It's happening.
It's not as simple as "websites profit off of sex workers just to dump them and go mainstream." It would be way more profitable to KEEP sex workers on the platform. This is a combination of a lot of different things. There is a tremendous amount of pressure from anti-porn folks and Mastercard and they will also likely lose their banking if they don't.
This isn't just going to be OnlyFans. The platforms that sex workers migrate to may also be in danger of debanking and site closures, if not in the immediate future then as soon as they become popular enough to warrant the next smear campaign.
I'm going to try to explain all of this the best that I can- but it is a very difficult and complex issue that personally impacts me. The bottom line is that there has been an ongoing war against sex work and porn that's driven by moral panic and stigma. It's how we lost Backpage. It's how P*rnHub, as imperfect and problematic as it may have been, lost their banking. It's also what's potentially going to cause a purge of online sex work platforms.
Mastercard released a set of new regulations to begin in October that will in essence ban platforms from using them to process payments. Completely ignoring the adult industry standards that are already in place- they have decided that they will require things like 24/7 moderation of every single live stream and pre-approval of every single photo and video uploaded. They also require age verification and consent forms, which most platforms ALREADY require. So it's a lot of stuff that sounds reasonable on the surface, but 1) platforms already do most of these things and 2) it will be a huge financial expense to some platforms to be able to keep up with some of these new regulations.
There's also the fact that if any of these platforms are deemed associated with trafficking or CSAM (which often happens due to smear campaigns orchestrated by religious orgs like NCOSE (AKA "Morality in Media") and Exodus Cry) then they risk having their banking taken away.
So the fact that OF is banning explicit material in October is not a coincidence.
The last part that I want to talk about, which is probably the most uncomfortable and most controversial part of this- is CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material AKA "child porn"). As things are right now, there will always be a nonzero number of cases of CSAM on any platform. However, adult websites actually do an exponentially better job at moderating and removing that content than a lot of social media giants. This doesn't stop people from making articles about "CSAM found on OnlyFans!" that are just meant to attack the largest platform that has given power directly to indie sex workers & performers.
Facebook self-reported over 20 million instances of CSAM. This is a figure that is easily google-able and verifiable.
I haven't been able to find a figure anywhere near that for OnlyFans, which is a website that has some of the most strict age verification requirements of any adult platform. I have found one figure about 2-3 dozen missing children found on OF- but this article was written by someone who purposely tried to evade OF's verification system using a 17 year old's photos and her older sister's ID... and failed because he was unable to connect a bank account. Breaking who knows how many laws and site rules in the process. (Yes, really. Here's a good tweet thread by Ashley Lake that goes into more depth.)
I've seen varied figures for P*rnHub from hundreds to thousands- but I think it's important to note that some articles specifically took numbers out of context to say that ALL unverified content that was removed from PH was CSAM. It was not. Again, PH has had its failures and I'm not defending them as much as I'm saying "this is what the actual numbers suggest."
So, Facebook, who has the most strict rules against explicit and sexual content, has had over 20 million instances of CSAM. Other social media websites with similar restrictions have similar figures in the hundreds of thousands/millions. This suggests that removing/censoring adult content does not lead to decreased CSAM.
That means that when Tumblr was threatened to be removed from the app store after SESTA/FOSTA passed over accusations of CSAM and The Purge happened- it mostly just harmed sex workers and LGBT folks and sex educators and did little, if anything, to prevent any CSAM.
People are directly trying to associate sex workers with predators and pedophiles. People are directly trying to associate sex work with trafficking & CSAM. This is not by mistake. This is not coincidental.
The income loss associated with OnlyFans and other platforms removing adult content will put people on the streets. It will make people homeless. Due to stigma, it is also incredibly difficult to leave the industry and get a ""real"" job because how do you explain resume gaps? How many employers are okay with hiring former sex workers?
If online sex workers lose their ability to safely make an income, if more of them turn to FSSW which is far more criminalized, there will be deaths.
Until there is a REAL push to organize for sex workers rights, we are going to keep seeing these cycles repeat in our online spaces. It is more important now than ever to advocate for sex workers ability to work, freely, without fear of arrest. To advocate for decriminalization and reduce stigma. Advocate to allow sex workers to be able to work without fear of losing a bank account or a payment processor or a platform that generated their income.

POST PLUS IS COMING, WHETHER YOU WANT IT OR NOT!
Despite the fancy survey, changes to the UI and TOS reveal we’re getting the service in the future whether we want it or not. Obviously, Post+ is a terrible idea that is trying to bank revenue on user content. Unlike patreon or onlyfans, tumblr’s primary focus is on FAN content. The legality of this is NOT in the users favor and as the new tumblr TOS states, said users will be entirely liable for whatever legal matters arise.
SO WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Besides filling out the survey, it’s time to show tumblr we mean business and show our displeasure by hitting them where it hurts.
Ad revenue.
We’re proposing a 24 hour log off as phase one of this protest.
WHEN IS THE PROTEST?
AUGUST 6th, 2021        12 am Eastern Time (US)          5 am Greenwich Mean Time          6 am Central European Time          8 am Moscow Standard Time          1 pm Australian Western Time          2 pm Japan Standard Time          3:30 pm Australian Central Time          4 pm Australian Eastern Time AUGUST 5th, 2021          11 pm Mountain Time (US)            9 pm Pacific Time (US)
THE END TIME IS 24 HOURS FROM START TIME!!!
So no posting, no queues, no likes, and no reblogs!
WHAT IF I CAN’T/WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
Like this post and share it AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE. Use the hashtags #tumblrlogoff2021 or #postplusprotest on ANY and ALL social media.
WILL THIS WORK?
Maybe, maybe not. It’s an attempt at doing SOMETHING.

This year, on the 31 March, we lost Gilbert Baker, gay artist and creator of the gay pride flag. Today we would celebrate his 66th birthday. Let’s remember him as the wonderful person he was.
