Today we celebrate the 10th Birthday of our youngest goat, Winter! She and her brother, Atho, were born to Duchess on the Winter Solstice of 2013. Winter is such a notable part of the herd - always sweet, always a little bit spicy. She is often recognizable by her red bandana.
Show some love for Winter and Atho today!

Hey, Tumblr! We offer this photo of Chester to take the edge off our apology for not giving you sufficient attention. Our social medium during our anniversary this year still is trying to figure out the best uses and approaches to our various social channels. Historically, we haven’t gotten a lot of attention or interaction here compared to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, so we are still mulling things over. We’ll have a firmer plan in place soon!

May the fourth be with you!*
*As we count the order of goats into the herd, it’s Carl and Phil then Chester and Lefty. That makes Lefty our fourth goat.

In this shot of Duchess from the original Goat Field on SE Belmont in 2014, you clearly get a good example of how a goat’s eyes can rotate in their sockets, keeping the pupil parallel to the horizon.
This is so that the goat can lower their head to the ground while browsing or foraging but still maintain their wide field of view which allows them to keep an eye out for potential predators.
It’s one tidbit among many that we learned over the past decade, which in the early days especially happened a lot as we taught ourselves as much as we could about goats.
Share your own stories and moments from these ten years by tagging us directly on any of our social channels or by using #BelmontGoats10th!

It’s time for nominations in Willamette Week’s “Best of Portland” readers’ poll. It’s our 10th anniversary but there’s no Best Herd category. Here’s our pitch to be considered Portland’s Best Mascot.

It’s Bambi and Cooper’s tenth birthday! This is the real kickoff to our tenth anniversary year, and we’re celebrating with our first-ever Reddit AMA, starting in about half an hour.
Join the AMA!
Born on April 25, 2013, these Nigerian dwarf siblings were bottle babies and joined the herd at just four days old (although they were taken home at night for another two weeks). In a real sense, they represent the true tenth anniversary of The Belmont Goats.
To wit: they were the last goats to be purchased, as the last four would come naturally in the final months of the year.
See you at the AMA!

Earlier this month, we teased exciting things for our 10th anniversary this year. Start yourself off by catching up with the story so far…in 2013.
There’s one part of this story that we think most people probably don’t know: there once were two other goats. 👀
While we here mostly are going to be focusing on landmark moments and milestones from that first, full year of 2013, we’d love for you to share your favorite memories of the herd from its entire ten-year existence so far. You can tag us directly or use the BelmontGoats10th tag.

This is years old but really it’s just fair warning that we’ve gotten back into our Giphy account.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when visiting, and no dogs of any breed or size are allowed in the field. Please do not come by if you are sick or symptomatic. Donations are not required to visit, but they are accepted and appreciated!
Parking in front of the field on N Syracuse is for Belmont Goats staff only. We are on a dead-end, residential street, and out of respect to our neighbors we ask that you please park on N Macrum. We are accessible by the 75 and 44 bus lines, and (once construction fencing comes down) by foot or bike on the Peninsula Crossing Trail.
Also, on this last day of National Volunteer Week, we’d like to thank all our volunteers, without whom it would not be possible to keep the herd happy, healthy, and accessible. See the link in our bio if you’d like to become on of them.
