"Why can't a singer who sold 80K albums appear on music programs?"

Jay Park has continuously said he will promote this album longer and with his best efforts in recent interviews. He says “yes” if anyone invites him. But something is fishy. It’s been four weeks since the album came out, but we have only seen him twice on music programs of national broadcasting channels.
Last week, Jay Park won 1st place on Music Bank with good scores in digital and album sales.
(image)
7116 points from weekly album sales of 70 000 out of total 85 000 copies sold. 3666 points from digital (online downloads + mobile + streaming).
He has good scores from digital and album sales, and the singer himself wants broadcast appearance, but he has not been able to show his face on programs other than KBS’ Music Bank.
(image)
When Jay Park was finally able to appear on Music Bank after getting his comeback stage delayed one week, an ambiguous tweet came up on the feed, saying “(he) won’t give up”. Meaning that scheduling broadcast appearences is still not silky smooth.
As if to back this up, Jay Park was nowhere to be seen on SBS Inkigayo’s Take 7 nominees. Although his first and second week album sales were outstanding, another singer replaced him on number 1 album sales.
The situation is not any better on MBC Music Central.
Same with the cable show on Mnet.
(image)
Though he had been scheduled for Mnet unexpectedly the night before… (at around 8:00pm).. He was not on the list of singers to appear on the show, despite him being a strong nominee for 1st place. (He did not have any other schedules on this day.)
Of course, Jay Park’s promotion for his mini album last year was not very active. He was able to appear on all three national broadcast channels, but he had only appeared 6 times on MBC and the pre-planned promotions for a second track did not happen.
(image)
His tweets to comfort the fans who were upset about such a short promotion:
“give it a year lol.. just sayin shit~ for all those who do support me, I WONT LET YOU DOWN. LOVE YALL”
“lot of ppl who don’t want to give me a chance who don’t wanna help me out but sall good still got love for y’all, but we’ll see baby”
At this point, one cannot have anything but doubts. What, for what reason, is preventing Jay Park from appearing on music programs? To answer this, we must follow the facts that have been laid out since September 2010.
On September 18th, 2010, Jay Park, who was in America at the time had to quickly return to Korea, as he had suddenly been scheduled to sing at Nanum concert, and for the first time in a year, he stepped on stage with make-up, hair and costume intended for broadcast. Six back-up dancers, who weren’t even present at fanmeetings, were provided. It was obvious that all this was set-up for a broadcast appearence.
(image)
However, there was a big conflict between agencies until Jay was allow to go up on the stage, and stories of him almost not being able to perform, let alone be broadcast, were heard on various forums. According to these, there were conflicts between companies who could not allow Jay Park to perform vs. those that could. There were also stories that said CEO Hong of Cube Ent stepped in between and compromised with these companies so Jay could perform but not be broadcast. Stories that said, when he asked Jay if he wanted to go on stage, he said he would because the fans are waiting.
(image)
Before Jay stepped on the stage, Korean and international fans trended JayinHD in order to congratulate his first broadcast appearence,
(image)
“JayinHD son ugh, but not really lol thank yall thought <3”
and a few hours before his performance, Jay tweet as such. The fans’ reactions were divided, and more than half agreed that it’s normal for him to not appear on TV since he hadn’t started any promotions. Many people explained what happened that day in detail, but most were unwilling to believe and denied the truth by labelling it as a rumour. Also, Jay’s tweets did not seem to show any signs of problems.
“I did so bad but it was still fun ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ daebak! U guys are real hahah”
“Surfer hair ㅋㅋㅋ surfers love my hair hahahah thank y’all so much”
(twitpic)
However, the stories, which circulated before the conference, that we believed to be conspiracy theories started to prove themselves as true.
The insider story from the Nanum concert was published in SisaIN magazine. It was given as an example in a story about the unity of companies and their fight for power (http://poisontongue.sisain.co.kr/1752)
The interesting thing is that it was CEO Hong of Cube Ent who helped with Jay Park’s comeback. Hong has a history of once have been the representative of JYPE and has now left Park Jin-Young. Last year at Dream (Nanum) concert, JYP had put a restraint on Jay Park’s performance, but Hong apparently stepped in between them. An affiliated staff of the concert revealed, “There was a serious conflict between the cast members of the concert who were divided: boycott against Jay Park vs. for Jay Park. CEO Hong stood on Jay Park’s side.”
However, as yesterday’s ally becomes today’s enemy (Korean proverb), yesterday’s enemy also becomes today’s ally. Cube Entertainment, in which Hong is affiliated with, has agreed recently to join the KMP Holdings which includes JYP as its member. (omit)
This game is not simple. A lot of the times, these companies prefer the profit in front of their eyes, rather than a collaborative profit. In the case of Kim, representative of Core Contents, had criticized Kara members who had broke away, had appointed Jay Park, who had been discharged from JYP, for the lead role of his idol group’s m/v (5dolls) and have worked with JYJ (omit).
The reason why Sidus is powerless compared to JYP in the music industry:
There are two opposing parties surrounding the ex-member of @pm, Jay Park. CEO Jung who recruited Jay Park was “yesterday’s ally” of JYP’s chief. Originally, Jung and Park (jyp) had produced together the albums of g.o.d. (one of 1st gen idol groups along with H.O.T., SES, etc). Out of the five members of g.o.d., some were signed with JYP and the other, with Sidus. For years, the two raised this group to national idols. But in the end, they turned their backs on each other and became arch rivals. And when Sidus recruited Jay Park, the two stepped into the path of no return.
A question arises here. What are the reasons that Jay Park’s broadcast activities are restrained, although he has signed with Korea’s biggest agency, SidusHQ? This is because Sidus specializes in actors. These management companies exert a great influence in the film/drama industry, but they have almost no power in the music market. Since the agencies of these two areas have a completely different system, it is hard (for Sidus) to exert power.
First of all, the influence of actor-specializing agencies and singer management companies differs greatly. This is because there is a difference in the relationship between the company and its affiliated stars. In music companies that possess idol groups, the company has absolute power, but as actor-specific agencies deal with mostly adults, most of the power is in the hands of the actors. Ultimately, it is easy for these idol companies to show “collective power” by boycotting against broadcast channels, but this is very hard in actor companies where each actor is a representative of himself.
The reason why certain agencies stood on JYP’s side and boycotted against Jay Park’s appearance on Nanum:
There is one rule that they must abide by in order to protect the mutual profit of “prevention of member secessions.” They must not accept members that have been expelled from other companies. They see it as a way to prevent chaos that may arise from trying to fulfil the present greed. Instead, they keep the mutual profit by bullying such members.
These were facts we didn’t know because Jay Park was a man who never blamed others, pessimistic, , felt it was unfair or showed his disappointment. This was why we did not want to believe.
(image)
In the end, his performance at Nanum concert was never aired, and there was a strife on twitter. Fans had begun to protest to MBC.
To this, Jay comforted the fans through twitter. He, again, did not blame others or expressed his frustration toward the injustice. He just tweeted jokingly, telling us to calm down, and that was that.
“Jay is ALL GOOD so dont yall worry, yall doin good baby? yall doin good?”
And Sidus, who had no other ways to deal with the situation, chose to write an apology in exchange for his broadcast appearance.
(image: Notice from MSY (Korean Industry of Mass Fine Arts Association) - JYP agrees to lift their restraint on Jay Park, a few days after the apology).
Excerpts from various articles related to the issue:
JYP lifted their restraint on Jay Park’s broadcast activities, with the release of his apology. JYP contacted MSY and pleaded for the restraints to be lifted. (omit) To this, MSY sent notices to the three national broadcast channels and their associates to allow Jay Park’s broadcast activities. In the official notice, MSY wrote, “It was a chance for us to confirm the improved maturity of Jay Park, who admitted his hard-to-tell mistake of the past, and we have decided he is ready to show a better side of him to the fans for the better of the industry of mass public fine arts. This is not only the decision of MSY, but also of JYP, the old management company of Jay Park.” They added, “We hope that he will flourish again and that this will help him with his future broadcast activities.”

(omit) However, this was an extreme proof of the horrible myths which claimed one’s career was over once they were blacklisted by a major company. Is there truly no way to stop the dictatorship of these big companies?

(omit) Looking at this in the other way, this proves that JYP has been indeed blocking Jay Park’s activities. It can also be translated into how deep of a relationship the broadcast companies and the idol companies are in.

There is no reason why Jay or JYJ should not appear on TV. Actually, there are a must-need icon for these TV shows to get attention. But the reason why they still cannot appear on TV is, according to PDs, because of the connections between major companies and broadcasting channels.

To JYP, Jay Park’s comeback was highly unpleasant. This also affected the status of Jay Park on a drama’s casting list. (note: he was supposed to play a role on Secret Garden with Jang Hyuk).
MSY and JYP had promised to let him be when he apologized… They promised to lift all restraints against him and do not make an issue out of Jay Park’s broadcast appearence.
But… was it all just formalities? It seemed they’d go their own ways after this incident, but the restraints on his broadcast activities became stronger than ever and as discussed above, Jay Park’s career in this area is still not easy.
@dogsul’s tweet on February 26th, 2012:
Is plagiarist JYP still cockblocking Jay Park???
(omit)
What crime did he commit to deserve this silent treatment? I cannot imagine how depressing it must be for a singer to not be able to sing on stage… But they do not even give him a chance. The promises of his freedom are nowhere to be seen. They act as if those notices were never published.
They are preventing him from appearing in front of the mass public at the most important time of his career, and due to this “hiatus”, he is becoming further apart from the public.
He did not want to leave the group; this is Jay Park, who was cruelly betrayed with the groundless rumours that were created under the name of their justification. If they threw him away because they couldn’t be together, then that’s that.
Then what were all the promises at the conference, of supporting Jay Park however he lives, and it does not matter to JYP even if he promotes in Korea again.
How can the people who were once almost his family act in such a way to a young artist… It is scary because we don’t know when this will end.
All the people who sing and dance must be able to perform on stage. A stage where, not only the priviledged singers from major companies can stand on, but open to anyone justifiably… We wish that they will respect the public’s rights to listen to good music and enjoy the performances of anyone we like, anytime.
