Have a read through Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, extremely great book talking about the medium of comics, it's long but my god is it good. I think chapter 4 is particularly useful for ppl w/o a lot of comic experience.

Remember that comics are not storyboards for tv/film, they do things way cooler than that (see tip #2) 😎

Read lots of comics!! i consumed manga in my teens at an unholy pace + learnt a lot unconsciously while doing so. (I read a lot less now unfortunately and maybe manage a graphic novel every 6 months)

No one is saying that you MUST have sex with trans people.

When activists say things like “It’s transphobic to say that you aren’t attracted to trans women,” that doesn’t translate to “You absolutely have to find a trans woman right now and bone down!” Instead, what they’re saying is “The only thing that all trans women have in common is that they’re trans women. They all look different, act different, think different, have different bodies and are at different stages of transition. There is no way that you find every single one of them unattractive. To specifically single them out as a group that you dislike is based on stereotypes and bias, not reality.”

It benefits all of us to take the time to examine our internal bias. Recognizing that prejudice and reflecting on it is a good thing. Maybe your sexual or romantic leanings will never change. That’s okay. But let’s not just brush past these things by saying “It’s a preference” when really: these thoughts are based on a culture of discrimination, stereotypes and bigotry. Labeling them as such is a reflection on that culture, not on your love life.

when i first heard about the male loneliness epidemic i was like oh yeah close camaraderie and bonding between men is often discouraged in favor of competition or, if not discouraged, at least filtered through a lens of individualism that precludes deep connections. and then i learned what people meant by it (men arent getting laid) to which i say skill issue

I think part of my disconnect is that I don’t see “having a tv adaptation” as an inherent good. It is not, in an of itself, something valuable to me. “They had to cast Skarsgård/it had to downplay Preservation’s principled anticapitalist stance/it had to make the characters more cartoonish, or else there wouldn’t be a TV show at all” so? I don’t care if there’s no TV show at all. Having a TV show adaptation isn’t some prize awarded to the best books, it doesn’t make the book—or the world—better. A book is not just a rough draft for the eventual true, real, respectable pinnacle of media, the live action movie/TV show. If a book never gets a TV show adaptation that does not make my life any worse. A book having a TV show does not inherently make my life better.

So I just look at it and go, a TV show ought to do more than simply exist, it ought to be good, and if it’s not going to be good, there’s no point in it existing. The mere existence of a TV show is not a strong enough justification to me to make a TV show exist. And every disappointment being justified by, well, they had to do that in order to make the TV show, makes me go, then why bother to make the TV show.

sorry if i'm gonna be quiet for a while. my country recently introduced laws that make it so that in order to use social media to the fullest (not being able to view ns/fw content and in a few cases, not even having access to dms), i HAVE to give the sites my id/face scan.

it goes into effect july 25th. it'll probably effect here too, since this place allows mature content (tho not full on ns/fw)

i'm very distressed about it bc i might end up not even being able to talk to my internet friends. i don't really have any irl ones

if i have to disappear on most socials by then, you know why.
