Steve McQueen, Robert Wagner, Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Jennifer Jones, Fred Astaire, Paul Newman, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Vaughn and OJ Simpson, the cast of The Towering Inferno (1974) lining up and smiling for a publicity still.
Robert Wagner's entry among my best 1,001 movies is Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
"So, you dance on street corners, huh?" 😉 By all rights, these two should have been competitors (and the press often painted them as such), but they simply refused! Instead, they became the best of friends. 🥰 There's one story, in particular, which I think illustrates the depth of their relationship...When Gene's wife died of cancer, he was understandably devastated. One evening, he was sitting alone, when there was a knock at the door. He ignored it, but the knocker persisted. Finally, Gene yelled, "There's nobody home", to which Fred replied, "I know...That's why I came to be with you". 🥺 Fred (who had brought some food), sat quietly with Gene all night. 😭 It turns out, that Gene had done the same for Fred, when his wife died from cancer, years earlier. 😔 These two were both so lovely, and their friendship was just precious. 🥺 Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly, in "Ziegfeld Follies" (1945). 💕
Here are 10 things you should know about Fred Astaire, born 123 years ago today. For our part, we admire Astaire almost as much for his sartorial panache as for his legendary dancing and singing abilities.
