Animal Crossing Longpost

Just putting my thoughts all in one place. Partial rant and partial praise. What I’d want to see in a new game.

With pocket camp “gone” I would love to see the furniture and clothing from it moved over to the main games. I wouldn’t even be mad if it was still through fortune cookies. Going to Nook’s to see what fortune cookies they had in ACNL had me playing daily.

Look at that hat! That’s gorgeous! Give me that in the regular game!

Also locking certain furniture behind the DLC felt shitty. And it was stuff like “soap dispenser” not even themed stuff. I was expecting more Souvenir Shop from Tortimer Island out of it.

I miss little town things like the Town Tree or Serena’s Fountain.

Speaking of which, breakable tools? Did not like. It just got annoying after a while. I could have tolerated it if the gold tool sets were unbreakable, but they aren’t. They were reduced to a checkbox off an achievement list at most.

Special characters! I know Label is supposed to be our new stand-in for Gracie but it’s not the same. It kinda ties in with the whole “they took the edge out of the characters” discussion. Yes, Gracie could be mean. Oh well though? I don’t dislike Label but at least like throw in some mail from Gracie or have her wander the Able Sisters on rare occasion.

I also miss Pelly and Phyllis. They’d have been perfect to take over at night so it didn’t look like Tom and Isabelle never slept. The sisters taking shifts was such a nice detail back in Wild World. Oh gosh, a small percent chance for one of them to do the morning announcements if Isabelle was running late would have been precious.

Also, sue me, I miss the silly festivals. Cornimer’s festival was adorable and could have been expanded to include the mushroom forage available in ACNH.

The horse has been beaten to death, but I’ll still mention it, the villager dialogue was god-awful in this game. Reduced to crumbs of a personality type and their appearances. Aside from Tiansheng (who I only like because he’s based on the Monkey King) I made no new favorites playing ACNH.

More horses: not being able to upgrade the shop sucked. They compacted it pretty well not gonna lie, but I wouldn’t have been mad with a simple second floor expansion. Just a set of stairs and some extra furniture choices.

Celeste being a wandering random NPC sucked ROYALLY. Okay, look, all I wanted was the giant robot but to complete it you need to get a rocket recipe from Celeste. 800 hours and nothing! Not even with time travel. That’s booty odds. Give her the observatory already. There was a free space across from The Roost for a reason.

The museum was gorgeous though. No notes. Absolutely beautiful in every wing. Did I complete the art wing? No, I never do. But I completed it more than I ever have. No notes there, gorgeous execution.

Mini games! I spent hours on Tortimer Island. Also hide and seek on the main island! That stuff was my JAM. More of that please.

The camping site feature was nice but I felt like it quickly lost its charm. I liked it for sure and decorating it was fun. But I personally got barely any use out of it.

Special NPC’s were so cute! Wolf Link, Ganon, Epona. Those were done right. I don’t know why they couldn’t repeat that for the Sanrio amiibo series. Why is Rilla (Hello Kitty) a gorilla and not a cat? Why is Pompompurin a bear and not a dog? Cinnamoroll an elephant instead of a rabbit? I think it was dumb.

I love Étoile though. Never heard of “Little Twin Stars” and they look like humans so whatever. Sleepy sheep will do. ALSO! Put the sheep back in their scarves. The scarves were precious in Pocket Camp and now they’re in shirts. It looks a little weird.

Being able to access Luna and visit other islands from any bed was a nice detail. Liked that a lot. Her little gyroid defuser is adorable. Super wish it was an obtainable item in the games.

I understand the point of Harv’s island. Having access to many of the town hall visitors at any time was convenient but personally? I didn’t like it very much. Don’t totally know why. I don’t need access to Katrina 24/7 but she was so rare in previous games so it was always exciting when she did come around. Also she feels a bit out of place set up outside. I miss her dark and mysterious tent.

Yeah, all in all I’m not really feeling the whole island vibe. I miss my town and train station. My first game was Wild World and even nostalgia isn’t strong enough to sway me away from believing that New Leaf really did have the best setup for the game.

I’m a sucker for tree growth in games. New Leaf’s town tree was cute but I also loved the Entralink tree back when Pokemon B/W was still new.

Take the train to get to the city. Use the DAL to get to other towns. I actually prefer Redd’s trawler showing up at the dock.

Anyone else miss shooting down the UFO with the slingshot? I do. I do wish it was actually a little alien NPC rather than Gulliver.

The FRUIT TREES! Gosh I can’t believe I forgot. New Leaf had so many varieties of fruit trees! I loved being able to collect them all and make orchards in my towns. And there were special ones! The perfect variations!
