Last Friday was a special day. Because the moment I stepped out of the house the rain turned into a thunderstorm, and the moment I stepped under the shelter the rain stopped, so I was so drenched that I had to wear a pair of one-size-too-big flip flops and piakpiakpiak-ed my way to dinner, all while carrying 2 laptops (in life we all have burdensome friends) and 1 additional pair of soaked shoes and socks. And then because I then proceeded for a BBQ dinner where (as you can see) I did not have to do anything except eat and point to the food I wanted to be cooked next. This is not without reason, as too many cooks spoil the broth, and also it takes just one bad cook to spoil everything, and out of consideration and conscience I decided to stay out of the cooking. The food was legit good and we are currently looking for investors for Jiak Heng Heng (hmu if you have any interest or no interest but have spare cash). And of course because we then went on to play Monopoly Deal and watch the aquafamily squabbles while smelling the expensive light-melted Yankee Candle in a cozy little room. My friends were sneaky and surprised me with a RedMart Oreo ice cream cake that tasted legit too (like the Oreo ice cream in BKK), and my hopes of being 22 were dashed as they stuck 3 candles in. I remembered to make a long-ass wish as usual, and managed to bring home the last piece of half-melted ice cream cake and threw it in the freezer before I had to drink it up. 30. While the me few years back would have wanted to mourn over my birthday because each one after 22 signifies my growing old (🙄 what have we been taught and conditioned about age), I now no longer do so. Of course, I still wish I was young and could be young forever, and I'd still get a little sad with being labelled "old" (hey we all grow old ya, if we're fortunate enough), but my refusal to accept that I'm growing older does not make me any younger. As with life, the process of aging does not stop nor rewind, and any time spent feeling sad about it is not only a waste of the limited and precious time we have, but also an insult to life and the many others that don't get to experience it. Instead of fighting and resisting, we can choose to continuously embrace, not just because we have to, but also because we're blessed and privileged enough to live through each birthday, and hopefully continue doing so for many more future ones until our very last breath. Afterall, who knows how many birthdays we get to live through at all? If every day and moment is a blessing and privilege, there's really no reason why each birthday isn't, in fact, more so and worthy of celebration. I thought I'd gotten it right when I told myself age is just a number. But truth is, age is not just a number. Age matters, age has implications, age tells stories, and age has meaning. But most importantly, the process of ageing is a blessing and privilege that I hope I get to experience for many years to come ahead. 哗啦哗啦 Joy, health, wishes. CNY has always meant a lot to me because it always means I get to see my cuzzies who grew up with me, and were a big and important part of my life. Many times, many more times than I'd have liked, I have allowed my mind and my emotions to take away my breath and my presence, and to make my body work harder than it really should. When the mind is congested and all over the place and when feelings are threatening to burst at the seams, it can make something as natural as breathing - so natural we barely spare a thought about it - become a challenge. But sometimes, just sometimes, when things are so overwhelming even breathing is so difficult, it takes just my eyes closed and hands on my chest to remember that the little thing beating on its own right there underneath - with the cooperation of all the little and big things my body holds - is truly a miracle of life and a blessing from the universe; I have everything I possibly need to be alive, and what a privilege it is.
