I have 2 separate thumb drives labeled "Master Copy" and "TOFV"

The Master Copy is my initial save point of all my work. TOFV (The Oh Fuck Vault) is kept at my house in a box, and only ever leaves that box when I finish a chapter of my projects.

Absolutely NEVER leave your only copy in an online medium. Half the time im writing, im not connected to the internet.

people who write their fics directly onto archive of our own site do not fear death by the way

in all seriousness, please always keep backups of your works, write them somewhere else (google doc is a good choice) then copy and paste onto ao3 when you're done, because ao3 itself does not automatically save your works for you, meaning you can lose all of your progress

(Yay! Aris is having another TPoR writing crisis!!)

Lately, every time, I've sat down to try and work on my fic. I've had a burning hatred in my gut. I want to print out all I've written so far and throw it into the shredder. Then take the shredded remains of my works, put it all in a metal bucket, drench it in lighter fluid, and drop a match on it.

I've put my heart and soul into this fic. I've created 5 stages of the main characters AC. I've made new ACs for new OCs that I'd be adding when I start to diverge from the og story. Hell, I bought a laptop for the sole purpose of being able to write when I'm NOT at home! I made a financial investment into this damned fanfic of a video game!

But every time I look at It... I hate what is looking back at me...

I almost want to just set what I've written aside and start over. Go back to the beginning and tell the story again. Use what I've already written as a base and just... remake it

Have a plan. Maybe just play thru the entirety of the game as 621-Artificer and take notes. Map put what I WANT to actually do for each story point instead of. "Well, I know I want to do. (All things that are VERY end game content)"

I am proud of what I've been able to write. REALLY I AM! But at the same time, I absolutely hate it. I hate that I've rewritten the same damn flashback scene 5+ times. I love and hate how I have no true separation between narrative description and pov character internal monolog. I hate that I've been stuck with my draft of chapter 5, having a 900-1k word count for over 3 weeks.

I just... Want to be able to look back at this story in a year and be able to smile at what I've made.

As I try to improve my technical writing skills, I've noticed my describing skills are pretty lacking. So, here is a list of description exercises.

Setting Description

Pick a setting and describe it in a way that evokes a positive emotion, then describe the same setting negatively.

Pick a setting and try to describe it by using all of your senses.

Find a setting you've written before and write 500 words of pure description on it.

Describe a tree from the point of view of a character that's feeling a strong emotion, whether they're depressed, frustrated, or excited.

Character Description

Pick one of your characters and write a 500 word description of them.

Write a 500 word description on how your character feels about different people.

Pick 3 different characters and write 200 word descriptions for each of their voices.

Write a 500 word description about how your character looks at different people.
