For all you language-lovers
This has been a long time coming. I had the idea years ago and never got around to the next step (mostly because I would tell myself ‘this Sunday’ and then Monday would come and I would realize that now it would have to be next Sunday). So this is my long winded way of saying: Welcome!
I’m an anthropology and linguistics student (no degree yet but I’m about a year out) and I love (lovelovelove) language and always have. So this is my contribution to language and language-in-culture.
What to expect: -A set of words each week with an over all them (e.g. parts of speech, words about words, paradigms, contranyms, borrowed words, etc.), the breakdown of the word (i.e. pronunciation, definition/s, examples, and etymology), maybe something about how the word fits the category I’ve shoved it and an invitation for comments. -Every Sunday I’ll post the topic and list of words under the topic and Monday-Friday I will cover the words. Saturdays may or may not be dedicated to non-English words. -I may, down the road, add in other things--idioms, famous quotes, perhaps even the history behind words (like the English pronoun ‘she’ which was ‘heo’ in Old English)--or layer in other languages (I’m learning German, have a native Russian-speaking best friend and regular contact with a variety of other languages)
And of course, audience participation is encouraged--if you have questions or request, then don’t be shy!
(A bit of shameless self-promotion: I am a fiction writer in my spare time and while I refuse to post original works, I dabble in fandoms and can be found at applewrites. I’m gonna attempt to post daily drabbles for my daily words, so we’ll see how that goes.)
