i find coming of age's title so ironic because i really do feel like takumi on that route is not only at his worst(as a person, not mentally), but isn't really coming of age
either because. well. one of the routes has him permanently dying
or because well. imo a part of becoming an adult is realizing that the world and people are way more complicated than you realized. that "bad" people have hteir own struggles and "good" people can betray you.
and guess what takumi fails to do there? he constantly seeks easy answers that line up to his past experiences. coming of age has zero lore drops whatsoever, but what's worse is how it affects takumi's interpersonal relationships. his relationship with nozomi, despite getting more explicit romantic focus than it usually does, always rings kinda hollow to me. he doesn't really know that much about her, and what he does know isn't something she's had the experience of trusting him enough to tell him. it's like he gets to skip the hard parts. not helping that she even asks if he's projecting karua onto her, and he just...never responds or confronts that at all (he is! he very much is! this nozomi hasn't had much time with you, takumi!)
and of course. in what might be the worst thing he does in at least half of the game's endings, he asks sirei to brainwash eito. and idk what gets me more, that the post-sparing dialogue if you pay attention does suggest eito's capable of change and is changing/growing to trust takumi and that just gets ignored. or the fucking fireworks scene where takumi not only says he's glad they cured eito, but goes on to say that his disorder made it so eito had no free will. which implies he's writing off everything eito said in r0 that wasn't nice to him as the disorder talking. he's deciding to not think rather than actually process anything about the real eito.
like i think i prefer Best Friend to Bittersweet Youth as an ending because like. coming of age takumi isn't coming of age. if anything he's retreating into denial and his preexisting views on people. he doesn't. deserve. a bittersweet ending where he gets the girl and vanquishes the evil with the power of friendship imo. he deserves worse.
