The corners of her lips turned up. Just being in his presence calmed her, but day after day, and restaurant after restaurant, her desire to be closer was intensifying. She tilted her head. “You know what I’ve been thinking of?”  He gave her a look that said he knew exactly what he was referring to as he took a sip from his straw. “What’s that?”  Resting her elbows on the table, she leaned in. “Two nights ago.”  “Two nights ago?” He rubbed his jaw. “The pasta bar?”  “I was thinking of after we left, when you raced past your plan to take things slow.”  She still wasn’t sure how it happened, but she’d ended up straddling his lap in the front seat of his car with her fingers tangled in his hair. If it had been up to her, she’d have gone on kissing him all night.  But no one could dutifully stick to a plan better than him.  “I didn’t race past,” he asserted. “I stopped just in time. No thanks to you.”  Dany sat up taller, as close as she could get to him from her seat. “What would you do if I kissed you right now?”  “Do it,” he dared her, bending across the table to meet her. “We’ll find out.”  “No,” she teased, sitting back and taking a sip of her drink. “I’m respecting your boundaries.”  “Suit yourself,” he said, glancing away, trying to look unbothered. “About that magical plane ride, I can hardly wait.”  Her pulse raced at the mention of their fast approaching trip. “I can’t either – though I will admit I’m nervous.”  Jon took her hand and brushed his thumb across her knuckles. “We have difficult things to discuss, but we’ve both been through much worse.”  “That’s true.” They’d both lived through impossible situations. “Are you sure it’s a good idea? For me to meet your family right now?”  “A good idea?” Jon blew out a breath. “I don’t know if it’s a good idea for anyone to meet my siblings. We’ll have to get it over with sometime – I’ll warn you, if they start cracking jokes about you having disappeared – that just means they like you.”  Dany’s heart sank to her stomach. “And your mom? I can’t imagine what she thinks.” Of the woman who put her son through so much.  “You don’t have to worry about her – she’ll be the least of your worries.”  “Is that a good thing?”  He touched her cheek. “Do you trust me?”  “I do.”  “I’d never knowingly bring you into a bad situation.”  “I know.” Dany looked down at their joined hands. “It’s just that everything is so complicated now.”  “That’s the point of the visit isn’t it? To uncomplicate things.”

romance as a subplot is SOOOOO GOODDDDD because 98% of the time it's an intense slowburn that develops over several chapters. the story focuses on the plot or character development more but somehow it makes the romance SO MUCH BETTER!!! idk how to explain it it's just so good...like when an author's focus is more on characters and plot it gives you as the reader a deeper connection to the characters which makes the romantic/platonic aspect so much better
