The other day I did some kinda analysis on ‘Sculptures of Anything Goes’ by Arctic Monkeys and was told to post it here

With the past 2 Arctic Monkeys album releases, there has been a drastic change in their sound from 2013’s AM which has caused many people to take dislike to the albums. In 2022, The Car; their 7th studio album was released and recieved a negative response from fans, The 3rd track in the album “Sculptures of Anything Goes” includes countless messages about their change in sound and this is what I think they are saying.

The song starts with the opening line “How am I supposed to manage my infallible beliefs? While i’m sockin’ it to ya” which I believe is Alex saying “How am I supposed to make the music I want to, while i’m constantly trying to keep up to your (fans) standards.

The following line “Performing in Spanish on Italian TV” saying how they are doing what people don’t want them to.

“Sometime in the future

Wondering if your mother still ever thinks of me” is Alex wondering if an older fan who has lost interest as a result of their change in sound, still ever thinks or listens to their music.

The chorus starts with “Blank canvases, leant against gallery walls” represents the fact that this new album they are putting on show is seemingly ‘bland’ to people. “Flowing towards sculptures of anything goes” ‘Sculptures’ could be a metaphor to the past albums, “Flowing towards” could also be the new album becoming a part of the discography.

“Puncturing your bubble of relatability” Is saying how as they have grown and matured, they are no longer relatable to the listener, the following line “With your horrible new sound” almost confirming that.

They also go reference the fact people praise their older albums while hating the new ones with “Baby those mixed messages ain’t what they used to be, when you said them out loud” Like how seeing the praise and hate online isn’t the same as hearing it to your face by everyone around you.
