The Hubs of Humanity 1
Prologue:
Back in the early 23rd century, as humanity began spreading its wings into the cosmos, the European Space Convention envisioned a groundbreaking project. They named it HUSB – Harmony of Urbanity and Space Bridges or as the public called it “The Hubs of Humanity”. At the projects core stood the idea to create a network of space stations and infrastructure pieces, each intricately designed to reflect Europe’s intricate designs and reflecting the architectural wonders of a wide range of European cities. It was like taking a slice of Paris, a bit of Barcelona, small snippets of Amsterdam and tiny amounts of Vienna and sprinkling their iconic look´s into the seemingly infinite abyss of interstellar space. The cities in the sky fostered significant cultural exchange, scientific collaboration, and good old human connection. Picture space stations modeled after the elegance of avant-garde designs of Berlin, the timeless charm of Rome or the sophistication of the medieval center of Prague.
Construction kicked of on a massive scale and for a while the project was the talk of the galaxy. The stations became marvels of their own right, embodying the spirit of humanity and its creativity. But as fate would have it, the early days of the 24th century brought a devastating cosmic cataclysm. An insidious computer virus, born from the depths of the digital unknown, infiltrated the project´s communication networks and databases. It spread like a raging wildfire, leaving chaos in its wake, and toppling the human economy and causing the once-thriving interconnected system into disarray. The fallout left a haunting legacy for the project, as the collapse progressed and databases where wiped clean many station dwellers decided to abandon their ships, leaving them adrift and causing them to vanish into the vast expanse of space without any trace left. They became cosmic ghosts, silently orbiting in the darkness, their stories and beauty lost to the void. Quickly forgotten by the rebuilding civilization that emerged from the ashes. Their memory fading into obscurity becoming fragments of an era long gone by. The civilization moved continually forward, leaving behind the mysterious past.
Many generations passed, and with the shift of cosmic currents, some of the long-forgotten stations reemerged from the cosmic background, having become new, beautiful obscure or even haunting shells of their former selves. Slowly many of them revealed new and diverse tapestries of fates. Some not just remnants but thriving hubs of life, sustained by reformed ecosystems and their resourceful inhabitants which had found a way to adapt to the sudden challenges of having to find ways to sustain their ways of living in space. Others had undergone large alterations, their original purposes re-imagined by advanced AI and machinery which was once designed to keep the stations operational. These technological custodians ensured the continued existence and advancement of these magnificent stations, evolving them into marvels of automated efficiency and sustainability.
The Hubs of Humanity: Aetherian Arboretum
Now after many of them had been long forgotten and become legends of a marvelous past the first of these celestial relics appeared at the edge of Humanities capital solar system. As it floated trough the vast reaches of the cosmos by pure chance it passed the outermost surveillance satellites of the Human system SOL1. There it was a space station which echoes the grandeur of an age long gone. A picturesque and mesmerizing blend of elegance and the neon glow of a bygone era. Tall ornate structures with their sinuous curves and intricate floral motifs rise from the main ring like structure and into the star lit fabric of space. Facades adorned with dim luminescent neon colors cast a surreal picture upon any eyes there to observe it. As it silently orbited throughout the cosmic ballet of space rocks of a region referred to as the Oort cloud it was greeted by a group of space vessels. Drawn towards it they cautiously approach the abandoned celestial haven.
As a group of explorers set foot onto it for the first time again, they marvel at the fusion of design and cosmic functionality. As they wander the deserted streets, the air is filled with an eerie silence, only broken by the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant hum of nature overtaking the space. Vines gracefully cascade town the sides of once bustling structures as they intertwine wit the fading light of neon signs that once proclaimed the names of businesses now long forgotten. The corridors and walkways once trodden by station dwellers, now play host to a delicate tapestry of nature. Moss covering lower grounds and growing through cracks in the flooring and resilient ferns and flowers also pushing their way through the seams. Tables, doors, and windows adorned with wrought-iron designs being claimed by encroaching vines. The almost ghostly neon glow flickering and casting a dreamlike scene into the explorers´ eyes. The grand arches and domes of the once famous trading hub now softened by the embrace of ivy and climbing roses.
Amid this fantastic scene of haunting beauty, unexpected inhabitants had found their niche – flocks of chickens, descendants of once domesticated birds, had adapted to the continuous darkness of the abandoned space station. Their plumage had taken on otherworldly beauty as it reflected the surrounding hues of dim neon lights. Their feathers colored in ethereal blends of deep purples, electric blues, and luminous greens they created a mesmerizing spectacle of shimmers and shadows as they moved through the silent station. These avian inhabitants adapted to the perpetual darkness of the station developing nocturnal rhythms and clucking that harmonized with the faint hum of the station´s former vibrancy. They had become the unexpected guardians of this rediscovered neon-lit legacy.
As the explorers reluctantly tore themselves away from these mesmerizing scenes, they delved deeper into the bowels of the ship, where they uncovered relics and objects of the once flourishing and passionate inhabitants. It also became evident that the station had undergone its profound metamorphosis, triggered by the exhaustion of its fusion systems and batteries several generations ago. The once state-of-the-art machinery had gracefully transitioned into a state of energy conservation. Basic life support systems hummed softly, maintaining the atmospheres delicately balanced atmosphere as the surroundings were bathed in the perpetual dim glow of neon lights, nurturing the lush flora overtaking the stations interiors. The artificial gravity modifier, a relic of advanced technology, continued to function on a minimal level. Its low persistent hum serving as an unseen orchestrator, allowing the abundance of plants and neon-feathered chickens to thrive in their cosmic sanctuary.
As the explorers continued their way through the corridors, they marveled at the ingenious processes that had sustained the stations delicate balance over the years. In this cosmic tapestry, the explorers sensed a quiet resilience. An enduring legacy left by a bygone era that unwittingly had given rise to this flourishing microcosm. The space station, now reemerged as a living testament to adaption, whispering its story of metamorphosis through the hushing echoes of its few still operational automated systems, the soft neon-glow of plant lights, and the vibrant clucks of chickens against the backdrop of the celestial stage.
With high anticipation, the explorers access the ship´s extensive database, eager to unveil the secrets hidden within the almost dreamlike structure they had been navigating. As the displays flickered to life, they revealed intricate schematics and blueprints of the station. The designation “Aetherian Arboretum” adorned the digital representations of the mighty station´s architecture. The name resonated with an ethereal quality, capturing the essence of this celestial haven. Armed with the new knowledge of the station´s identity, the explorers felt a deeper connection to it. As it stood as a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring spirit of exploration as it transcended its initial purpose as a hub of exploration and trade, evolving into a beacon of life amid the cosmic abyss. The name now etched into humanity’s records once again it was soon to become a thriving celestial haven again.
The news of the Arboretum´s rediscovery and its unique transformation captured the imagination of Earthlings in a wildfire. Recognizing its unique historical and ecological significance, authorities and swiftly declared it a protected zone and placed it under historic and natural preservation. The once-abandoned station a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and technology, underwent careful restoration with the goal of preserving its unique atmosphere while allowing eager tourists to experience the surreal beauty of the station in a small selected section. During the beginning of its restoration, the celestial sanctuary was moved in a stable orbit around Saturn, creating a celestial backdrop that added to the mystique of the cosmic destination. As visitors disembarked onto the transformed space station, they marveled at the now again neon-lit arches, domes and towers, the vibrant flora and the more than enthusiastic clucking of the specially adapted chickens. Educational Programs were established quite quickly to inform about the Arboretum´s rich history, its transformation and the unique ecosystem within it. Conservationists closely monitoring the neon-feathered chickens, ensuring their well-being and natural behavior are not disturbed in any significant way. As the space station orbited Saturn, the "Aetherian Arboretum" stood not only as a destination for eager earthlings but as a symbol of the boundless potential for exploration, preservation, and the celebration of the cosmic wonders that unfolded beyond the confines of Earth.

Humans and their strange culture 10
Every now and then the ship had to make a stop at the human’s home planet. This was always one of the most exiting times of each assigned mission as the crew almost always got new human recruitments assigned to them. Nearly all the time the new and the preassigned human crew members would get along and engage in conversation. But on very rare occasions there seemed to be e bit of a communication barrier almost as if they were not speaking the same languages which seems especially odd considering they belon to the same species and come from the very same planet.
It took quite a long time for the captain and many crew members to figure out what was going on. Apparently, the dominant species of the planet called “Earth” may be defined into around 195 entirely separate nations and more than 6,500 completely different languages. This was one of the most surprising facts about humans and was quickly added to the handbook. But this did not explain why some of the human crew got along immediately. It took another while and a bit of investigation for the captain to find out about the most obvious thing regarding human linguistics.
It turned out that most humans not only speak on of their home planets languages. Most of them at least spoke two but quite a big amount spoke even more and in most recent times humans had also learned to decipher, learn, and teach an even wider variety as they wanted to communicate, study, analyse and better understand their extra-terrestrial counterparts.
This led to the discovery that humans are not only able to reproduce almost any sound they hear no matter if it originated from linguistics or if it was of a non-natural origin. Even more interesting was the ability to communicate without using any linguistics but rather use their hands to communicate humans which are unable to use their hearing. This was something many alien species had not yet thought of and lead to an intergalactic revolution as an intergalactic Sign language was implemented and finally even species which were and are not able to hear could be studied and eventually contacted.

Humans and their strange culture 9
It was a day, more busy than usual but nothing extraordinary. She concentrated on the preparation for the cyclical checkup of the crew and the ship. She had to tell the new humans what to do, this task could be very nerve wrecking due to the range of languages the human species is speaking. But luckily she’s got her universal translator which got nearly any language of the known technical developed species.
Although she could well remember the beginning of the translator after the first contact with the humans was established. It was pure chaos. On most planets of the galaxy only one or very few languages are spoken as due to the technical development a universal language was often agreed on.Â
But not the humans although they had already a world spanning system of economy, politics and communication they still had more than 200 languages spoken by a majority of their species but these were only the bigger ones as there officially where more than 2000 languages spoken across their small world. At first, we made contact with only a few of their so called “countries” which were small independent territories of which nearly every single one, spoke a different language. At first, we did not notice, only when we exchanged and tried to put the data together we realized there was something odd not only did the languages not compute and work with each other but also the writing systems varied on a level we had never before encountered it on a planet before. It took us a few years and a lot of patience, and we finally had a bit of an idea of the human system of speech and writing. At least we thought so until we got hit with dialects and  slang. When we finally had it brought to a stage where it was nearing a nearing completion, we had already given up on having every language programmed in it. And when it finally was finished and ready to be sold and distributed, humans bought more of the devices than nearly all of the other species combined.Â
But this seemed appropriate as they mentioned have so many languages and it gave them the opportunity to cooperate on completely different level.Â
But there still were a lot of malfunctions especially when the humans joked or when they used a special form of speaking called “sarcasm”. It confused the heck out of a lot of species and then there were not only undertones you had to recognize but also the humans' origin and their body language.
(Hopefully you like my new entry and I am so sorry I don’t post regularly)

Humans and their strange culture 8
The ship had just landed to stock up on food, water and fuel. So the crew decided to stay on the planet and enjoy some free time. So during the night a thunderstorm rolled in and the humans seemed to be drawn towards the observation deck and towards windows.Â
But what was it about?
They simply stared out the window into the dark stormy night illuminated by lightning strikes every now and then. While some of them seemed scared and worried others just had this fascinated and interested looks on their faces. But why, they live and grow up on a planet which is home to many different climates which are home to so many different and ever-changing weathers. There are hurricanes snow storms heat waves and even thunderstorms.Â
So why?
Apparently the humans just love the ambiance these situations create, the sounds during such events and even the patterns. It's just in the nature of humans they just simply are fascinated by so simple things and looking back at their history it is no wonder. But regarding this it would be a big mistake to think this makes them weak. They seem so simple, but they actually survived and documented many horrible, horrible natural disasters they were confronted with. Ranging from tsunamis, earthquakes volcanoes and many others leveling entire metropolises and costing hundreds of thousands of lives, and they still rebuilt them bigger and better than ever before.  But finally the morning approached, the ship took of and everything got back to normal as it seemed.
(Got the inspiration for this because it snowed today for the first time this winter and i was completely satisfied by it although I have seen it snow so many times before)

Humans and their strange culture 7
Where were these strange tunes, rhythms and sounds coming from?Â
As it seemed none of the other crewmembers around him seemed to notice it or they simply ignored it. The tunes were clearly coming out of one of the ventilation shafts. It was a bit strange as he knew that these shafts lead to one of the humans recreational areas. He moved a little closer towards the shaft, he now could clearly hear some lyrics being sung. He was terrified as he could hear the lyrics clearly were about death, love, friendship and murder all within a few verses.
Powered by curiosity and a bit of fear he simply had to take a look. He went downstairs opened the door and was surprised by the wild variation of appliances and materials inside the room. He now could hear the music clearly it came from a human which was siting at one of the machines working on some sort of material. Besides the human was a small electric device. The human looked up for a short moment directly into his eyes only to then look down at the objects he was working on. He had to approach the human and with every step the music got louder and louder only now he realised that it was completely different than the tunes he had heard before.Â
The human noticed the Captains interest in the music so he asked him what he thought about it. The Captain seemed confused as most species use music to impress a potential mating partner or to warn about danger.
But these humans always had strange concepts of social systems. He had to ask now what the lyrics were about and the human just simply meant that depending on the genre they can bee about somebodies feeling, politics or opinion. Humans sometimes use it to cope with their feelings, to distract themselves, to escape from their lives or to play while they work on something.Â
Now there was only one thing, why would the human play the music that loud?

Humans and their strange culture 6
There it was again a silent but still clearly hear able buzzing followed by all the humans checking their pockets until one would get out a small electronic devise made out of glass, precious metals and some other materials.
It was unclear to her what these where because every time this occurred the human would leave the room or put it back into one of the pocket.  As it seemed there exist many variations of these, but she had seen them only from afar. But as she was invited to one of the humans evening dinners, so she could ask one of them if she had the opportunity. During the dinner she could clearly see them lying on the table, they were shining up every now and then, sometimes they were buzzing then the human would either type in something or excuse themselves and leave the room for a short time and come back excuse themselves again and sit down as if nothing happened. In the end she completely forgot about it, so she decided to offer the human to help clean up the plates. Â
So she asked while helping and the human showed her, she got to see one of the devices hold it. She got to know that nearly every human owns one of these and that they are some sort of personal communication device. She also got to know that these aren't the only devices humans own. There are things called smartwatches which as she understood monitor their health, their body activity and even their sleep.
But there are so many more like headphones which are used to listen to music or there are laptops and tablets and so many more. But why would humans need so many different sorts of personal computers many members of her species could only afford a personal computer or a personal communication device if they were in a higher position in the military or if they were some sort of politician.
When asked why and how humans could afford to mass manufacture such a wild variety of devices and gadgets. The only answer she got was that humans don't really care about the resources needed to produce these. Since humans can travel trough the endless depth of space they now harvest asteroids for materials. She was quite concerned when she had to think about the waste and garbage this would produce. She already knew about the wasteful lifestyles humans during the 21st century and if humanity would have not put down their wasteful lifestyles they would have destroyed earth and its fragile ecosystem but according to data earths ecosystem and pollution levels were completely fine.Â
But as she had known there were still a lot of things to learn about humans and their strange culture

Humans and their strange culture 5
Humans are so magnificent especially their ability to adapt to their planets countless climates. They didn’t wait until they could engineer their genes, so they could survive in extreme cold and hot weather. Humans simply sent some of their kind and looked what would happen. Sometimes the firs try was a failure, so they tried over and over again, until they had settlements all over the planet. They developed cities and infrastructure in places you couldn't imagine.
No matter if it was a dessert, a volcanic island or in a place where temperatures were always below freezing. It is a well-known fact that they all originated from the same continent, but they developed different types of cuisine, architecture, writing systems and even technologies. Until their species developed technologies to transport people and goods in masses and their progress went forward faster and faster. As their technology progressed it only took few centuries, and they started wars which include weapons of mass destruction and only a few years later they went into space for the first time. It was amazing watching them progress further but also a little worrying.Â
They were so self-destructive but at that time it would have been too dangerous to contact them because they still weren't technological advanced enough, and they were still a very young species. It wasn't easy watching them as they hurt themselves however it was remarkably awesome watching them fight and rise again. They rebuild their cities faster every time even if there were reduced to piles of rubble and stone. They were feared all over the cosmos and everybody knew to not start a war with them if you could not wipe them out completely.Â
When they ventured into the endless depth of space, we weren't prepared, we were afraid and couldn’t believe how advanced they were. Their will to survive and their ability to adapt to planets we thought would never become a colony of any species but humans proved us wrong they settled on every free planet and harvested most asteroids they could find. The area they descended from was quite hostile and nearly no systems near them were populated or claimed by anyone, so we let them roam free. Until one day, when we first made contact. They weren't feared anymore they became beloved members of the galactic confederation. Their desire to learn everything we knew was strange and a little suspicious to us, so we kept an eye on them.

Humans and their strange culture 4
Today the captain got a message and she seemed quite concerned as one of her crewmembers thought the humans are hurting each other while socialicing in one of their living quarters. So she went to do a little Research but she could not find any reason or cultural meaning for humans to do so. After her shift that day she was still trying to figure out why humans would do that but they were known to be self destructive as they had two world wars within about fifty solar cycles.
As she was wandering down a hallway, she noticed a buzzing sound from a human crewmembers quarter. She listened a few second and heard two voices inside and a few noises which seemed to be caused by pain. She was a little scared to open the door, so she decided to wait until the next day and ask the human what this was about.
The next day she noticed something else, one of the humans had his arm wrapped in foil and a strange paste applied. She was about to ask about it when she noticed the skin underneath which had some sort of drawing on it. It seemed a little strange and odd but still it was so colorful and looked so great. She hesitated to ask because she was so amazed by this art, still she had to know why and how humans do this. Human skin was quite similar to the skin of her own species but they would not draw on it or wrap it in foil. When she asked the human he simply said it is something about aesthetics and a bit about culture.
The answer was a litlle unpleasing but then the buzzing sound from the day before came to her mind. She was about to ask when one of the humans asked her if she would like to see how these small artworks are created. As she was very curious about it she only nodded. The human told her where his quarters were and left.
She was very excited to learn something new about human life and their culture. Finally her shift was over and she could witness the procedure to change the color of skin. When she arrived at the door, she was shocked to discover that it was the same one she heard the buzzing sound the day before. To be polite she knocked on the door and waited a few seconds before the human opened the door. There was a padded kind of table in the room with a small strange machine nearby.
The human looked at her and asked if she only wanted to know how humans colour their skin so bright and with so nice patterns, or if she wanted to have one of these artworks herself. She had to think about it twice, but then she decided to give it a chance. At first she had to choose a motive or pattern and then she had to sit onto the padded table. in the beginning it hurt a litte but after a while they started to talk about it and she fount out that the artworks are achieved by many needles which bring the colored pigments under a few layers of skin and stay there permanently. It took so much time and there were many things they talked about but the result was so beautiful. She still didn’t know the meaning or use behind these so called “tattoos” but at least she knew that humans are creative and unique when it comes to body decorations.
She thanked the human and mentioned that she had no idea that humans decorate their way in such nice and simple ways. The human was a little surprised, only to mention that this was not the only way humans decorate themselves. As there was no time to ask which ones, he only said the she should pay attention to the appearance of humans and she will notice.

Humans and their strange culture 3
The growth in human crewmembers caused a change in their social behaviour. The aliens were irritated because it seemed that the humans were gathering in groups speaking different languages. This was considere very odd as they come from such a small planet and there is only one dominant species and no other technological evolved one they would need to communicate with
The Aliens allready knew humans were strange so they did not bother to ask them why they speak so many different language and why some of them speak a variety of earths languages. So a few days had passed and the aliens noticed some languages were quite common arount the galaxy but why would humans speak a few alien languages on earth are they hidding something from them or what?
The humans had no explanaiton for this especially not why some of the languages they considered were unique are in fact commonly spoken in parts of the galaxy they had never heard of. There were languages like french, german, and russian spoken throughout entire sections of the galaxy. So humans considered most of their languages unique but they weren’t at all. On the other handd their planet was unique in the way that there were so many languages and they humans could impersonat sounds, voices and language from many other species including some of the hardest alien languages you could ever try to learn or speak.Â

Humans and their strange culture 2
The ship just received new mission instruction. They had to explore a solar System not far awaybut before they could start they had to stop by at a human space colony to restock their supplies and get a few repair jobs done.
In human eyes it was a rather normal space station but by alien standarts it was enormous. When aliens showed humans how to build gravity controlling devices they did not expected to see humans build such technical marvles neither did they think humans would be able to construct something that big and beautiful but there it was. Bigger than every other space station they had ever seen orbiting arround a star sized like the humans home star. When they entered for the first time they could not believe what they saw. Ther wer plants everywhere. People wizh traditional clothing from earth, every skincolor imaginable and with strange Patterns on their Skin but not all of them had These. Some even had Metall pieces pierced through different bodyparts. As far as the Aliens knew these Patterns were called tattoos and had no real meaning to the human but their Looks dependet on Tradition and man there were a lot of them. Each part of their home planet had different Traditions depending on many Things like country, climate and religion. But this colony was so amazing there was so many different food, there were plants animals and many different markets so you could not only buy supplies for the ship. They had to spend a few days there so they could explore the colony a little more. They saw things they could not possibly imagine. There was this big domed area on top of the sructure which was covered in flora and fauna but the most amazing part of the ship were the big bodies of water filled with seacreatures. They tasted food from all of their cultures which were tasting a hell lot of better than the food served in the ships cafeteria but they weren’t that nutritious. Another Thing to mention is that the humans are constantly working on updating the Station, keeping it clean and even redesigning various parts but the most impressing is that they althoug they weren’t that technical evolved when the first contact between the two species happend they have adapted the technic quite fast. No other species did this so fast except for them. The day the ship left the station the crew had a few human members more most of which were scientists who were higly interested in exploring the new solar system. They hoped to find another planet or even a new alien civilization but only the future would know.

Human and their strange culture 1
As the first humans start to work on alien ships the aliens try to replicate human quaters like their homes includig living rooms, kitchens and sometimes even other rooms they have never heard of. So a few weeks passed and the humans start working nearly everywere. First the Aliens notice a few strange patterns in social and work behavior but they aren’t worried because they know humans are strange. One day some of the Aliens notice a strange scent and a loud conversation from one of the humans quarters so they take a look only to find a group of them gathered inside sitting around a table eating and socializing. As the humans notice them they invite them to sit down and dine with them. The Aliens accept as they know a humans invitation is a good sign they like them or they want to show of some of their culture so this is a good way to learn more about them.
As time passes the aliens try some of the food and are quite amazed by the variations of dishes. There are hot, cold sweet and spicy dishes all of which are from different human cultures.Ttheir conversations are quite strange but still fascinating. They mention things from every part of their life. They are starnge but there are things that are so fascinating about them like them growing plants inside their quaters and living side by side with other species so called pets. The humans quarter they were in had both plants and pets as the human showed them. By this chance they also found out why the human has been in the workshop so much. It seem that he buildt planting pots and stations so he could grow plants he would use to spice up different dishes or just for decorations. he build a very weird object out of glass and steel which was filled with water, plants and weird creatures swimming in it.
When they asked about the purpose the human simply answered that there was no purpose it was only for aestetics and so the quarter would feel more livable. The aliens don’t quite get it but if the human needs it it must be important for him.
When they leave they are still a little confused however they are happy that they have learned a bit about human life. They hope to get another Chance to learn more pretty soon.
