but that was a problem for another day. “Hello, hello”, he called out when he noticed someone watching him from afar. Tommy was so engrossed in what he was doing that he didn’t even bother to check for their reaction. “You want to join me? I call this the back stretcher.”

“Mmm,” Pepper hums, managing to sound less disturbed by the visual attack than she feels. Her nose wrinkles, head shakes, lips purse just so as she searches for the right words. “Um, so I love that for you -- so fun! -- but unfortunately I don’t do yoga with... drifters.” Pepper frowns at the man, something overdramatic and obviously insincere. “Um -- but! I would love if you could take your back stretcher off my stoop. Thank you so much babes!”

BACKGROUND.

pepper grew up in greenwhich, ct in a house big enough to hold three families. the hawthornes come from old money. the kind of old money nobody really knows where it came from, but pep likes to tell people her daddy was responsible for inventing dr. pepper, making her the name sake. 

didn’t spend a ton of time with her parents growing up, both too busy making business deals and impressing at society events. thus, pepper and her older brother were primarily raised by their nanny who gave them as much love and affection as a woman who spent more time at work than she did with her own children. as a result, pepper doesn’t have a huge sense of familial obligation -- or an obligation to others in general. that’s not to say she’s cruel, or distant -- in fact, she can be very generous with her friends, particularly those who live in the south of kingsboro - but rather that thinking of others and how her actions might affect them doesn’t come naturally. 

that being said she is relatively close to her brother, who seems to suffer the same affliction as pepper. this leads to many fights that often end with an ‘UGH!’

all things considered her childhood was pretty average. or average by wealthy white girl standards -- ballet and piano lessons as a young girl, flashy sweet sixteens and cotillions and flashy sweet sixteens in her teen years.  

has a history of dating the wrong people -- often finding herself attracted to people who are much more interested in having a good time than they are in her specifically. this has lead to an assortment of heartbreaks on various continent and once abandoned in a chalet on the alps. but this hasn’t stopped her from putting herself, and her heart, out there again and again. 

took her six years to graduate college, mainly because she spent much more time partying and spring breaks then she did in the lecture hall. she’s not exactly proud to admit that the only reason she did manage to graduate was paying her peers to do her assignments. so while she is technically a certified, sarah lawrence educated business bitch, she doesn’t strictly know what she’s actually doing. 

so, when daddy lent her the money to open pep in your step she was determined to prove herself, and two years later she still feels like she’s proving herself. but the shop manages to make enough to keep the lights on and her accountant says that’s a good thing so by her standards she’s nailing it. 

has been to every ny fashion week since she moved to the city, though she prefers london’s. 

CONNECTIONS.

codependent bestie - these two are OBSESSED with each other. it would honestly be cute if they weren’t so gross about it -- tagging each other on instagram posts and consulting each other on meals.

vapid party friends - these aren’t the kind of friends you’d want in your corner on your worst day or when you find yourself in a crisis. they will turn on you in a second and would have no issues ditching you if a better offer came along, but they take the best bar selfies and have fun together so #bffs. 

sugar besties - much like tom and donna, pepper lives by the mantra ‘treat yourself’, but she learned a while ago it’s not nearly as fun to do alone! this pal from the south side is spoiled rotten, and is often gifted ornate (and probably useless) things. you like baking?! here have a kitchenaide in every color! oh! you like that band? baaabe here are vip tickets to their paris show!

I really have been spoiled, in the sense that “Schitt’s Creek” is really good quality. I want to keep doing really good quality things. It’s been tricky because there are a lot of shitty things out there. Five years ago, I would have been jumping at the chance to do auditions that have been coming my way. I have to be — not snotty about what I do next — but a little bit choosy because I want it to be the right thing. I have to be thoughtful about what comes next.
