Today's translation #617
Newtype 01/2017, Otsuka Manabu interview
Part 1.
-- Please tell us about the circumstances, in which this project started moving?
Otsuka: I first got to know about this project, when I was told about it by the Director, Yamamoto Sayo, when we were working together on a different project. At first, I was very uncertain, if I and the studio have enough power to keep up with Yamamoto Director's TV series, because she always has been known as being very particular about quality. But inspired by the charming characters created by Kubo (Mitsurou)-san that I saw later, and Yamamoto Director insatiable love for figure skating, I decided 'let's try to do it!" and accepted the offer to work on this project.
-- When was it that you started to be sure that this project would be fine?
Otsuka: Maybe it wasn't that I was 'sure', but after we showed the second PV at 'TV Asahi Natsu Matsuri' event, I was able to think that I would trust Yamamoto Director's intuition and just run with what she feels is right. The last cut in that PV was the scene, where Victor puts his finger on Yuuri's lip and the two look at each other. When I saw it for the first time, I thought "[if we are going to show this scene in the PV] won't men not want to watch the show?" and I was considering removing that one scene from the PV. But I've talked about it with female staff members, who thought it would be a shame to not include it and I decided 'Let's [with force] put it in then!". People at the 'TV Asahi Natsu Matsuri' event venue cheered when that scene was shown. In this show, there is a lot of things that my senses did not cover, but at that time, I was able to think that [working on the project] I would realize all those ideas that Yamamoto Director and Kubo-san come up with without fear.
[Notes: It's really interesting how in almost all his interviews, Otsuka mentions this idea that including in an anime what your average otaku perceives as 'fujoshi fan-service scenes' (regardless of the creator's intentions - like, in even in YoI, a huge number of people in Jp fandom still sees those scenes as nothing more but fan-service, because that's the default) will give the anime reputation of pandering to fujoshis, and men (anybody other than fujoshis really) simply won't even consider it worth checking out. Otsuka doesn't even try to hide it here or in his other interviews, and like I've mentioned in the past, the way they were promoting Yurio so much, when Otsuka himself was claiming that thanks to Yurio, men could watch the show and enjoy it, shows, imo, what was the committee's real problem with YoI and why it may seem like they fumbled the bag and failed to capitalize on its potential so much (very little official side content, very few Y&V official arts etc...) - they wanted YoI to not be a 'fujoshi-pandering anime', but 'a serious sport anime for everyone'.]

In case you're looking for a YOI weekend reading that has romance and figure skating, here you go 💙💜
Can You Hear My Heartbeat Chapter 33
The hotpot-and-parking-deck fiasco (II)
Summary:
The second day of the Cup of China puts Viktor to the test as a coach and as a partner...
We're in episode 7, but this time from Viktor's POV.
Something’s not right. His coffee mug cupped with both hands, Viktor leaned against the barrier, trying to shake off the weariness from lying awake until long after midnight while his heart and body had been aching with longing and his mind had been trying to process the ramifications of Yuuri’s performance. That performance! There were no words for what it had done to Viktor. Whatever had prompted Yuuri to finally skate Eros as himself, it had been the perfect seduction and whenever Viktor thought back to these most intense two minutes and fifty seconds of his life so far, he found himself still reeling with the desire to devour this beautiful katsudon as a whole.
The subject of his lewd musings was circling the ice together with Chris, Phichit, that young Chinese skater, Viktor’s former rink mate, and the US skater Leo who all had ended up in the top six. Yuuri had just landed a triple Axel—his favourite jump—with a shaky ankle. Earlier, he had stepped out of the quad toe of the opening jump combination of his free programme. The messy double toe he had added he had landed with one hand on the ice.
“How’s he doing?” a quiet voice asked next to Viktor.
“I’ve never seen Yuuri struggle through that combo,” Viktor replied.

Reblog because I keep up the idealistic that more people will see this then and spread it.
There's a post going around with screenshots from a tweet showing costumes worn by Yuuri and Viktor in the cover art for the Yuri!!! On Ice Select Book. However, the tweet falsely claims they were made for the movie.
So, let's do some debunking!
Here are the reference images from my copy (note the description in the 2nd and 3rd image):

Here's a translation of the costume descriptions in the book. Yes, that's right. They made the costumes exclusively for the book.
This page shows the title of Yuuri and Viktor's programme (Phantom of the Opera).
Tumblr media
The costumes have been designed for two adult characters and all the sketches show Yuuri and Viktor as their adult selves as well, not as teenagers.
That's all the debunking I can offer you because there's really no big secret behind it.
If you don't own a copy of the YOI Select Book, it takes only 5 seconds to find all the necessary information about these costumes on google. For example, the YOI Wiki has a page about it as well.
I'm asking you in all kindness to please be careful what information you spread!
Edit: Added two pictures for clarity. Also thanks to @blonndiec for providing additional information in the comments 🩷
I'm not going to reblog the post because I'm loathe to give misinformation a platform, but I guess that most people have already seen it anyway.

Look me in the eyes and tell me alcohol wouldn't make Victor say literally anything. (No Yuuris were harmed in the shattering of that glass).
Also if you're wondering where Victor's glass went... a wizard did it 🤡

I wish I knew why people make up shit. Is it to stoke other people's rage? Are they even aware what a toxic atmosphere they create? The misinfo about the costumes from the YOI Select Book cover art wasn't the only nonsense I've seen, and I'm sure there is even more I've missed through widely extricating myself from social media for the last week. It's so sad and so exhausting to see these things popping up to keep people being enraged.
I get that people are sad, disappointed, or even angry, but is that really a reason to make up shit and spread misinformation?
What is the end goal? What do they expect to get out of this?
If I debunk every misinformation I come across, I will soon have exhausted myself. But then, I can't just pretend it doesn't exist. I'm keenly aware that misinformation spreads faster and wider than any information that disproves it. I'm keenly aware that I don't have a lot of reach and that I have to rely on people reblogging my posts in order to get seen at all. But if I can enlighten only a handful of people, if I can get at least a handful of people to question any information they come across, to not blindly believe anything just because it appeals to them emotionally, wasn't going through all the effort worth it?
I love YOI with all my heart and seeing people make up stuff about it for their own agenda fucking hurts.

someone not experiencing romantic attraction is not harmful. someone not wanting to be in relationships is not harmful. someone who does not want to have sex with others is not harmful. someone who does not experience sexual attraction but has sex is not harmful. someone who likes to date but doesn't want to cuddle and verbally express love is not harmful. someone who doesn't feel romantic love but enjoys making others happy in relationships is not harmful.
aromantic, asexual and other aspec experiences are not "bad" experiences, they are part of the gradient of ways in which all humans experience our complex social, romantic, familial, queerplatonic, and other relationships. someone is not harming others if they are choosing to engage, or not engage, in activities based around their individual needs in those relationships.
that is healthy, and to be embraced and celebrated, and above all else, we need to have our boundaries respected first and foremost, and not to be made to feel like we should change to benefit others.
