Repost (with color adjustments). I did this painting as a tribute to the strength of the Ukrainian people using the colors of their flag. It’s called “Standing Strong”. The title refers to the birch tree standing alone on the rocky slope but is symbolic to the struggle that Ukraine faces under attack right now. The pale yellow and cadmium yellow are highly saturated and there is inherent light in the blue color of the trees. “Sleeping Forest” 12x12”, mixed media on birch panel. The finishing touches on this were inspired by my favorite excerpt from “Sleeping in the Forest” by Mary Oliver: “I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects, and the birds who do their work in the darkness.” This piece was joyfully created by playing with texture color, and intuitive mark making techniques until patterns in nature began to reveal themselves. Although wildfires occur naturally and play a long-term role in the health of the forest, the dramatic change of wildfire patterns over the decades poise a threat to these ecosystems, life and property. ‘River of Forgotten Sorrows’ 18x36”, mixed media assemblage, is the 3rd of 5 unique collaborative pieces created by found object artist @lynn_dodge_art and painter @karen_haub_art. This artwork is a tribute to the people of the parishes along the Mississippi River, in the corridor between New Orlean’s and Baton Rouge, Louisianna known as Cancer Alley. Over 100 petrochemical plants and refineries in this area have been spewing toxins into the air and water since the early 1980’s. Many of the people in these parishes are dying of cancer as a direct result of proximity to these toxic environments and are too poor to move. Environmental Justice for these people is needed now... there are no plans in place to help the people in the affected parishes by closing down plants or at least regulating more than one chemical at a time. Plans have been made to build more plants in the next few years.
