i think people call damien a hot priest for the wrong reasons because sometimes I see dialogue that looks like something dead beat father midnight mass guy would say attached to his fics or fanart. he talks normal. he is a normal man from New York City. he called a priest he didn’t like “pal” before telling him to getvout of his room ((in the dream they added in some of the versions of the book)). he also knows what cunnilingus and orgies are because he’s in his 30s-40s. i think people are projecting some sort of pure virgin or corruption kink on to him when they could find someone else because 50% of priest characters are already like this.

he is so Normal outside of The Horrors and that’s special. hes just sarcastic and funny and mean occasionally and likes poetic prayers, he isn’t painting himself as poetically tortured and he doesn’t see himself as a martyr. and that’s why I love him badly.

finding out there were cherry blossoms in the exorcist and it was supposed to be spring changed my blood stream. wish there more spring horror stuff like shirley jacksons’ haunting of hill house. maybe there’s just more of that in horror books tho

ok ok part 2 of what I was saying. I know Chris is relatively typical or "boring" compared to Regan's Laura Palmer-like trauma further explored in the series and Damien Karras'......... Everything. But, she's sort of the the audience stand-in and at the very least she's got some personality to attach to her. Not to mention she gets more to do than weep in the background without a husband in the picture. Slim pickings back then. What passed for women's agency in the 50s and 60s was atrocious. I will say that I did think she was too mean to Karl and Sharon in the book, but also finding out that she was based off Shirley MacLaine has somewhat endeared me to her as a fan of The Children's Hour (dated but still important to lgbt film history in america) and musicals (Sweet Charity they weren't ready for you). Tragic yuri in The Children's Hour but under a lot of layers and a lot of self-hatred you have to look through due to the year it was made. Apparently Blatty wrote The Exorcist in between visiting Shirley MacLaine and her daughter Sachi (allegedly inspired Regan's cute personality at the start of the book) in The Children's Hour set, which also had a purple-violet poster

so damien thinks he’s in carrie by stephen king, chris thinks she’s in rosemary’s baby by ira levin, and regan, i think, is aware of what pazzuzu is doing the whole time but forgot because of trauma suppression. That’s what i believe. I don’t think she was unconscious for any of that sadly

a little part of me wants to believe regan was unconscious the whole time but the other part of me knows its probably unlikely 😔😔

I’m a little mad Chris in the book doesn’t do more after Damien (who I still love btw) transitions from a secondary pov to the only pov at that point until the epilogue. Like I wish I saw more of their back and forth and their inexperienced investigating and I’m sure there was more she could’ve contributed as the atheist who’s starting to believe in possession to Karras’ burned-out-catholic seeing Regan as a Carrie White more than a Damien Thorn. HOWEVER ☝️ I’m pretty sure more than 50% of the book passes before the exorcism investigation part so she’s been most of the focus. I just wish her presence was felt more consistently I guess. I think it’s just that people coming off of the movie would probably feel like it’s fluff before the more sinister stuff like I and some other readers did initially until I realized everything happening before (Burke’s cursing, Chris cracking jokes about lesbian nuns, Sharon’s absent horse boyfriend, Karl being Karl) were influencing Regan’s possessed behavior later as well as to build the growing desperation in Chris. Ok sending more Chris asks later this one is getting long.

I ordered a DVD version of "A Dog Called Vengeance" from a sketchy ass website, just so that I could have a frame of reference to how Damien Karras (same actor) would look in... well, in Nature's pajamas — frame of reference for unpublished, self-indulgent self-ship fanfics.

Okay, now that I've got your attention, I've always preferred karrasydyer and kindermandyer over everything else even the out-of-the-closet bisexual priest who can pull anyone, BUT I still see the appeal for all the canon or fanon relationships and think they're fun/tragic. Wish there were more alive lesbians in this franchise. Kat Rance I'm sorry all of that happened to you. Ballerinas are the most tortured people I've ever seen on film and by that I mean I also remember Black Swan. If "pride month" secretly has the word "de mon", why does pazuzu always have time to hurt the most martyr-coded tortured queer person in the room? happy pride

First time I watched the exorcist in cinemas I thought I was gonna faint because I was watching Damien Karras so intently. I’d never been so attracted to a man before he licherally started haunting me 😵‍💫 There were times I had what should’ve been typical horror nightmares unrelated to the movie, but then he’d show up and the genre would change drastically. Basically it was like being in a horror movie (nightmare) vs watching a horror movie (nightmare but some image or newspaper clipping of Damien From The Exorcist is there).

i wonder if all those people in the 70s actually only fainted and ran out of theaters because they wanted damien karras,, thank you anon you have given me a new perspective on life!! i agree so hard though ive never been this insane abt a fictional character
