I’m sorry, but fuck anyone who even remotely supports this post.

OTR is quite literally near the heart of Cincinnati. It is not outskirts- let alone neglected. It was a predominately black neighborhood that constantly faced drug addiction and poverty. Now it is nearly gentrified with a bunch of spoiled, privileged white people and their own greed. All that remains is mediocre breweries and shitty overpriced restaurants on every corner. The only neglect that is here- is the city’s failed attempts to capitalize on tourism and make things “hip” or “eccentric”. “Millions dollars on a street car? No problem!” “Forcing people out of their homes and flipping buildings into restaurants? Sure!” “Opening up facilities that can give food to the poor or assisting fellow citizens facing poverty? Nope, sorry. We gotta open up a hot chocolate shop.”

I have lived in Cincinnati all of my life and it only takes a little bit of research to know any of this. Odds are, the person who wrote this post has no clue what they are talking about and the artist probably fed them all of this.

Fuck this guy’s music and fuck Tumblr’s garbage music spotlight bullshit.

Music Spotlight: OTR

Ryan, the 26-year old aerospace engineer-turned-producer, found himself living in the small town of in Kurashiki with no friends and a major language barrier. He decided to buy a keyboard and began making music in his free time. When he returned to the States, he moved into a neighborhood on the outskirts of Cincinnati known as “Over-the-Rhine” or OTR. The once-neglected area had undergone a renaissance that mirrored his own journey of music discovery, so it became the ideal name for his project. Check out what he had to say. 

Tell us about the shift from aerospace engineer to producer. How did it come about and what led you to make music?

I never had a direct plan to take it this far. It was sort of incremental as time went on and as more people started to take me seriously - I just went along with it. I started to teach myself piano freshman year of college to release stress from engineering school but it wasn’t until my internship in Japan when I really started to understand music production. There, I bought a midi keyboard and produced everyday since I had nothing else to do besides work and travel the country. Writing music there helped me deal with the isolation of being alone in a foreign place. I held onto the habit of working a day job then writing music at night when I returned to the states. It just turned into something I was obsessing over because of the way I think I learned how to write music. Being completely self taught, I felt like I was writing stuff that was genuinely me and there was no way I could stop doing it. Even if nobody listened, I would still be doing this because it helps me.

Favorite place you’ve traveled and why?

I love so many places for several different reasons but I think I loved Seattle the most. It felt like home right when I got there and that hasn’t happened for me at other places. Plus there’s so much to do in the surrounding area. I went hiking in the mountains last May which is stuff that really helps me with writing - by holding onto those memories for later.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“You have to work hard everyday - you can’t rely on talent alone.”

Is there a moment that you consider the highlight of your career up to now?

If I’m honest with myself, I’d say signing at the Capitol Music HQ building was the highlight of my career since it made me feel like I was a legitimate artist. I struggled and continue to struggle with imposter syndrome, probably because I was an engineer first and artist second for so long. Having that memory makes me feel like maybe I can do this whole art thing even when I feel like a big nerd 99% of the time haha.

What inspires your sound?

I realized that I don’t really process stuff that’s happening to me in the moment and it takes some time for me to fully digest it all. When I’m alone in the studio that’s when things come out and where I get to take a snapshot of those memories and freeze them in time with my music. I get all shaky when it comes to life in the moment and that’s when I know I wrote something down that matters to me. Finding sounds that mimic the emotions I had during those memories is what inspires me the most when I’m in the studio.

Kairi as Sora’s Home

I am excited to potentially play through Sora rescuing Kairi... but I also know I’m going to cry like a baby, because how am I supposed to handle seeing Sora progress through his journey, knowing each step forward is a step closer to his doom? And watch him face it so bravely and with a heart full of determination if his conversation with Naminé is any indication?

But as he said at the beginning of KH3...

Every step forward is always a step closer to home. Kairi. Kairi’s his home. She greeted him in KH2 and KH3 with, “You’re home” in the Japanese versions.

And in the KH3 example, they weren’t even on Destiny Islands. Which shows that so long as Sora is with Kairi, he’s home. The physical location doesn’t matter, it’s who he’s with. And the person that represents home to him? It’s Kairi.

His journey to find Kairi was foreshadowed right from the opening lines of KH3.

I’m really excited to see how his journey might unfold, even if it breaks my heart and makes me cry. It’ll be worth it, and I can’t wait to see what Nomura has planned.

Nah, it’s still a garbage fanfiction that is so egregiously arrogant that it misuses the term theory. Even though the Sleeping Realms as a concept doesn’t exist- even the smaller niche theories don’t exactly hold much of a candle or relevance the greater theory at hand.

The Destiny Trio and the Paopu Fruit. (Kingdom Hearts 1)

Hey everyone. This is gonna be my first rambling on Tumblr. So please, I am a little rusty with interacting/writing out my thoughts to others. Before I get into any of this, please keep an open-mind. I am not dissing any ships. I am not saying my analysis or my thoughts are better than yours. All I want to do first and foremost, is level with you on how I interpret the series. I wanna talk about the Destiny Trio and the Paopu Fruit. Mostly focusing on Riku’s attitude towards Sora and Kairi’s budding romance. This might a little ship heavy- but I am also speaking through context that is given to me. In the very beginning of Kingdom Hearts (2002), we are given a light explanation of what a Paopu Fruit is. A Paopu fruit (パオプの実 Paopu No Mi)  is a star fruit exclusive to the world of Destiny Islands. This fruit is said to bind two people eternally- making their destinies intertwined. Destiny is a very prominent theme in almost every Kingdom Hearts game. Whether it is defying it- or ultimately following it, it is shown as a very powerful force. The first introduction of this fruit- oddly enough- is through Riku of all people. Which I find rather fascinating- because he is the odd one out of his trio to not experience a shared item. Wayfinder has their lucky charms, Sea-Salt... well... has their ice cream, but Destiny has only the Paopu Fruit between two of its characters. This is incredibly significant- and only intensifies over the course of the series. Sora and Kairi have a unique relationship- that separates them from the rest of the entire cast. We see the Destiny Trio bond over some heavy words, on our first sunset with them. Sora questions Kairi’s origin and the safety of their trip. Kairi even asks what Riku could possibly do in another world. Riku stresses that it isn’t the point of what they do- but rather they need to just go out and experience it. Riku then thanks his friend for giving him the inspiration to begin with.  As the trio are preparing to leave- Kairi advances towards the beach, leaving Sora and Riku alone. Riku immediately tosses a Paopu Fruit towards Sora. This is when we get some light exposition on the myth of the Paopu Fruit’s power:

So to reiterate above, this Paopu Fruit intertwines two people’s destinies. In this case, with other characters such as Selphie, regard it as romantic. Intertwining fates? Even out loud it comes off very intimate- even having exclusivity of only two people. It’s quite fascinating and gives a lot of meaning to the fruit knowing that.  What does Riku think of the fruit? Well he kinda just brushes it off. However, the line he gives following, is rather peculiar: 

Of course, you could interpret this scene to Riku just teasing Sora about the idea in itself. They are younger adults, only 14 and 15. It is the age of young adolescence- romance and growing up are teased and thought about. But, it is what follows this night- is the most interesting connection I drew. 

On the second day of being on the islands; one of the items you collect is in The Secret Place. When picking up the mushroom, it triggers a cutscene. All of the bubbly, fun atmosphere made by “Destiny Islands” track comes suddenly to a halt. Sora seeing his cave drawing, reminiscences of his younger years.

What does Riku have to do with this? Well, I believe that Riku is aware of this cave drawing. The trio has been together for nearly years- and The Secret Place is spot acknowledged by other characters. As much as I want to brush off this light teasing, I can’t help but to stress the potential significance of it. Why wait till Kairi walks further away? Why take the effort to pluck a Paopu fruit, wait, and then tease your friend about it? Scene direction implies that there is more to it than just “teasing a friend”. The scene shifts rather intimately and the tone softens. Sora alone with both the audience and to himself, caresses Kairi’s half of the drawing.

Oh.

With a warm smile and softening eyes- “Treasured Memories” plays. The track sets the tone of the scene, showing Sora has feelings for Kairi. These feelings have spanned for years potentially- and Sora is expressing them. For just getting teased about it just the other night, Sora sits down, and draws himself sharing one with Kairi:

(Did your heart just skip a beat?)  Later on that same day, Sora and Riku race with the winner naming the ship. Before the race starts, Sora suggests making himself captain along with naming the ship, which Riku replies:

Aight. Kinda random but, with how the line is delivered it comes off serious. Maybe even passive aggressive.

It is odd that this plays out- in context to the one mentioned before. Riku purposely raises the stakes of the race to rile up Sora. Riku himself wants the exclusivity of sharing a Paopu Fruit with another. So much- that he would take it away from Sora if it truly meant it. Riku subtly harbors similar feelings to Kairi, as Sora does for her. The two share a sibling rivalry that is popular in shonen series- of course a love interest could be a point of competition. I am not painting Riku to be a bad friend- but let’s not forget that some people, like myself, have acted toxic once or twice in our younger years. In fact, most of Riku’s character arc in the first game- was making mistake after mistake. The resolution of it comes from facing humility and being brave. Next time, I will be talking about Days. Heya, Blue! This question doesn’t really apply to SRT but I honestly just want to ask you about your preferences with KH! Do you enjoy KH ships? Or are you more so disinterested in romance in KH? I’m a fan of SoKai with some light “oh that would be cute” ships behind it.

However if you want to keep ships out of your analysis/passion project, I completely understand. You don’t need to answer my previous question. I know in regards to the theory itself- people have called out ship bias- last thing I want is a reverse scenario to happen.

Oh, don’t even worry about it! It’s not much of a secret that I don’t passionately ship anything… in any fandom, really. There’s definitely ships I find cute, though! It’s really more like a separation between “ships that have a dynamic I like,” “ships that have a dynamic I can see working,” and then very rarely “ship that I dislike because I can’t possibly see a way that it could be a healthy relationship”

For KH ships, I do like SoKai and think they’re really sweet together. I can see SoRiku, but I feel like there’s just enough of a power imbalance and Riku unintentionally putting Sora down that I only really like it with their Data counterparts, who don’t have the brunt of those issues. TerrAqua has a special place in my heart as my first hardcore KH ship before I stopped caring about shipping, RikuNami is growing on me and is pretty equal with RikuXi to me… I lowkey ship Ven/Strelitzia (unless Ven’s revealed as the killer.) GulAva is precious. AkuSai (assuming Isa apologizes) and younger XehaQus before they fell apart are both ships that I can see working and like seeing around

And of course I’m in Ephelayer hell and can’t get out. Thought I’d say that that’s the only KH ship that I currently have a very strong opinion about. Of course it would be the rarepair that almost never gets content, right? Ahahahahaha the second thing in the tag is something I made months ago please help us

That’s really all I can think of off the top of my head, though! And I do have to stress that all of these are really low-key except for Ephelayer. And these are just ships that I look at and go “aw, cute.” I’m pretty neutral to everything else. Can’t think of one I really hate off the top of my head
