There is no such thing as photography. It is a series of technological processes. It is always changing, always young.

There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality. There is no danger then, anyway, because the idea of the object will have left an indelible mark. It is what started the artist off, excited his ideas, and stirred up his emotions. Ideas and emotions will in the end be prisoners in his work.

...If you get to experience being in the midst of the moment of creation, of exceeding what you thought was possible for yourself, you’ve already won. That is what we should be in the game for. That’s what’s really at stake in the life of an artist...

An important idea was to introduce laughter in the pleasant sense of the word. Not the coarse or ridiculing laugh, but humour of a certain quality, and yet hard to express. I felt as if everything that had gone before, with the exception of Rabelais and Jarry –tradition– had been created by serious people who consider life a serious business and that it was necessary to produce serious things so that serious posterity would understand everything that these people, serious for their epoch, had done. I wanted to get rid of that.
