its funny how his death kinda lined up with this. i think his resolution actually made me appreciate him way more as a character.
kanou being passive about the world ending despite all the pain hes caused people to get to this point. kurona scolding him for his nonchalance after all hes put her and her sister through and then claiming he needs to pay through death because naturally she wants to punish him for what hes done just as the fandom wanted him to be punished yet he denies her even that satisfaction with a smile on his face.
“im not interested in atonement because i have no regrets. im jealous. im not kind enough to hate, kurona. im sorry”
hes not kind (doesnt have the capacity to care for others) enough to hate (to hold a grudge on behalf of someone else like kuro being mad for her sister) just as he isnt kind enough to care about who he hurts to reach his goal, isnt kind enough to grant kurona the satisfaction of getting her revenge and the relief that may have come with it. despite being what kurona wanted to do herself, kanous last act was just as cruel as all his others because he robbed her of the one thing left that she wanted.
one of the cruelest characters in the universe wasnt even a ghoul and wanted to further medical knowledge and capabilities to save more people in the future. it goes to show just how many horrible acts one can do for a good cause. his cruelty is important and so is his easy ending because it really hammers in the fact that bad people dont always get punished like they deserve to, good people dont always get happy endings, victims dont always get justice, the world isnt fair. it was not satisfying at all and thats what makes me like it
i havent yet finished tokyo ghoul but ive seen some old posts talking about how they want kanous death to be super agonizing and i honestly think i might prefer it if kanou didnt suffer some slow, agonizing death and instead died very quickly. no amount of pain that he receives would heal the wounds of those he hurt. no amount of punishment would make up for it or relieve the burden that his victims carry and i think a quick death would ensure that were not gonna pretend it would.
the whole “punish characters who have done wrong with horrible deaths” is a concept i totally understand because i get how it may satisfy people but personally it feels kinda meaningless to me. a big aspect of the characters wrongdoings is that the people theyve hurt didnt deserve it but if they themselves were to be punished, it would absolutely be deserved so it takes away the satisfaction for me. all in all, im really interested in seeing how his character is resolved

ykw houji and akira were right cause wtf is this
Tumblr media
hes condemned himself to being alone and miserable for the rest of his life and on top of that, cannibalism is known to ruin a ghouls mental state so its possible he regresses back to how he started out in re. wouldve preferred houji killing him to this tbh. at least then the suffering ends and at the hands of someone who cares about him
