Over 7000 homeless were housed in hotels, motels and empty student accommodation before a COVID-19 lockdown (Knight 2020). If homelessness were deemed as much of an emergency as coronavirus many thousands may have been housed already.

If the government spent $476 per week on 116,427 people they would spend close to $2.6B per year- much less than the current $8.4B figure (Chau 2021; ABS 2018; Department of Social Services 2020)

According to the Department of Social Services (2020) the Australian Government will spend around $8.4B in housing support and homelessness services. If that money was evenly shared among the homeless they’d receive over $72K each (ABS 2018).

According to the ABS (2017, 2018, 2020) 11.2%, or almost 1 million, houses were unoccupied on Census night and 116,427 people were considered homeless.
