Affordable Dark Academia Fashion
With fall settling in, many of us in the dark academia community (including myself) feel the desire to revamp our wardrobes with new pieces that embody the aesthetic.  However, since the pieces that make up this particular fashion typically fall on the higher end of the fashion spectrum, it can often be cost prohibitive to those who want to get involved in the community but don’t have a lot of money to spare.  Dark academia fashion can be more on the expensive side due to its staple fabrics, such as tweed and linen.  Most of the fashion revolves around vintage (or at least vintage-inspired) clothing, which can also run up a pretty high price tag.
A lot of warranted criticism has been levied against the dark academia aesthetic due to its apparent lack of accessibility, largely based on class and racial lines.  Racial prejudices as they relate to dark academia fashion in general is a topic for a different post altogether, but I do hope to address at least a part of some of the inherent classism embedded in the community.
There is absolutely no shame in buying fashion (dark academia or not) secondhand!  There is a whole wonderful community and well of resources out there for those looking for clothing that encompasses their desired aesthetic while also staying budget friendly. The practice of thrifting, online or in-person, also helps to reduce the negative impacts of the fast fashion industry, another important topic worthy of its own post.  For now though, I’ll just suggest some of my favorite places to buy dark academia fashion secondhand.  These aren’t particularly new suggestions, but I think they’re worth restating regardless.
First, I’d suggest Depop, which has an extensive catalog of dark academia offerings available via a simple search.  I’ve also had some luck with Poshmark, which has a great search filtration system that comes in handy when looking for specific pieces.  Lastly I would suggest seeking out your local thrift or consignment store, though I’d exercise caution while the pandemic is still going on
Alright, there’s my dark academia fashion hot take.  Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions of places I didn’t mention!

How mutable are our feelings, and how strange is that clinging love we have of life even in the excess of misery!
