Meri, couple years after Cordelia's birth, how did you feel about your decision to marry Adrian and keep your daughter?
"I am not going to lie. The first year or two of Cordelia's life were hard for me. I think it's hard for any parent. You can take all the classes you want and read all sorts of parenting books, but you will never be fully prepared for parenthood. You will try a variety of techniques to get your baby to sleep through the night and you will worry about every little decision you make. You will freak out the first time they get sick and the first time they get injured. There were nights when getting sleep was impossible for all three of us and some days when I felt like a zombie from exhausting and stress.
However, I still wouldn't change any of that. Even if I could go back in time, I wouldn't change it. If we had waited, there's no telling that our first child was always meant to be Cordelia so I wouldn't want to miss out on meeting her and raising her." Meri smiled brightly. "When I first learned I was pregnant, I was scared about what it meant and how it would change my life. I spent a few days to myself to just think about it and my options. The biggest realization I had was that I already loved them. I remember being out in the woods by my house, pacing around while it was snowing and talking out loud to myself about it and I kept referring to her as 'my baby' already. I never called the baby an it or any other language to remove myself from the equation, she was already mine. So I knew right then and there that I wanted to keep her and raise her."
She looked down at hand and played with the ring on her finger. "I knew Adrian was the one for me months before I got pregnant. We had only been dating less than a year but the love I felt for him had no limits or boundaries. It was overflowing and covered every part of my being. When he told me he wanted to stick by my side and raise our child together, I bawled so hard. I was just so happy that he was on the same page as me. It reassured me that he would stay by whatever decision I made since it was my body, but when I told him I wanted to keep her, the look on his face told me that he already loved this baby just like I did."
Meri gave a small laugh. "I was really surprised when Adrian proposed. We had already gotten a place together and were making plans for the baby. I hoped that marriage would come at some point, but I was so focused on Cordelia that I didn't think it would happen so soon. Agreeing to raise our baby together was already a big sign of our commitment together but this just felt like the ultimate sign, you know? Not only would we be committed to our child as her parents, but now we would be forever bonded to each other. I am incredibly happy to be married to Adrian, the love of my life and to be raising our daughter together."

Julius leaned back, the novel The Serpent’s Bargain resting on his chest. He exhaled - a sound rich with both satisfaction and thoughtful reflection. A slight smile played on his lips, hinting at the complexities he had just navigated. "I love when authors delve deep into moral ambiguity."
He flipped through the pages again - his brow furrowed slightly as if re-examining a crucial piece of evidence - before glancing up at Meri. "Ellarel Vance brilliantly crafted a world where right and wrong aren't so easily defined." Julius paused, tapping the book thoughtfully against his chin.
"The protagonist, a ruler who initially appears benevolent, makes a series of increasingly questionable decisions - all justified by the 'greater good'. But the price is steep. It's a familiar theme, sure, but each writer brings their own nuance." He gestured expansively with his hand.
"After all, our sense of morality is fluid, constantly evolving." He emphasized each word with a slight nod. "We all negotiate, make compromises." Non wielder shifted slightly.
"We tell small white lies, bend the rules here and there - all in the name of progress, or survival, sometimes even just for pleasure or convenience. This book forces you to confront how insidious those choices can be: how quickly the line blurs and how easily we rationalize our way into darkness."
Meri put down her own book and listened to Julius talk. It was fun to hear other people's ideas and opinions. It was refreshing to hear more about why they didn't like something in a book or why they did. It gives her a peek into their character more and the type of person they chose to be.
"I agree. We're forever growing and learning, so are the times around us which can affect those morals. Every situation is going to be different based on the person going through it and the context as a whole." Meri nodded in agreement.
"That sounds like a really good author if they are able to make you see that in their story and make you truly think about it. Even though the main character is a ruler and has to make these choices not just for himself but for his people, it still can make you confront your own choices and consequences of their actions. I might have to give them a try later." Meri was always on the hunt for new books. She especially liked trying the same authors her friends were into because then they could talk about the stories and bond more.

Julius waited until it was dark enough, but not too late for Cordelia, then crept up to the Pöysti family's front porch, armed with a roll of bright pink paper, purple streamers and a handful of glow sticks in different colors. He decorated their small tree with the streaming pink ribbons, weaving in the glowing sticks amongst the branches. It looked, he admitted, like a unicorn had exploded at a rave. But it was undeniably cheerful.
He rang the doorbell and hurried to hide behind a bush. Adrian opened the door and Cordelia peeked out behind his legs. She giggled, pointing at the glowing, pink-draped tree. "It's so pwetty!" she exclaimed, before running to fetch her mother.
"Okay… Is it Lux, Julius, Victor or Xael?" Adrian wondered aloud, sure that the person responsible was one of them and still lurking nearby. "Whoever it is, you can stop hiding now."
Julius emerged from his hiding spot, grinning. "Just thought your family could use a little… illumination." Cordelia arrived with Meri, her hand in her mother's. "Look, Mommy!" the little girl said, gesturing towards the tree.
Adrian raised his brow. "You realize that you're going to have to clean that up, right?" Julius pretended to frown. "Adrian, do you have to be such a buzzkill? Fine, I can ask Lux to clean it up", he said with a smirk. Adrian could already imagine Lux's loud complaints about being saddled with the cleanup as their friend group's youngest member.
"As long as it gets cleaned up, I don't care who does it", Adrian sighed, not in the mood to argue. "Mooooom", Cordelia's lower lip trembled and she looked at Meri with big, pleading eyes. "Can't the tree stay like that?"
"What is it, sweetheart?" Meri laughed as she was dragged outside by her daughter. She gasped softly. "It's beautiful!"
She glanced over at Adrian and Julius, hearing the last bit of their conversation. "Julius, you know the rules in this house. If you make the mess, you have to clean it up." She playfully gave him her mom look. It didn't seem fair for him to drag Lux into this when he had nothing to do with it.
Meri looked down at Cordelia and picked her up, carrying her closer to the tree. "I'm sorry, sweetie. It can't stay like this for long. While these decorations are beautiful, they aren't good for the environment. It might cause the tree some struggles to keep growing like the others." They were now standing under some of the branches so that Cordelia could play with the streamers and glow sticks.
"But this does give me an idea. We could get a small fake house tree and decorate it with fairy lights and streamers. It could stay in your room and you could have that beauty for as long as you'd like. Do you like that idea? If so, you should thank Julius for this beautiful tree and giving us that inspiration."
