The Newsies and Fashion: The Brooklyn Newsies

Spot

Spot sets the standards for the Brooklyn dress code: short or no sleeves, lots of red, and rock those suspenders. As the leader, he can break these rules a little bit: he occasionally wears non- red shirts, although he keeps his red suspenders. He also has a cane, which may be entirely or decorated as a fashion accessory.

In a modern au, Spot would probably still wear something to show off those arms. If the Brooklyn newsies were a sort of gang, he would probably wear red, as their leader. 

Hotshot

Hotshot also follows the Brooklyn dress code. However, unlike most of the Brooklyn newsies, he wears plaid, not stripes (unless you count his undershirt). Overall, his clothes are fairly neat, although his shirt is unbuttoned.

In a modern au, Hotshot would probably also dress neater than the other Brooklyn newsies. Maybe he would act as an ambassador? He might also be allowed to stray from the dress code slightly.

Myron

Myron is shirtless. Yes, his chest is covered by a sleeveless red undershirt, but by 1899 standards that boy is shirtless. He is, at least, wearing some suspenders. His cap looks stiffer and more fitting than other newsies’, and he has a blue bandanna tied loosely around his neck. Although the blue bandanna was used by queer men to show themselves as tops, a blue bandanna around the neck meant the wearer was a bottom, so its unclear what (if anything) Myron is intending to communicate.

In a modern au, Myron would probably also be showing off his muscle, maybe as an intimidation tactic. The cap and bandanna might also stay, or he might wear things in pride colors.

Bart

Bart is also shirtless. His pants are very high waisted, and although the picture doesn’t show it his cap is either facing backwards or has no bill. His outfit has about equal parts blue and red, but he isn’t quite breaking dress code.

In a modern au, Bart would also dress to intimidate. His high waisted pants might translate into a less currently- fashionable trend, though. He might also not wear red as often as the rest of the gang.

York

York fits the dress code perfectly. In fact, he appears to have torn the sleeves off his shirt himself to adhere better. Unlike the musical version of Kid Blink, he does wear an eyepatch, which could indicate he’s less ashamed of his visual impairment. His shirt is mostly unbuttoned.

In a modern au, York might have to thrift or DIY some or all of his clothes. He would probably also have much less tidy clothes than even his fellow Brooklyn newsies. He might keep a modified eyepatch for the coolness factor.

Graves/ Brooklyn Elmer

Graves, like Myron and Bart, is shirtless as well. His undershirt isn’t even buttoned! However, he does have some very fancy suspenders (maybe he didn’t want to hide them?). All of his clothes have yellow accents, a color usually not seen on Brooklyn newsies.

In a modern au, Graves might also include other colors in his wardrobe. He would also take pride in his accessories, although they might not always be suspenders.
