Hi chat, sorry to talk about ships on here; I know we’ve all been put through the wringer with them, however, may I just say one thing: Steve and Dally are both 17.

Look, I love Stevepop and Tally as much as the next guy, but multishippers I know you’re out there. I know we have Dally and Soda x Two-Bit and all that jazz, so what’s stopping Steve x Dally (ok theres actually a lot stopping them, but this is fandom, go be a free bird).

Steve teaches Dally about cars or tricks on models to screw them up. Maybe Dally and Steve go drag racing. Dally could let Steve crash in his room at Buck’s when his dad kicks him out. They sit on the swings and share a smoke; they’re not official boyfriends, could never be in this time, but their relationship was much more than friends. They didn’t need to label it, but it was still very much there, and neither had tried to toss it away or ruin it yet. Maybe they kiss, maybe they don’t.

Does anyone see what I’m seeing.

steve and evie being best friends and each others “biggest supporters ever is so canon to me. steve’ll set up evie and sylvia on a diner date and he will bring sodapop to make sure everything goes according to plan by “monitoring” them (even if he has to shush soda cause he’s giggling every five seconds cause he does NOT like the look sylvia is giving either of them-) and evie giving steve pep talks when hes too nervous to ask soda out/is feeling too prideful and needs to be brought down a peg.

Steve who leaves extra cash in Darry and Soda’s wallet in secret even if he needs that money for college. Steve who, other than pony, is the one who’s gonna get out. Steve who doesn’t end up going to college. Steve who ends up going to Vietnam. Steve who didn’t get drafted but went by choice because if he spent another minute in his fathers house he was gonna -. Steve who never come back to Tulsa.

Soda who noticed when Steve helped out in secret. Soda who knew that he’d never make it to college. Soda who was ready to support Steve and pony until they got out. Soda who ended up not being able to support them. Soda who ends up being drafted for ‘nam. Soda who didn’t have a choice but Steve was going anyway and it was gonna be hell but at least they had -. Soda who came back a shell of a person.

steve who ends up going off the rails, having everything planned ahead of him only to have it crash and burn in a flash, and soda trying to desperately hold on to what he's got left of just about everything only to lose it all.

he just wanted out. steve was so desperate; no one in the gang but soda saw how much he was hurting because he kept it in and zipped his mouth shut because talking about feelings is sissy. and he ain't sissy.

soda did the best he could, being there for him under any circumstances and whenever he needed, he knew steve was being nicer for a reason. he knew he had plans to do something stupid, start talking like johnny used to.

and just like johnny, his final moments are full of regret. he didn't really want to die. he just wanted out. he wanted away from that death trap of a "home", he wanted his anger to stop chasing his emotions no matter how happy he was in a moment, he wanted to be in love with soda peacefully without the burden of a good beating to death looming over their heads because they're fucking fa—

soda got the call for steve over the walkie and dropped just about everything. they told him it'd be dangerous, running back into a field like that. he didn't care. he had to save him. he had to get steve out of there. he had to help him pull through.

steve's last breaths were taken as soda lifted him from the ground, blood pooling out of—fuck, he didn't even know. there was so damn much of it. soda sobbed hard, racing back out of the fields and just barely missing a shot to the head, taking it in the shoulder and collapsing on the floor, on top of steve.

he sobbed, and sobbed, and steve just smiled at him before he rolled over dead underneath him. soda clutched steve's blood-stained uniform tight in his hands, not wanting to let go.

he didn't get to pull through with him. and now soda'd have to do it all on his own. they had each other. but it was never meant to last in the world that they got stuck in.

thinking about the gang and silence

how silence is peaceful for darry because noise exhausts him. how silence is just boring for two-bit. how silence is torture for soda because he needs to be doing something. how silence is worrying for steve because where's soda, and if he's here, why isn't he talking? how silence is dangerous for johnny because everything is dangerous and silence just means it's hiding. how silence is johnny for dally because he's never found anyone else whose silence is comforting and not threatening. how silence is comfort for ponyboy because it meaning being free to think without distractions.

soda will fall asleep or lay down with his eyes closed on steve's lap sometimes and steve traces meaningless lines on his forehead while whispering to him in spanish. sometimes he just tells him about his day, sometimes he'll tell him those feelings you just can't express in any way other than your native language, sometimes he'll even sing under his breath

mrs curtis taught all her sons how to dance a bit when they were kids, enough so they wouldn't be an embarrassment at their weddings.

one day it comes up that steve doesn't know how to dance and soda offers to teach him. y'know. to practice. for girls. (every straight story starts this way trust I'm super straight) (don't fact check that)

and at one point soda turns steve around and just sort of. hugs him. and steve is actuely aware of every spot on his body and they actually don't say anything to each other for like another three months

steve and soda pretended to be together/married for like several months before they got together, making jokes about it and calling each other pet names "ironically" and genuinely no one noticed when they got together

Soda scowls as he sits down to Dally. The guys next to them are clearly shitting on someone, but there’s no need to be so fucking loud about it. It's annoying, not to mention stupid. You never know who could pop up at Buck’s.

"I dunno why Jones even lets him work there." Soda cocks an eyebrow and meets eyes with Dally.

Jones? The DX manager?

"Shit at fixing cars, too."

"Nah, man, worst part 'bout Randle is he acts like he’s fucking Elvis, y'know? Like he’s the best thing since sliced bread."

"Yeah, he would fuck Elvis, wouldn't he?" The two guys to Soda's left laugh.

"Fucking queer."

Any hint of laughter at having caught someone shit-talking their friend leaves Dally's eyes. His eyebrows furrow almost imperceptibly and Soda presses his lips together tightly, like how Darry jams his fists in his pockets to stop himself from hitting someone.

Dally jerks his head at the door and they walk out, leaning against the wall right next to the doorway. They both smoke, as if that's the only reason they stepped outside, and pretend like they aren't double-checking the switches in their back pockets.

After half an hour, the obnoxious voices grow closer to the door. Dally catches Soda's eye from across the doorway and they turn to face the door. He grins.

"The fuck happened to you?" Steve asks as Soda clambers into his car the next day.

"Brawl with Dally got outa hand."

Steve cocks an eyebrow. "How'd that start?"

"Said I didn't have the balls to take him."

Steve snorts. "Clearly you don't."

"Hey!"

do you think steve beat himself up over the fact that dally asked for darry? that despite considering dally the closest person to him after soda, dally asked for darry when he was at his weakest

why darry? why did he trust him more? (maybe it’s just because he saw you in pain after the rumble, he tells himself, maybe it’s because darry was the head of the family and he asked to hide out at the curtises')

steve sometimes wakes up feeling like shit and can't do anything all day so soda covers for him wherever it is he needs to be and when he comes back home he lays down next to steve and puts on his favourite album and talks to him about his day and steve closes his eyes and they hold hands in silence even though soda can't stand silence in any other situation

Steve who's never happy with how he looks. He changes his shirt three times every morning. He combs his hair and then ruffles it to start over again. He paints his nails but can only see the small bits of skin he got on accident. He puts on eyeliner and decides it looks too girly and regrets taking it off half-way through.

And every morning when he sees him first Soda smiles and tells him he looks good but it's not enough because he always says that, he can't really mean it, that shirt probably looks stupid and it all looks like shit and why does anyone have to see him?
