This is the "Crowley was Mary Magdalene" fic I've been dying to write. I started it as a crackfic to blow off steam after my last WIP nearly killed me, but it's gaining more plot than I thought it would (surprise surprise). I have the majority of it drafted already though, so I expect to be able to post regularly (as long as the last few chapters don't fight me).

As requested, I am here to bother you with a question and a statement.

statement: You're real cool. And so is your fanfiction.

question: I read a post a while ago that Aziraphale and Crowley are actually masters at their own implicit/implied form of communication; like they have this understanding of each other and a very conplicated set of 'communication rules' (and clearly they care about each other a lot). And I kind of had to think about that scene in angel-centric where Aziraphale can't directly ask Crowley to go to Niagara Falls with him bc that's just not how they do things. I was wondering what your thoughts are on that.

So... I guess this depends on what we take good communication to be.

Let's say that good communication is when you are able to express to the other person what you intend to express to them, and vice versa. If this is the case, then I think it is very reasonable to say that (outside the final 15) Crowley and Aziraphale have very good communication.

For instance, notice how quickly they realize that their exactlies are different exactlies. This is a miscommunication, and what this shows is that they are so cued into each other that they immediately recognize what has happened and can work to correct it easily.

Another significant miscommunication may have happened when Crowley asked for the holy water. However, I don't really read the scene that way. I don't think they miscommunicated with the word "fraternizing." I think, instead, they both knew exactly what it meant when Aziraphale used that word, which is why Crowley took such offense to it.

There's also the fact that it seems reasonable to read Aziraphale as thinking that Crowley is asking for a poisoned pill, when in fact he was asking for a weapon. Maybe that's a miscommunication, but, if so, it's a miscommunication born from the central tension between them: it is their differing positions regarding loyalty to each other vs their sides that would lead to Aziraphale interpreting the request in a different way from how Crowley meant it.

But, honestly, I think it's also possible to read that scene as them both communicating successfully what they mean to, to each other. Does it seem that strange to think they are communicating their different positions vis a vis commitment and intimacy extremely well? Is there any doubt that Aziraphale rejects the request out of concern for Crowley, and Crowley makes the request for reasons that Aziraphale would refuse to consider?

Another miscommunication: when Crowley first suggests killing Warlock, Aziraphale doesn't catch on. But this is another case where the confusion is quickly resolved. And I don't think you need to have especially poor communication in order to not immediately realize your occult soul mate is suggesting you murder an 11 year old.

What other cases of miscommunication are there?

Maybe, alternatively, good communication is feeling safe and capable of expressing the widest variety of different things to another, and vice versa. If that's the case, then their capacity for communication is a matter for huge debate. Do they recognize the bids for connection that each other makes, constantly? Is Crowley's speech in the final 15 something new being communicated, or something they have communicated countless times before but just not with direct words? Do they know what they both mean, when they say our side?

Argh.

Maybe good communication is the ability to express to the other what matters, and vice versa. If this is the case, then they have terrible communication. Over and over again, we see them failing to express information that the other really would have been better off knowing. But is this really a reasonable account of what it means to have good communication? I really don't think so. It seems to me to be a different sort of relationship issue.

Or, maybe good communication is the capacity to express successfully to another what you mean to express in the easiest, most straightforward way. If this is correct, then they are truly horrible communicators. You don't come up with an apology dance, if you've got an ability to communicate about emotions directly. They don't do straightforward communication, which is part of the reason why the final 15 is so unsettling.

So... I don't know. All I feel safe saying is: if brevity is a requirement for good communication, then I have hereby proven myself to be a terrible communicator.

I wasn’t going to read Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach because I don’t like the effect that long fics have on my life. And everyone is so effusive about it that I knew this one would take over, divert my attention, and generally get my brain in a choke-hold.

But I was weak and thought “Just read the first few paragraphs, maybe I won’t even like it.”

Reader, I liked it. Now I’m about to start Chapter 4 and this fucking story can do what it likes with me, with my life and my productivity. It is so. Fucking. Good.

I’m not even halfway through but, dear lord!

I haven't shared any fic recs before but I was so excited to see a new chapter drop after an intermission for the fic that has driven me crazy for weeks now. So here are a few that are just...my favourites right now.

All Good Omens, mostly current multi-chapters with new chapters on their way. (I love that anticipation.)

The one that made me make this post. Give me Death in a Big Cup by @indigovigilance. A human AU (eyebrows wiggle) that is absolutely gutwrenching and gorgeous. It's definitely on the serious side. A lot of angst. A lot of brilliant academic tidbits so you will learn while enjoying a beautiful story. Very mature themes, but very graceful restraint. So far not spicy, this is plot plot plot! (no idea if it will stay spiceless though?) M rating.

Lord, just, help me. In Knowing, In Silence by LollipopCop / @obsessivelollipoplalala. One of plenty of fics out there processing feelings about Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship through the ages...built around their relationship in the days before the fall. It's romantic, angsty, plot driven. I actually cried. It has been slow goings with updates. Five chapters over more than six months at this point. But good things can often take time. E rating.

I love absolutely every word written by indigoangels on A03. Flaws is a Post-S2 / S3 Speculative and it is epic. The author was born to write. Angst, heartbreak, horror, very serious, dark. Tender moments, so much tension, another plot plot plot! Seriously, read all of their fics while you're at it. I mean very dark and serious though. I do love the tag "I'm guessing there will be sex and violence in this - there usually is in my stuff!" Exactly. E rating.

The Season of Nightingales by @nosferatini. Whoosh. Post S2/S3 speculative fix-it of sorts. Excellent, fun and clever plot about attempting to thwart Armageddon The Sequel with some unexpected allies. This is sweet and fluffy and not spicy but very romantic. T rating.

And the very very spiciest!

This has a lot of hits, but it deserves them. Tether by Ginger_Cat / @gingiekittycat. It's very spicy in a little bit of a silly way. I was expecting silly and spicy. And it is. But it really shocked me with a brilliant plot that gets quite serious at times. It checks all of the boxes. Absolutely E rating.

Aziraphale's First Orgasm by @thebiggestnope. Ineffables finally open up and love each other out loud. So much romance and hurt and angst and trauma and love and ... human corporations. It's not JUST spice. There are a lot of feelings. I mean, really. It's a beautiful examination of interpersonal communication and working through anxiety and past trauma etc. E rating, of course.
