the boys are back
I remember being 11 years old and watching Camp Rock for the first time and my sisters and I were obsessed with the Jonas Brothers. Joe Jonas played the main lead of CP, Shane Gray. When he and Demi Lovato, who played Mitchie on CR, sang This Is Me/Gotta Find You at the final stage together, I’m pretty sure I was in awe. Now being able to hear Joe Jonas sing Gotta Find You and Play My Music from CR live at a Jonas Brothers concert in 2019, 11-year-old me is probably screaming in joy.Â
If you live under a rock or wasn’t the age of 10-18 back in the 2000s and don’t know who the Jonas Brothers are - they are a band comprised of three brothers. And they just came back together after a 6-year spilt with a fresh new album, documentary, and now world tour.Â
Kevin - the oldest, lead guitaristÂ
Joe - lead vocal
Nick - youngest of the 3, vocals, guitaristÂ
They were the essential teen pop Disney Channel stars. They blew up with Year 3000 and made hits like Burning Up, S.O.S, and Love Bug. They were active for a good 8 years before taking a hiatus which ended up splitting the band in 2013.Â
Now it’s 2019 and the Jonas Brothers announced they were coming back together, with a new album, documentary, and tour. And that comes to the main point of this blog post - their documentary Chasing Happiness.Â
This documentary is basically the behind the scenes and the timeline of the Jonas Brothers' career and how they decided to come back together as a band and also how they decided to split up after 8 years.Â
The documentary mainly felt like a tribute to their fans and the Jonas mania back in the 2000’s. It showed tidbits that fans would appreciate like when Kevin asked a girl out to his show, who happened to be his wife in the future, the story behind Love Bug (it was about Miley Cyrus, who Nick dated in the past), and how the brothers found happiness in the end.Â
With all this happiness, there was definitely some sad and shocking moments in the film, such as when Nick got really sick when he was young and he was actually diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 13.Â
A big topic regarding the documentary was whether or not they would address who initiated the splitting of the band. The brothers did a round table of talking and address the break up issue and we found out that Nick intimated the break up. It was on the topic of just growing up from their Disney Channel phase and growing as a musician and how there was just a lot of tension between the brothers and they need time apart.Â
The documentary ends on a sweet and happy note. Kevin got married to his teenage sweetheart Danielle, and they now have two daughters. Nick and Joe both found significant others and got married to Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner respectively. And now, they are working on their most recent album Happiness Begins and would end up going on a huge tour for this new album.Â
The documentary is definitely catered to fans and it’s filled with old behind the scenes footage from their young days as a band. It was very nostalgic for me to watch. I wasn’t a massive fan when I was young but I did like and enjoy their music and to see them live in person now just puts a different image in my head of them.Â
I think anyone can really watch and appreciate the film as a story and the journey the brothers went through together.Â
This Mashable article brings the perspective of a non-fan that became a fan when they came back in 2019. The author, Proma Khosla, brought a good insight to what the documentary was and she said it was like a “crash course for a new fan” which I completely agree with. She also brings up a good point that the documentary really shows how much effort the Jonas family put into trying to make it big for Kevin, Joe, and Nick.Â
