An important idea was to introduce laughter in the pleasant sense of the word. Not the coarse or ridiculing laugh, but humour of a certain quality, and yet hard to express. I felt as if everything that had gone before, with the exception of Rabelais and Jarry –tradition– had been created by serious people who consider life a serious business and that it was necessary to produce serious things so that serious posterity would understand everything that these people, serious for their epoch, had done. I wanted to get rid of that.
