I’ve been thinking today about how people react to signs of gender dysphoria in kids who were afab and like… the hyper-invisibility of trans men and transmascs kind of facilitates people effectively shoving kids back into the closet before they’ve even begun to discover themselves.
Take a child who says things like “I don’t like being a girl,” “I don’t want to be a woman,” or “I wish I was born a boy.” Trans men can tell what’s happening pretty quick. Cis people, however, either have no idea what gender dysphoria in a trans boy looks like or they actively hate trans people so whether they recognize it or not only determines how intensely they respond. So, their first thought ends up being that this is internalized misogyny and the kid just needs to be shown how great women are and how wonderful it is to be a woman. And they never ask any further about how this kid is feeling. Cause surely it’s internalized misogyny. Couldn’t be anything else. Nope.
Now, maybe this does help some cis girls out there thinking “I wish I was born a boy (cause the boys are getting to do things I’m not allowed to do, cause some people are being mean to me because I’m a girl, cause I never hear about girls doing anything great, whatever).” And in that case, good for that kid. I’d rather little girls not hate themselves for being girls.
But when you respond that way to a trans boy saying “I wish I was born a boy (cause my body is changing in ways I hate and the boys’ puberty is giving them changes I want, cause being called she/her feels bad for reasons I can’t explain, etc),” what you end up telling that kid is that he’s not allowed to feel the way he’s feeling. What he’s feeling is something bad that has to be pushed down and never spoken of again. That the only reason he could be feeling this way is cause he hates women and hates himself for being one. So the feeling doesn’t go away. It gets worse. He feels worse. It’s allowed to stay and fester like an infected wound. He’s miserable and has to justify why but can’t. Maybe there’s something wrong with him. Maybe this is how all women feel. It’s hard to know what’s true when you know no one is going to help you.
And I know some conservative fuckwit might read this and call me a child groomer, but fuck them. Childhood shouldn’t have to be painful for any kid. Even if he’s trans. I’m not the monster for saying you should talk to your kid without jumping to conclusions. I’m just a guy who doesn’t want anyone growing up feeling the way I did.

sometimes if there's one fruit platter left and a customer wants it, I hide it in the storage room for myself instead and say it's out of stock☹️

"You're so brave/inspiring to go out in public" isn't less ableist if a (usually invisibly) disabled person is saying it to a visibly disabled person btw. You're still an ass.

it's a little complicated but i think physically disabled people have the right to struggle. to struggle visibly. to try and do something like put on their jacket, or climb up the stairs, or get out of their seat by themselves if they want to. the thing is naturally as a social animal we offer help to other people we see that need it. and that's not wrong. and sometimes disabled people who are struggling actually really need the help. so i'm not saying that it's wrong to offer disabled people help. but i think if that person decides they don't want that help and rejects it, you should respect that. even if it's annoying or scary to you to see someone struggle, as long as we have the capacity to fuck around and find out we should be allowed to as much as any other person
