i was debating on whether or not i should post this on tumblr but seeing as there haven’t been posts about this yet, here it is. i’m exposing my real location and nationality but it doesn’t matter.

if you have been active on twitter, you may already know #savemyanmar is trending. long story short, there has been a military coup. several nations have released statements but i want to share insight on what’s happening in the country.

memes about a coup have been circulating around for a couple days and when i slept at 2 am last night, we were still under the rule of the National League for Democracy (NLD). while they are not technically democratic, they are the closest we’ve got. when my mother woke up at 6 this morning, she was notified that the country was now under the rule of the military.

banks services are no longer available. wifi was cut at around 7-8. some people got wifi again earlier but many got it barely thirty minutes ago. this is bad for businesses especially ones that require international communications. additionally, international students like myself are experiencing anxiety; how do we pay for and attend classes if we’re not sure wifi is a given?

myanmar has a long, complicated history with military governments. the last time the military went into rule was in 1962 and only stopped in 2011, following the 2010 elections. there was a huge protest in 1988 lead by students that resulted in lots of death. during the military junta, resources like rice, water, oil, were scarce. the gist is military rule is bad for us.

all of my followers are not myanmar citizens, i’m sure but as part of the international community, please help us. here is a petition that you can sign (although i’m not sure if that can do much). there may be protests in front of myanmar embassies so look out for those. most of all, please help spread awareness. 

the people here are coping with dark humor, primarily in the form of memes but we don’t know how long this rule will last, even though the official statement said only a year. here’s something that pretty much sums up our coping mechanism:

okie dokie i pretty much don’t have a say on who gets to be offended and who doesn’t because i’m not black. so if black stays were offended by this, they have the right to be hurt by the situation and they do not deserve all the racism. 

but some of yall are actually fucking disgusting. like i’ve never felt so sick looking at the antics of a fandom before. 

the comments on both his and the sunday kids vlive? they’re literally the most disgusting things i’ve ever seen. you guys are acting like fucking murdered your sister like yes, what he did was wrong. yes, an apology to those who were offended would be great. yes, if you’re black and this offended you, you have all the right to be offended. 

but all of these comments i saw? 

woojin is the leader now  chan deserved the nosebleed its karma  i’m gonna skip hi touch with chan i don’t wanna touch him  people. literally. reselling. their unveil in USA tickets. don’t believe me? they’re not sold out anymore. go have a look yourself–the number of available seats is growing because people are legit selling back their tickets. 

i would sell my fucking soul to be able to see them live. this is actually ridiculous. this has blown so far out of proportion it’s not even funny.  

and you know what? we’re privileged. we assume chan is ACTUALLY our friend, that he’ll listen to every little thing we say, that he can just get on vlive and apologize right there. i made a post earlier saying chan FEELS like a friend because of how close he likes to be with us, and maybe that was his biggest mistake overall. 

because now stays are expecting things from him. don’t bring up the ‘other idols apologized from jyp’ ‘but certain idol–’ ‘but certain idol–’. no. you have no idea whether he’s even allowed to make a statement or apologize. you have no idea whether he even realizes that what he did offended people. do you want a half-assed apology over one that is sincere and he actually realizes what he did? 

people put him on a pedestal. you put him up so high that the fact that he could ever do any wrong is so fucking absurd to you that now that something actually did happen, you have no idea what to do. chan is a human. chan makes mistakes. chan fucked up. okay. established. 

telling jeongin to get tf out of his live so he can apologize? telling him he’s hiding behind jeongin? last week he literally said he would likely have a guest the next week. this was most likely pre planned. jeongin most likely had his playlist set up from earlier. you? have no idea what happens behind the cameras. you don’t. you don’t get a say in this. 

this is an issue, yes. this kind of disgusting fucking toxic hate? should never have fucking happened. this is so far beyond the lines it should have stayed in. youre acting like chan fucking murdered your whole family. 

it’s ridiculous. i literally cannot believe that this is the same fandom who was supporting chris only last sunday. the second he makes a mistake, you turn and just fucking explode. 

i can’t say anything about the apology, because i’m not the one chan needs to apologize to. the fact that a good three quarters of the people who are demanding an apology are either white or another race that isn’t black makes no sense. you’re not the one who deserves the apology. you don’t have the right to say ‘we deserve an apology’. only black people, who’s culture was actually involved in this, have the right to demand an apology. 

people are like: i can’t even look at chan, i can’t even watch the lives, his face disgusts me, what the fuck? that’s going too far. people who are like, i wish i never became a stay: do you think idols don’t do problematic things? idols fuck up all the time. just because you made bang chan this “woke king” who could never do a wrong thing doesn’t mean he isn’t allowed to make a mistake. you’re in the fucking clouds if you actually thought he was too perfect to do such a thing. 

this is a disgusting mess and it’s really times like now when i fucking miss the predebut days when our fandom was small, but we stuck together over everything. we had each other’s backs no matter what. but the fact that we’re so divided over something that doesn’t even directly affect 80% of us is so absurd. 

you can’t look at chan? i can’t stand this fandom. i can’t look at you. blindly defending chan is wrong, being disappointed is one thing. doing this? this is another. more than i’m disappointed in chan, i’m fucking livid at you. sending him death threats and literally saying you’ll skip him at hi touch doesn’t make you any better than him. you’re dropping five levels below where he is.
