So, Griffin was halfway there. How Jack acted about everything suggested he wanted to stay friends, at least. There wasn't a lot she could do, though. She'd been there before, pushing people away for their own good. Saying things were fine didn't soothe the irrational fears, let alone Jack's valid one.

Mari couldn't feel smaller if she tried. Hearing him admit that - all of it - and knowing nothing she did could fix it settled on her shoulders like she was Atlas. Christ, was this what Delia felt like watching her with Viper? Little wonder they barely got along. Mari took a breath, started to say something, then let it go as she breathed out. What was she supposed to say?

Mari reached out a hand to at least pat Jack's shoulders, but hesitated with it near him in case he didn't want to be touched. "It's not fair, no." She hesitated, shifting her weight a bit before attempting to touch Jack between the shoulder blades. "I can't tell you what to do here, but...." Mari swallowed. How many details could she leave out here? "I regret doing that to Anna, so...." Another hesitation before she added, "And it was pretty cold that night, so I don't think Vincent made it far. I'm not exactly eager to check on how he's doing, you know?"

She could ask Devin to look into it, but that would entail her leaving out a ton of details for both parties involved. Devin wasn't stupid, either. She could say it was for their own safety, but he might go and do something heroic that he didn't walk away from if Vincent was alive. Getting any of her other friends to check on it was out of the question. Jack wasn't supposed to be alive, and everybody but Mitch would ask too many questions. Mitch would try to solve the problem himself...much like Devin, if for different reasons.

Mari could settle with not knowing, assuming Vince left her alone. She had no issues with Schrödinger's Hypothermia. It wasn't going to be that easy for Jack. It wasn't easy losing Viper.

Mari swallowed again, hating that she didn't have the answer here. "I don't know.... How can I help? Can I do anything?" She didn't think she could, but she might as well ask.

Jack hummed a hesitant affirmative to Mari’s first question. The weight of a thousand words he wanted to say sat on his tongue, but he couldn’t bring himself to say a single one. It was probably for the best he didn’t share the details, anyhow.

Jack’s mouth twitched, and he shifted his weight nervously. “He knows about me,” he murmured with a bit of a blush. “And, um, he kind of knows about Vincent. He doesn’t know that part, but…”

He hesitated as he tried to figure out what he was trying to say, what he wanted to say, why he couldn’t talk to Griffin about it, but. It was difficult. How was he supposed to…? And why would he want to, when he knew what could happen.

Jack shook his head, whatever bits of a blush he had just a moment or two ago long gone by now. “He doesn’t need this,” he muttered. The words, however quiet, made his chest ache. Jack drew in a shaky breath. “It’s not fair!” he whispered, and he felt childish saying so. He could feel his eyes about to, start to, water, and he felt so childish and wrong and horrible for feeling this way. For being this way. For speaking this. “I’m so scared all the time. He’s gone, and I’m-m still so scared he’ll come back- that he’s watching- I-I can’t do anything. He needs to be gone. I need to know he’s gone. I can’t live like this. I can’t-”

Mari's first thought was thank god. When Jack said he loved her, it wasn't romantic...unless he was bisexual like her. She didn't think it was appropriate to ask right then, though. What Jack was explaining - what he was trying to explain - seemed more important. Between Jack's worry that Griffin would die badly and Vincent's seeming homophobia, it wasn't hard to connect a few dots.

Chalk up another reason Mari wanted to strangle Vincent.

"So...you're worried he'll come for Griffin if he's still out there?" It wasn't a shot in the dark - not completely - but it did make a couple of assumptions. It wouldn't be enough to tell Jack his fear was irrational, either. If people died around him every time he got close to a guy, and Vincent had a problem with Jack's sexuality, it was a valid concern to have.

The corner of Mari's mouth twitched as she let out a breathy, humorless chuckle. What an impossible situation. She could see where Jack was coming from with this now. "I'd ask why you didn't tell Griffin that, but I assume he either doesn't know about Vincent, doesn't know about you, or both?"

Jack hummed a quiet note in acknowledgement of Mari’s answer about her family, but if he had any thoughts on that he kept it to himself.

He reflexively half shrugged and looked away at Mari’s question of ‘why’, his heart beating in his throat. The urge to hide it was habit at this point, as was the fear, but he sought to push through. Mari was safe. Mari was like him, he was safe.

Jack’s voice was quiet when he spoke. Careful and unsteady, like walking over an old, rope bridge. “Vincent found out about me by himself.  We never talked about it.  I think- if we didn’t say it- he could pretend it wasn’t true… until I start hanging out with someone. Or he sees some guy being nice to me. Even if nothing’s going on, he can’t- He doesn’t-“ Jack bit his tongue in frustration, not entirely sure of what words he was trying to say himself.

For Jester's part, he couldn't believe it. Not only did she stand around while he was shot, she was going to banish him? And who the hell was this guy to give her that option? He had unfinished business here, and she was his best bet. It was beyond frustrating to follow her around without being noticed, but now that he had a voice, she was going to ignore him? "No, I want to talk to her. Don't take her anywhere!"

“Yeah, she doesn’t live too far from here. As long as she isn’t busy with artwork than she’d make time for us,” Davy said, pulling his phone out and sending the artist a message. She was a pretty normal person, in the grand scheme of people that had to deal with the deceased. Davy didn’t mind them too much, but he didn’t have the ability to exactly move them along the way that the others did. He was basically a glorified therapist in the one way that he could help someone move on.

“I really don’t like dealing with Bryce either way, so I appreciate that choice,” Davy said, and he knew that the lawyer was more than they said that they were. “Well, fingers crossed this is the only ghost that you have to get rid of.’

Mari sucked a breath between her teeth, considering the options. The last thing she wanted was to ignore the problem until it was too big to handle. Jester was a nervous mouse in life, but they gave him enough reason to be angry now. Not that he didn't deserve it, being a narc and all.

But she knew him for a couple of years. He was the guy in the corner of Twists that she had to coax into celebrations when they first met. They lived in the same building, prowled the same territory, and dealt with the same people day in and day out. While she really should say "fuck him" and be done with it because of the threat he posed to their entire way of life -
