Learn about Philosophy
Hello, this post is for those of you who want to become good at philosophy.
We are a group of avid philosophy readers and organize weekly, in depth readings. No prior knowledge is required. We proceed slowly, just a few pages per week. Meetings are weekly and last 60-90 minutes each.
Current groups include: Plato's Timaeus, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Metaphysics (upcoming discussions include Avicenna, and Aztec Metaphysics) and History of Science (currently looking at Galileo's writings). We also have a weekly film discussion: future films include Waking Life, Tokyo Story, Godfather II, Viridiana.
Organizers include yours truly (PhD Oxford, 2014), Constantine (studied classics in the UK), Andrew (German tutor in NYC) and others.
This project started a year and a half ago and it's entirely free to participate. You can join us here

Flexible online schooling for HS diploma
A few years ago I regretfully dropped out of high school at grade 11. Im 22 now and want to at least get my HS diploma/equivalent to start with. I work full time with a consistent schedule. Is there any good flexible online schools that I can choose from? If it matters I’m in Canada.

New hire training issues
Hello, I am not sure if this is the proper forum for my question, but I am looking for information on adult education.
I recently started training new employees at the company I work for, and the approach to training just seem right to me. We are told if they ask a question that is beyond the scope of the current lesson, not to answer, because it is "going to confuse or overwhelm them" including setting up email on their phone or explaining how a very popular employee perk works.
We are told that we don't teach them policy, basically only how to do their job in the computer system. Anything they need to know use the internal information database (which is not always clear or easy to read, and sometimes does not even take you to the proper page for what you searched for) or to call a supervisor (but there is also a company policy about calling support less often and being self sufficient that mgmt emails about at least once a week) for help. They actively advise the new hires not to learn because policy chances.
But to me it seems like a disservice and an insult not to answer the trainees' questions, at least a basic explanation with "we'll go over it in more detail later, but the simple answer for now is......" Not teaching puts them with customers with little knowledge of policies that should be common knowledge.
We have a 50% retention rate by 6 months for a job with decent pay, and really awesome benefits! I almost quit because of these and I have seen many become dejected and disenchanted and quit for the same reasons. Not learning makes even less sense, Science, History, medicine, psychology, education and law can and change what is "known" but they still learn.
But change isn't always popular, and I'm new to the training program, but have been a trainer for 1/2 my life and an avid learner even longer. When I usually have a question like this, I usually like to find academic resources to see what the correct approach is, but I have not have much luck with my search terms to this point.
If you are a PhD in adult education, and could point me in the direction, I would greatly appreciate it!

GED vs Goodwill excell center: 18 yo dropout due to home situation
My sister is 18 and is planning on moving in with me. She's very behind in school due to multiple factors and is planning to just drop out and get her GED. Our parents are horrible and I've wanted to figure out a way to get her out of there for over 2 years. I'm planning on moving to a different town at the end of september, so her transfering schools and finishing the 1.5 years she has left isn't going to work. I suggested she get her ged and I can help her learn how to do the adult things so that when I move she's ready to be on her own. My wife suggested she take advantage of the goodwill excell center for getting her high school diploma. Does it even really matter? Is there actually an advantage to a diploma vs a GED? She's probably going to take classes at community college to figure out what she wants to do, but i dont see her getting a bachelor's degree or anything.
TLDR: My 18yo sister is dripping out of high school to get out of a bad home situation. Is there any real benefit to getting her diploma like at the goodwill excell center or is a GED fine? Benefits? Downsides?
Thanks!

Uneducated 21 year old
I'm not even sure if this is the right place to ask this considering I've never actually posted on reddit before, but as I'm too anxious to ask my family for guidance at the moment, I'm saying it here. I'm currently 21 years old and I was homeschooled from the 3rd grade, however it would be more accurate to say I dropped out completely. I'd like to ask if theres anything I could do in my situation to get back into learning so I can get a highschool diploma or something. (Especially if theres any ideas of what I could do that is special-needs friendly it would be much appreciated ;'0 ) I genuinely just dont know where to start.

Don’t want to quit my working life. Online master degree?
Before the pandemic, i applied to study for a Masters degree (campus based)..COVID, lockdowns and restrictions happened which made me pull back and decide not to go ahead with my enrolment since i’ll have to relocate to a whole different continent and I had some fears due to the pandemic.
I am now thinking of pursuing my masters again, but honestly, i am definitely not ready to leave my professional working life. The same university offers distance learning.
Im motivated but I have some doubts. Im not sure if the online masters degree will have the same value or weight as the on campus degree? will i be able to juggle my full time job with the classes?
I need some advice. Is it a good idea to pursue an online masters degree?

Recruiting Participants for a Study Exploring the Identities and Experiences of Students with ADHD at UK Universities.
Hi everyone!
As part of a research project I am currently working on, I am running a study to explore the identities and experiences of students with ADHD in higher education.
After a short survey, you will participate in an online discussion group (hosted on Discord) with around 10-15 other students with ADHD. The discussion will be open for 2 weeks, so you can send messages and contribute whenever you are able to.
If you take part, we hope to project your voice, applying what we have learnt from you to better educate universities on how they can be a more inclusive place for students with ADHD.
If you are interested, please click on the link! https://keelepsych.co1.qualtrics.com/.../SV_3lnDq5OL8JgRdMa
Thank you! :)

Going back to school/studying technology?
I am a nearly 40 years old, with a family and school aged kids a d looking to go back to school. I have a bachelor’s of arts, and am looking to change fields and get into the tech industry. I am looking at various schools trying to decide how to go about it, and I have a few questions: 1) Since I already have a BA, would it make sense to go back to school to get a BS? 2) Is there an advantage to getting a certificate over a degree? 3) In the long term, how does a studying computer science and IT differ? What is the difference in jobs available?

Two questions about masters/certificate programs and getting into the adult education field
I'm interested in going back to school to become a learning professional. I hold an undergraduate degree in an area unrelated to education and do not have a background as a teacher. I'm not entirely clear what specialty I'm interested in yet, such as e-learning or corporate training. I do know I want to focus on training adults, and not necessarily in academia. I love learning about learning and I think this industry could be a good fit.
I've been doing a good bit of research and it's a bit overwhelming to see all the different nomenclature used by universities to title their master's degrees.
Question: Are these degrees generally the same thing?
Here's some examples:
Training and Development
Instructional Design
Learning and Development
Education (example focuses in Curriculum and Instruction, Adult Education and Human Resource Development)
Adult Learning and Workforce Education
Question: Is a master's degree necessary or could I look for a certificate program instead, such as in training and development?
Thanks!
