“내가 너보다 더 사과를 좋아해 - I like apples more than you”
보다 더 - More Than
Hello everyone! Today I’m going to give you a quick comparative lesson! The lesson will go over ‘보다 (더)’ and how to use it!
When comparing two nouns, you can use ‘보다’ - not to be confused with the verb ‘to see’. In this case, it actually means ‘than’ when attached to a noun. 더 in Korean means ‘more’. Here’s what it looks like:
NOUN이/가 NOUN보다 (더) = 중국이 한국보다 더 커요           (China is bigger than Korea)
You can use this when comparing anything: prices, time, size, amount of favor. Here are some verbs to use:
비싸다 - to be expensive 싸다 - to be cheap 크다 - to be big (tall is: 키가 크다) 작다 - to be small (hight) 길다 - to be long 짧다 - to be short (time and length) 빠르다 - to be fast 느리다 - to be slow 덥다 - to be hot 춥다 - to be cold
OTHER: (not comparing) 예쁘다 - to be pretty 맛있다 - to be delicious 멋있다 - to be cool 좋아하다 - to like 어럽다 - to be difficult 중요하다 - to be important 지미있다 - to be fun
Let’s use some in sentences:
♡ 이 가방이 저 가방보다 더 싸요 - this bag is cheaper than that bag ♡ 토끼가 기북이보다 더 빨라요 - rabbits are faster than turtles (or are they) ♡ 한국어가 영어보다 더 어려워요 - Korean is harder than English ♡ 건강이 돈보다 더 중요해요 - health is more important than money ♡ 커피가 차보다 더 좋아해요 - I like coffee more than tea ♡ 차가 주스보다 더 더워요 - tea is hotter than juice
This is one of my favourite grammar lessons if I’m being honest! I really love to say ‘보다 더’ in Korean. One last point! If you want to say ‘significantly’ instead of ‘more’ you can use 훨씬: which is like, ‘much more’. Example:
이 바지가 저 바지보다 훨씬 짧아요! - these pants are MUCH smaller than those
I hope you found this useful! Now you know how to compare in Korean! Happy Learning :)

When you are writing a story and refer to a character by a physical trait, occupation, age, or any other attribute, rather than that character’s name, you are bringing the reader’s attention to that particular attribute. That can be used quite effectively to help your reader to focus on key details with just a few words. However, if the fact that the character is “the blond,” “the magician,” “the older woman,” etc. is not relevant to that moment in the story, this will only distract the reader from the purpose of the scene.
If your only reason for referring to a character this way is to avoid using his or her name or a pronoun too much, don’t do it. You’re fixing a problem that actually isn’t one. Just go ahead and use the name or pronoun again. It’ll be good.

Tumblr media
Hi! So I wanted to do sort of a spanish-learners mini-masterpost because I’ve been learning it for some time and I just wanted to share what I do. I hope this is helpful! :)
BUT BEFORE, an encouraging gif of Romeo Santos!
Tumblr media
i.  Grammar
     ‣ One thing i will say b4 going into this: don’t get too caught up on grammar. Listening to spanish will help you formulate it correctly. A big problem of mine was always thinking about the grammar before speaking, resulting in 7 minutes of cringe-worthy silence. Nobody wants that.
     ‣ Use a textbook! these will help you learn efficiently without overloading yourself. (here are some good ones below, these are the ones I used in school)
» Realidades 1-3 (I couldn’t find the actual textbooks, but here is a workbook)
» Temas - for advanced Spanish learners (AP Textbook)
ii. Vocabulary
     ‣ Most common verbs
     ‣ Spanish by Nemo - a reaalllyyy cool app that allows you to learn vocabulary while doing other things. You can choose to learn between 3 and 100+ words a day and it’ll play them on automatic for you. I like to use this when cleaning my room or going for a run. You can be immersed while doing other things!
     ‣ Keep a vocab journal + write down every new word you hear or any words you’re curious about.
     ‣ Make up ways to remember words
» For example, tiroteo means gunfire, and to me, the two t’s sound like little bullets so that’s how I remember. wtf
iii. speaking
     ‣ Speak to your friends in spanish
» With HelloTalk you can talk to Native Speakers
     ‣ Speak to spanish speaking relatives (if you have them)
» This was particularly hard for me because I always felt embarrassed. But I think getting over that feeling of “I should know this, but I don’t” is an important and worthwhile step.
     ‣ If you hear someone speaking Spanish, for example, in a store, try to converse with them in Spanish
     ‣ Record yourself and listen for your accent
     ‣ Do sample conversations. (These are part of the AP test, and real life. You have 2 minutes and have to respond accordingly. Below are some good practice ones.)
          »  here, here, and here
iv. listening comprehension
This is my fave section.
     ‣ Watch TV!! Watch TV! Watch TV!
» For beginners : Extra in Spanish (not with Mario López) (made especially for learners), Pocoyo, Destinos (made especially learners!)
» Intermediate/Advanced: El internado on Netflix (this is my shiiiittttt), 12 Corazones (also my shiittttttttt, I watched this at like 7 and was hooked. It’s like the bachlorette + game show), Betty La Fea (Ugly Betty)
» It’s completely okay if you don’t understand it in the beginning. That’s natural.
     ‣ LISTEN TO MUSIC.
» I’m Dominican and Black, let me introduce you to the wonderful world of Bachata.
               ♥ Aventura ♥
               More (Xtreme)
          » Regattone
      ‣ Listen to podcasts –> here and here
      ‣ And radio
v. reading
     ‣ Read articles (BE WOKE!) –> El País, BBC Mundo
     ‣ Obras de Teatro
           » Bodas de Sangre
           » Yerma
     ‣ Harry Potter (Bk.1, Bk. 2, Bk. 3, Bk. 4)
     ‣ Short stories
Well, I hope this helps! Please don’t hesitate to message me if you have questions or have something I should add or anything! Happy studying! ¡Suerte!

ESSENTIAL APPS FOR SCHOOL
1. Notability
Notability is like my digital notebook. I take down notes with it and I can also put marks and highlights on them. Highlighting on pdf is also made possible on Notability in which iBooks doesn’t do. When I review lessons, I can put highlights and marks in different colors in which I find more effective in retaining the information. I can also make illustrations.
2. Spotify
Spotify is my favorite music streaming app. Premium subscription is very affordable and what I like about this is that there are various playlist available so I can just choose whatever I feel like listening to. I sometimes just find playlist that is best suited for my mood while studying or I listen to my own playlist. (I will have another detailed post about how I use Spotify for school.)
3. Coffitivity
I know that when things got really serious (when I am cramming) or whenever I am not in the mood to listen to music, I use Coffitivity instead. Coffitivity is an app that generates “enough noise” for me to get things done. I can choose from morning murmur, lunchtime lounge and university undertones noises. I just choose whatever fits my mood. I usually use this when I am studying around 2AM because this hour is so quiet and I find it too noisy if I listen to music so I just use Coffitivity instead. There are also times that I feel like listening to music with some noises, so I can actually play a music while Coffitivity app is on.
4. Quizlet
I use quizlet if I find writing down my practice questions on a paper very time consuming. I believe typing is way faster than writing. My technique with Quizlet is that I type my practice questions using my laptop and sync them on my iPhone or iPad. With Quizlet, I can have my practice questions in flashcard type, game type or simply with the term on the left and its description on the right. I find this very useful because my practice questions are more handy.
5. 30/30
This app is best for time management and it helps you not to waste time. I use this if I study by block which means that I study for 25 minutes and having a 5-minute break afterwards. After my 5-minute break, I study again for 25 minutes but this time my break lasts for 10 minutes. Another way is that I study for 25 minutes following a 5-minute break doing this twice and my third 25-minute study time now has 15-minute break.
————
So these are my essential apps for school in which I believe that they sure help me a lot in school. I hope you guys would find these apps very useful, too! Let me know if there are apps I might also need.

So you’ve learned Hangul. ‘What do I do now?’ is probably your next question. I would know because you all have asked me at least ten times a day. The people have spoken; a lot. So I shall give the people what they want. Here is a short masterlist for beginners who are endlessly stuck at Hangul and have no idea what to do next:
Typing in Korean:     ♡ Hangul (just in case you haven’t gotten that part yet)     ♡ Practice your Hangul: typing test     ♡ How to change your keyboard: language setting       ♡ Korean Fonts
Flashcards / Apps:     ♡ Quizlet     ♡ Anki     ♡ Apps
Websites:     ♡ Talk to Me in Korean (TTMIK)     ♡ How to study Korean (HTSK)     ♡ Lang-8     ♡ KoreanClass101     ♡ Haru-Korean     ♡ Learn Korean     ♡ Sogang Korean
Masterlists:     ♡ Study Korean 101     ♡ Fluentlee     ♡ From Ireland to Korea     ♡ Lost in Korean Translations     ♡ Flicker of Korean     ♡ Korean from Dummies     ♡ Bite Sized Korean     ♡ Bulletproof Korean     ♡ Sohee Studies     ♡ Hannah-DulSet     ♡ Korean Study Tips     ♡ Su-eop     ♡ GGKorean
My Resources / Recommended:     ♡ Textbooks          ~ I will always recommend TTMIK (textbooks here)     ♡ Korean Games     ♡ Websites     ♡ Apps     ♡ Webtoons
Beginner Need to Know:     ♡ Introducing yourself     ♡ Vocabulary (literally fill your brain with as much vocab as possible)     ♡ Batchim (받침)     ♡ Sentence Structure     ♡ Conversational Korean
Tips:     ♡ The romanized Korean is not a complete representation of the Korean alphabet. Understanding that pronunciation/spoken Korean is just as important as reading and writing will help your Korean flourish - so drop romanization.     ♡ You are literally free to do whatever you want. You could learn phrases, vocab, grammar - you could even start taking beginner lessons at a KSL school or find a tutor; your Korean language journey is your own. What works for me might not work for you.     ♡ There’s always a honeymoon stage. What I mean by this is sometimes people are caught up in the excitement of learning Korean that they forget to do the boring stuff - ie grammar and extensive studying. The honeymoon stage usually filters those who are serious and those who aren’t about learning Korean.     ♡ However you chose to learn Korean, own it. If you’d like to learn through KDramas/KPop, that’s okay. If you want to go to Korea and immerse yourself, that’s okay. Own it. And work hard while you’re at it.
Studying Korean is a beautiful and painful process. As a former beginner, I can tell you it’s a lot of work but it’s worth it. I hope that you have some guidance now when you’re done learning Hangul, but it’s really up to you the path you decide to take. Best of luck! I will always be here to answer your questions - don’t hesitate to message. Happy Studying :)
~ SK101
