Gear isn't just a mask and tail. Gear can be anything from a cute sweater that matches the type of creature you are or even a bracelet / charm. You're only limited by yourself and what you think of as gear, and it can be as subtle or obvious as you want.

Only you know what truly is or isn't safe for your situation, but just because ears and a tail aren't safe doesn't mean you need to give it up entirely.

I would love to have a tail and all the inconveniences that would come with it

I would brush it every day, find ways of sitting that don't squish it, be careful of closing doors behind me, hold it close to me in crowded spaces, etc, I wouldn't care if it was "inconvenient", I would love it
