The mention of studying actually made Adrian scoff. Did she not know who he was ? Of course not... he's new. But he once went an entire year without ever showing up to one of his classes and still got a B in it. Adrian's resourcefulness knew no bounds.
❝ You ? No, I said athletic, ❞ the Moroi replied, before immediately putting a finger to his chin in thought. ❝ Loud. Yeah, I hadn't though of that. Maybe a gorgon would work... ❞
OPEN STARTER.
There was a mixture of confusion plastered on her face, expression twisted as Enid did her best to understand what the was saying—and why they were saying it. Once could probably see the gears of her mind turning; hands moving to pick at the skin of colourful claws.

Adrian was still a new transfer for Nevermore. The only Moroi at the school, but he never let something like that hold him down. It didn’t take long before he made himself the center of attention and a big contender on the popularity scale.
He looked at the blonde, the bubbly personality that he’d been instantly drawn to since his first day, and gave her an easy smile. ❝ You’re looking at this all wrong, Enid. First of all, I’m not dumb enough to break into the headmaster’s office myself. I’m the backer. I let slip to someone that you can easily get in and get the exams answers if you go through the window with the broken latch. I grease the wheel with a little green, make them think they’re taking me for a sucker, but when the answers end up in my hands, it won’t matter. ❞ He paused, thinking a moment, then added, ❝ I’ll get a wolf to do it. You all seem like an athletic lot. ❞

he must have known; that look in his eyes was a big enough hint of it. since when did sydney sage ever avoid a topic of discussion ? if that kiss meant nothing then she should have been able to let it pass through her lips but for some reason she couldn’t let it happen. it was a good kiss - no, it was probably the best kiss she ever had. nothing with brayden ever compared to what happened between them. it was something that came out of those cheesy rom-coms that sydney wasted no time watching. the more she thought about it, the more sydney wanted to do it again. but she couldn’t allow herself to slip up like that again.
sydney held back the urge to roll her eyes once again at his joke. of course he was poking fun at her. ❝ nothing. that thing we did was nothing, ❞ sydney replied, not even wanting to name what that thing was, as her gaze narrowed at the moroi; almost warning him not to push the topic further. ❝ and i only mentioned it because you’re the one who showed up without a text message or anything. ❞
The fact that Sydney, so eloquent with her words, couldn’t even say the word ‘kiss’, brought Adrian immense joy. She could say it was nothing all she wants, but the truth was clear as day in her golden eyes. All the Moroi needed to do was to be patient and wait for her to see it, too. At least, he hoped she would –– -
❝ I thought it would be nice to surprise you, ❞ he explained. ❝ Clearly I was wrong. Next time I’ll text. ❞ Maybe. ❝ I mean, you got to hand it to me, at last I showed up in person this time. I had half a mind to walk in your dreams and see you in that dress again. ❞ Adrian smirked, unable to help himself. Thoughts of them dancing together at the wedding still graced his mind.
as much as sydney wanted to deny it, adrian was right. friends can show up with ice cream to cheer each other up. ( not that sydney had much experience on that front. ) there was also the fact that she could have asked him to leave or not have even let him into her room to begin with. she really wasn’t doing a good job at keeping her distance from him outside of business matters. it was hard to with his charm….good looks…that stupid cologne he wears that she knew was way too expensive. she really needed to snap out of it before she did anything too reckless.
❝ friends can do that but that’s reserved for friends who didn’t - ❞ lips purse as she tries to think of her next words carefully before letting it go. she was not going to get into that discussion again; especially with the two of them alone in her room. for once in her life, sydney wasn’t exactly sure how to respond. ❝ you can stay, i guess. ❞ shrugging it off like it was no big deal before picking her dessert back up again and taking another bite. ❝ but don’t think this changes for a second anything that we talked about on the plane. i’m not changing my mind. ❞
Eyebrows lifted when Sydney didn’t finish her sentence. The fact that she couldn’t talk about the kiss only emboldened Adrian to think it still stirs something within her. He’d give anything to kiss her again, to feel that connection that he knew he didn’t make up. It would be impossible to make up. He’d kissed a lot of girls in his time. A lot of boys, too. But none had made him feel like what he did when his lips met Sydney’s.
❝ Don’t worry, what you said on the plane is locked away up here, ❞ he replied, gesturing to his head. ❝ I won’t forget how much you hate those little bags of peanuts they hand out. ❞ He was such a little shit and he knew it, but he couldn’t help it. Surely she wouldn’t have kissed him back if she didn’t feel it, too. Even on the smallest level. ❝ But let the record state : I opened up conversation about your time with Jackie. You’re the one who turned the topic to –– - What was that thing we did ? ❞
sydney didn’t mean to be so cruel but maybe that was what it was going to take for adrian to get the picture. they would never work together. they couldn’t work together. there were no laws about moroi and humans being together romantically but it was highly taboo. not to mention he was adrian ivashkov; a royal moroi. no matter how attracted she was to him, sydney had to keep adrian at an arm’s length at all times. god knows how much she wanted to closer to him though every inch of her told her not to.
sydney took another small scoop of the dessert and ate it before rolling her eyes. ❝ we are friends, adrian. just friends, ❞ her voice firm as she placed the frozen yogurt back onto her desk; not even trying to be subtle in referencing their discussion they had about his confesion. ❝ and just friends don’t show up to their friends dorm room with ice cream in the middle of the night. you could have just sent a text asking how i was doing but you came here. ❞
Adrian knew exactly what Sydney was trying to not-so-subtly tell him. Yet even as she told him that they were only friends and nothing more, he couldn’t help but notice the way her aura brightened, even if just a tiny amount, when she looked at him. Sure, it might be a trick on his mind, not that the whiskey he was drinking really helped sharpened his abilities, but he refused to believe that she actually wanted him to leave.
❝ Friends absolutely show up with ice cream to cheer each other up. You must have shitty friends, Sage, ❞ he told her. Despite everything Sydney was saying, he made no move to get up, looking as relaxed as ever sitting on her bed. Setting the mug of bourbon aside, Adrian leveled his gaze with her, head tilted to the side with a more serious expression in place. ❝ If you want me to leave, you know that all you have to do is say so. But the fact that you’re only commenting on me being here and not demanding I get going makes me think you want the company. ❞
lips pursed as her eyes narrowed at adrian; taking in that smile that she grew to enjoy. no, she did not like that. what the hell was she talking about… ❝ i guess you should learn to live with it and not show up to my dorm in the middle of the night, ❞ sydney replied though she could feel her cheeks growing warm from his gaze. god was he annoying.
❝ do you have to watch me eat it ? ❞ a small part of her wanted to defy adrian out of spite but instead she reached over and grabbed the frozen yogurt; scooping a small spoonful and taking a bite. she had to admit it tasted pretty good and she already felt a bit better. ❝ now that you’ve delivered the yogurt you really don’t have to stay any longer. ❞ sydney said with raised brows; wondering how long adrian was planning on staying in her room. she had already told him before that she wanted adrian to forget about his feelings for her and him being in her room certainly didn’t look like he was making any effort on that.
-
‘Learn to live with it’, right. As if that was possible. Sydney had no idea how prevalent she was to him, invading his mind and every thought. When he dreamed, it was of golden eyes and golden hair. When he was awake, he longed for the scent of her lavender shampoo. There wasn’t a world that existed in which Adrian could simply learn to live without Sydney, and he was tried of pretending he could.
❝ I’m not ‘watching you eat’. I’m just sitting here with good company. ❞ He took another sip of his drink as he watched her, easing a bit when she took a bite of the food. ❝ You’re kicking me out already ? I thought we were friends now. Friends can’t just hang out together ? I never kick you out when you come over to my place. I’m your guest and you’re my host. You’re supposed to be making me feel welcome, you know. ❞
it was frustrating how adrian could just waltz into her room like he owned the place. first he went through her closet and now he was sitting on her bed. sydney supposed that there was nothing she could really do about it though and she was too tired to put up much of a fight. ❝ imagine what a public school looks like. you might actually faint. ❞ arms folded over her chest as she watched adrian open up the bottle of liquor. couldn’t he have one night without drinking ? though he wasn’t going to get completely plastered, the alcohol still effected jill through their bond.
❝ the lesson was productive but tiring. not sure if we’re going to be practicing again tomorrow night, ❞ sydney replied with a shrug before her eyes glanced over to the frozen yogurt once again. she knew that eating a small amount really wouldn’t do much harm, and god knows she needed it for strength, but she still didn’t move to grab it. ❝ it wasn’t that bad that jill had to send you over though. ❞
-
Adrian took note of the way Sydney stayed still, looking like a stranger in her own room. Though he was sure, she was irritated with him ( in fact, he made sure she was ), he couldn’t help but wonder how much of it also had to do with the food offering. When she mentioned Jill, the Moroi drew in a breath, refocusing his gaze on her. ❝ How did you know she sent me ? What if our time apart was just too unbearable for me ? Any period spent not gazing on your perfect face is like living in a colorless world, Sage. ❞
The grin that spread across his lips gave away of how ridiculous he knew he was being. Then he turned a bit more serious as he gestured to the yogurt, already beginning to melt. ❝ Eat something. It’ll make you feel better, ❞ he told her.
she quickly closed the door behind adrian as he walked in and prayed no one caught a glimpse of him. ❝ how noble of you but i don’t remember asking for any dessert ❞ eyes roll as sydney picked up the frozen yogurt and read the label on the back. it was still filled with way too many calories but maybe she could make an exception considering it was better than regular ice cream.
❝ this a dorm at a regular college not some fancy moroi school, ❞ sydney countered; almost amused at how upset adrian could be over something so frivolous. it’s not like she needed all that much room in the first place. as she opened up her closet and started going through her clothes, sydney walked over and closed the door with a huff. ❝ you being here does not give you permission to go through my things. it’s an invasion of privacy. ❞
-
As the door was snapped shut, Adrian barely blinked. Rather than be embarrassed at doing something wrong, he reveled in the frustrated huff that escaped the blonde. Spinning, he sat down on the foot of her bed and opened the bottle of whiskey. ❝ This is still a private school, though, ❞ he reasoned. ❝ You’re expected to live in this –– - Nevermind. Not relevant. ❞ Reaching over to her night stand, he grabbed the mug that sat there and poured a couple of fingers of whiskey. Knowing Sydney, it was most likely clean, so he wasn’t worried.
After a sip, he fixed his emerald eyes on the Alchemist. She was beautiful, even in her exasperated state. Her aura looked dimmed, though, proving Jill right. She must be exhausted. Whether she was annoyed at him or not, he had a feeling she was glad he showed up.
to say sydney was tired was an understatement. she had severely underestimated how much of a toll witchcraft would have on her body. who knew that it would make her feel like she ran a marathon ? not only that but she had actual schoolwork to keep up with on top of everything. if she wasn’t so adept at the homework it would have made everything that much harder. the only other thing on her mind is adrian’s confession; constantly nagging at her as much as she tried to push it away. why did he have to say anything ? he knew that they couldn’t be together. and yet, sydney couldn’t stop thinking about it.
sitting alone in her dorm, sydney mindlessly scrolled through the articles she was reading before lightly jotting down notes in her notepad. a knock at the door pulled her out of her thoughts and she quickly got off of her bed to answer it. she assumed it was probably jill but when she opened the door to find adrian she stood there shocked. eyes flick down to the frozen yogurt then back up at him before sydney responded. ❝ what are you doing here ? ❞ she hissed; looking around to see if anyone was in the hallway. ❝ …is that gelato ? ❞ her stomach betraying her as she eyed the carton. ❝ come in - quickly. ❞
-
Adrian had been half expecting Sydney to kick him out and tell him to leave before he’s seen, so when she quickly beckoned him in, he grinned and wasted no time in obliging. Once inside, he set the carton down on her desk. ❝ It’s low fat frozen yogurt. I asked the lady at the store what the most boring kind of ice cream is, and that’s what she gave me. ❞ He grinned, looking entirely proud of himself.
The smile faded when he glanced around the room, turning into a look of horror. ❝ My God, Sage. Is this a prison ? My room at Alders was bigger than this. ❞ Green eyes scanned the place, and he found the closet.
Opening it, he gasped, appalled that it was barely big enough to fit a person. ❝ You need to be rescued. Immediately, ❞ he said as his fingers ran along one of her blouses that was hung up.
