What Does Dinner Etiquette Look Like?
Attending a formal dinner is an exciting experience. Whether it’s a wedding reception, business event, or charity fundraiser, it’s a chance to dress up and enjoy a night of glamour and sophistication. However, attending such an event can also be daunting, particularly when you are unsure of the proper etiquette. With the event’s elegance and the dress code’s formality, it’s natural to feel a little nervous about getting everything right.
But do not worry; with a bit of preparation and an understanding of the etiquette involved, you can easily navigate the social event. To make sure you make the most of your experience, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you feel confident and comfortable at any formal dinner occasion.
RSVP
When you receive an invitation to a formal dinner, it’s essential to RSVP promptly. It would be best if you let the host know whether or not you will be able to attend so that they can make the necessary preparations, including seating arrangements and catering. Respond within the timeframe provided in the invitation, and do not forget to express your gratitude for the invitation. If you can’t attend, let the host know and apologise for the inconvenience.
Dress code
One of the most important things to consider when attending a formal dinner is the dress code. The dress code is usually specified on the invitation, and it’s crucial to adhere to it. For example, if the dress code is black tie, wear a tuxedo for men or a long evening gown for women. Opt for a formal suit or dress if the invitation specifies business attire.
Arriving at the event
Arrive at the event on time or by fifteen minutes after the start. It is considered impolite to keep the other guests and the host waiting. Upon arriving, introduce yourself to the host, thank them for inviting you, and compliment them on their beautiful home or event venue.
Gift for the host
If you have been invited to a formal dinner, bringing a host or hostess gift is customary. A bottle of wine or a small bouquet are traditional gifts, but anything thoughtful and appropriate for the occasion will suffice. When presenting the gift, it is best to do so at the beginning of the evening rather than at the end.
Table seating
Take note of the place cards and find your designated seat. The host or hostess will guide you to your seat if there is no place card. When you sit down, place your napkin on your lap, and never use it to wipe your face. You should use the napkin to wipe your mouth or fingers only. In a formal dinner, the hostess or host will indicate when it is time to start eating by placing their napkin on their lap or instructing everyone to begin. It’s important to wait until everyone has been served before starting your meal.
Napkin Etiquette
Napkins are an essential part of a formal table setting. Once seated, place the napkin on your lap, unfold, and never tuck it into your shirt collar. If you need to leave the table during the meal, place the napkin on your chair. When finished with the meal, place the napkin to the left of your plate, neatly folded.
Proper use of utensils
When it comes to formal dining, an array of utensils is often placed on the table. It can be confusing to know which one to use for each course. Generally, start with the silverware on the outside and work your way in as the meal progresses. For example, start with the soup spoon on the outside, then move to the fish fork, and then to the meat knife and fork.
Do not use your hands to eat, and avoid blowing on hot food or slurping soup. Chew with your mouth closed and avoid speaking with food in your mouth. It is also important to keep your elbows off the table and to use the cutlery provided rather than your hands.
The knife should always be placed on the right-hand side of the plate with the fork on the left. Hold utensils correctly, with your wrist slightly bent and your fingers wrapped around the handle. Also, never lick or suck on your utensils. Instead, wipe your mouth with your napkin before reaching for your glass or utensils.
To indicate that you have finished your meal, place your fork and knife on the right-hand side of your plate, diagonally, with the tines of the fork facing up. This act signals the server that they can remove your plate.
Handling glassware
You may be served different glasses for different beverages during a formal dinner. Always hold a glass by the stem or base, never the bowl, to avoid warming the drink. Wine glasses should be filled at most a third full to allow room for the aroma to develop. Remember to sip, not slurp your drink, and always say “excuse me” if you need to leave the table to use the restroom.
Bread and butter
Bread and rolls are often served during a formal dinner, but there are proper ways to eat them. First, always tear off small pieces of bread, butter them one at a time, and then eat them. Never cut the bread with a knife, and do not butter the entire piece at once. If there is a bread plate, place the bread or roll on it instead of directly on the table. When you have finished the bread, place your used butter knife on the bread plate, never on the table or your dinner plate.
Toasting
At a formal dinner, it’s common to make toasts. The host may welcome their guests and thank them for attending. If you are a guest, wait for the host to make the first toast, then respond accordingly. Raise your glass, make eye contact, and clink your glasses gently. It’s important to keep your toasts short and sweet.
Conversation dinner etiquette
During a formal dinner, conversations are expected to be polite and engaging. Avoid talking with your mouth full, and never interrupt someone else who is speaking. Instead, wait for a pause in the conversation to share your thoughts.
Do not discuss controversial topics such as politics, religion, or any other sensitive subject that could discomfort your fellow guests. Avoid talking about your problems or complaining about your life. Instead, try to initiate conversations about current events, travel, hobbies, or interests that you may have in common. Listen actively to what others say, show genuine interest in their stories and avoid using slang or profanity.
Thank you notes
Sending a thank you note after attending a formal dinner is a polite gesture that shows appreciation for the event and the host. Make sure to send the note within a few days of the event and express your gratitude for the invitation, the food, and the company. It’s also a good idea to mention something specific that you enjoyed about the event, such as the entertainment or the décor.
Formal dinner etiquette is essential in any situation that calls for it, be it a business dinner, a social event, or a family gathering. Remembering the proper manners and protocols will help you make a good impression on your fellow diners and create a comfortable atmosphere for everyone. In addition, by following the tips mentioned above, you can ensure you will handle the situation confidently, gracefully, and elegantly.[/vc_column_text]

10 Ways to Keep the Romance Alive in Your Relationship
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px”][vc_column_text]As a relationship coach, I often see couples who have lost the spark in their relationship. It’s common for both partners to feel like the other should put more effort into romance. However, the truth is that both partners must try to keep the romance alive.
At the beginning of a relationship, it’s easy to be romantic. You go on exciting dates, dress up, and have passionate sex. However, over time, it’s natural for the excitement to fade. But that doesn’t mean the romance has to disappear completely. In this article, I will share ten ways to show off your romantic side and keep the spark alive in your relationship.
Surprise phone call
In today’s digital age, relying on text messages and emails to communicate with your partner is easy. But there’s something special about hearing your partner’s voice on the phone. So take the initiative to call your partner during the workday and tell them you’re thinking of them. If you’re feeling confident, you can even engage in some playful phone sex to build anticipation for when you see each other later.
Tantalising underwear
While it’s common for women to wear sexy lingerie for their partners, men enjoy it just as much. So surprise your partner by wearing your best lingerie and pairing it with fishnet stockings and stilettos. You will show your partner that you desire them and want your relationship to be passionate.
A romantic meal
The saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” is true for a reason. The same can be said, no matter your gender. Cooking a romantic meal for your partner is a great way to show them you care. Set the table with candles and soft music, and serve their favourite meal. Not only will this be a romantic gesture, but it could also lead to a night of passion.
Flirt
Flirting is a fun and playful way to show your partner that you desire them. Try flirting with your partner in public by whispering in their ear, making eye contact, or touching them subtly. It will boost both of your egos and bring back feelings of lust.
Bedroom mood
Creating a romantic atmosphere in your bedroom is a great way to reignite the passion in your relationship. Clear out all the clutter, change the bed linens to luxurious silk sheets, and fill the room with scented candles. Add some champagne on ice and some chocolates to set the mood.
Bedroom props
If you want to add excitement to your love life, try introducing some props into the bedroom. It could be as simple as a silk scarf or as daring as a vibrator. The key is communicating with your partner and ensuring you’re both comfortable with the props you choose.
Movie night
A romantic movie night is a great way to spend quality time together. Order takeout, and snuggle up on the couch with a bottle of your favourite beverage to create an intimate setting.
Love notes
Little gestures can go a long way in keeping the romance alive. Leave little love notes for your partner in unexpected places such as their pocket, pillow, or car. It will show your partner that you are thinking of them and appreciate them.
Kisses all over
Kissing is one of the most romantic and intimate things you can do with your partner. It’s not just about a quick peck on the lips but exploring each other’s bodies with your lips and tongue. Start with gentle kisses on the neck, ears, and lips, and slowly work your way down their body, savouring each moment. Then, use your hands to explore their body and watch their reactions. The more you connect with your partner through kissing, the more romantic and intimate your relationship will become.
Three little words
Telling your partner that you love them is one of the most romantic things you can do, and it’s something that you should do every day. Even if you’re busy or stressed, saying “I love you” can make all the difference in your relationship. You can say it in person, through a text message, or even in a note or card. Let your partner know how much they mean to you and that you appreciate all they do for you. When you express your love in this way, you create a strong bond of intimacy and connection that can withstand any challenge.
A surprise date
One of the best ways to be romantic is to plan a surprise date for your partner. It could be as simple as a picnic in the park or as elaborate as a weekend getaway to a romantic destination. Think about what your partner enjoys and plan something that will make them feel loved and appreciated. Remember to keep it a secret until the big reveal.
PDA
While some people may feel uncomfortable with public displays of affection, for others, it can be a great way to show your partner how much you care. Hold hands, kiss, or cuddle while out and about. It doesn’t have to be over-the-top, but a small display of affection can make your partner feel special and loved.
Self-care
While showing your partner love and affection is essential, taking care of yourself is also vital. This means taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. Make time for self-care activities that make you feel good, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with friends. When you feel good about yourself, you’ll be more confident in your relationship and able to show your partner love and affection.
Listen
Communication is one of the most important aspects of any relationship, and a big part of communication is listening. Try to listen to your partner when they’re talking to you. Ask questions, show empathy, and be present at the moment. When your partner feels heard and understood, they’ll feel more loved and valued.
Surprise gifts
Surprise your partner with small gifts from time to time. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive, but something that shows you were thinking of them, such as their favourite snack or a new book by their favourite author. The thought counts, and the surprise will make your partner feel loved and appreciated.
Take a dance class together
Taking a dance class together is a great way to add romance and intimacy to your relationship. It doesn’t matter if you’re a great dancer; the point is to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Dancing is also a great way to connect with your partner physically and emotionally.
Cook together
Cooking together can be a fun and romantic activity. Pick a new recipe, and enjoy creating a delicious meal together. Cooking together can also be a great way to bond and connect with your partner.
Say thank you
Make an effort to say thank you to your partner for the things they do for you. Whether it’s making dinner, doing the laundry, or simply being there for you when you need them, let them know you appreciate them. A simple thank you can go a long way in making your partner feel loved and valued.
Take a romantic walk
Walk together in a scenic location like a park, beach, or forest. Hold hands, talk, and enjoy each other’s company. Taking a walk together is a great way to connect with your partner and get some fresh air and exercise at the same time.
Be spontaneous
Finally, don’t be afraid to be spontaneous and try new things in your relationship. Surprise your partner with an impromptu weekend getaway, try a new restaurant, or take up a new hobby together. Being spontaneous can add excitement and passion to your relationship and keep things fresh and exciting.
Romance is essential to any healthy relationship, and it’s up to both partners to keep the flame burning. By following these ten tips, you can reignite the passion and intimacy in your relationship and create a deeper connection with your partner. Remember, romance isn’t just about grand gestures and expensive gifts – it’s about the small things you do daily to show your partner how much you care. So don’t wait for the other person to make the first move – take the lead and show off your romantic side today![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px”][vc_column_text]Image: Uncanny Valley, Adobe Stock[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

How To Move Past Your Dating Regrets
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px”][vc_column_text]Dating can be a tumultuous journey, fraught with many highs and lows. Throughout our romantic escapades, we all have made choices that we might later regret. Whether pursuing a toxic relationship or not speaking up about our true feelings, our missteps in our dating lives can leave us feeling disheartened and frustrated. It’s important to take a step back, reflect on our past mistakes, and use them as lessons to guide us towards more fulfilling relationships in the future. By heeding these insights, you can save yourself from unnecessary heartache and pave the way for a more successful and fulfilling dating life. So, take a deep breath and explore some of the most common dating regrets and how to avoid them.
Lost loves
One common regret in dating is not settling down with their first love. It’s easy to think that there is plenty of fish in the sea and that you’ll find someone who’s even better suited to you, but the truth is that your first love is unique. There will never be another person exactly like them, which can be hard to accept.
So what can you do if you’re still hung up on your first love? The first step is to accept that they’re not coming back. Whether they’ve moved on or you’ve both grown apart, the reality is that you’re not meant to be together right now. Once you’ve accepted that, it’s time to focus on moving forward.
The key to moving on is to focus on the things that make you happy. Whether spending time with friends and family, pursuing a new hobby or career, or just taking some time for yourself, finding things that bring you joy is important. This will help you to build a life that you’re happy with, even if your first love isn’t a part of it.
Playing away
Infidelity is one of the most destructive things that can happen in a relationship. It’s a betrayal of trust that can be difficult to overcome and that many people regret. So why do people cheat? There are many reasons why someone might cheat, from feeling neglected or unappreciated in their relationship to just wanting to experience something new. But the truth is that cheating is never the answer. Instead, if you’re unhappy in your relationship, the best thing to do is to talk to your partner about it. Communication is critical in any relationship, and being honest about your feelings is essential.
If you’ve been cheated on, knowing how to move forward can be difficult. First, remember that you didn’t do anything wrong. Infidelity is a choice the other person made, and it’s not a reflection of your worth or value. Give yourself time to heal. Don’t rush or force yourself to move on before you’re ready.
Missed opportunities
Another common dating regret is missing out on an opportunity with someone you were interested in. Maybe you were too shy to ask them out or didn’t realise they were interested in you. Whatever the reason, it’s easy to look back and wonder what might have been. The good news is that there is always time to pursue a missed opportunity. So if you’re still interested in someone, contact them and see if they’re open to going on a date. The worst that can happen is that they say no, and then you’ll know where you stand.
Staying in a bad relationship
It’s never easy to leave a bad relationship, but it’s always better to walk away than to stay and suffer. It’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of negativity, and staying in a bad relationship can cause long-lasting damage to your self-esteem and mental health.
Many people stay in bad relationships because they are afraid of being alone, feel like they have invested too much time in the relationship to walk away, or fear hurting their partner’s feelings. But staying in a bad relationship will only hurt you and your partner in the long run.
If you find yourself in a bad relationship, take action. First, talk to your partner and work through your issues together. If that doesn’t work, seek the help of a therapist or counsellor who can help you navigate your emotions and guide you towards a healthier path.
If you feel you’re not in the right situation, dare end it. It’s better to be alone than to be in a bad relationship. Take the time to heal and focus on yourself; eventually, you will find someone who truly deserves you.
Leaving a loved one
Sometimes, people leave the person they love and don’t even know why. It’s easy to get caught up in the stress of everyday life and take the people we love for granted. But if you genuinely love someone, show them and make them a priority in your life.
If you find yourself in a situation where you’re considering leaving a loved one, take a step back and try to identify why you feel this way. For example, is it because of something they did or because you’re having a tough time? Once you understand the root of the problem, you can work towards a solution.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take some time to focus on yourself and your own needs. But remember the person you love. Try to communicate with them and show them they are still a priority in your life. With time and effort, you can strengthen your relationship and rebuild the love that brought you together in the first place.
Dating a married person
Dating a married person is never a good idea. This type of relationship is built on deceit, lies, and cheating, and it will only lead to heartbreak and disappointment.
The unmarried party will also be led to expect something that could or might never happen, which is being in a serious relationship with the married person. It might also bother your conscience that you are destroying the married couple’s life – worse still, if they have kids. This relationship will never work out and be fun. It will always be filled with doubt and then, eventually, on your list of dating regrets.
If you find yourself in a situation where you’re attracted to a married person, take a step back and assess the situation. Ask yourself if you’re willing to be a part of something fundamentally wrong that goes against the principles of honesty and trust.
If you’re already involved with a married person, it’s never too late to walk away. But first, take some time to focus on yourself and your values. Then, seek the help of a therapist or counsellor who can guide you towards a healthier path and help you heal from the emotional trauma of being in a toxic relationship.
Putting your career before love
Many people put their careers before their love lives, especially in their 20s and 30s. While building a successful career is important, make time for relationships and social connections. Without these, life can feel empty and unfulfilling.
Try to balance your career and social life to avoid this regret. Make time for dating and socializing, even if it means sacrificing some work-related activities. Building meaningful relationships can enhance your career by providing support, motivation, and inspiration.
Being a badly behaved partner
Being a bad partner is another common dating regret. Sometimes people behave poorly in relationships, treating their partners with disrespect, indifference, or neglect. This can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and sadness.
Be mindful of your behaviour in relationships. Treat your partner with kindness, respect, and empathy. Communicate openly and honestly, and work together to resolve conflicts constructively and positively. Remember that your behaviour in relationships can have a lasting impact on your partner and your own sense of self-worth and happiness.
Dumping someone harshly
It is natural to want to end a relationship that is no longer working out but do so with kindness and empathy. A harsh breakup can leave a lasting impact on the other person and weigh heavily on your conscience. It is important to remember that the person you are breaking up with is a human being with feelings, and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
When breaking up with someone, try to do it in person and choose a comfortable private location. Be honest about your feelings, but avoid being unnecessarily hurtful. Listen to the other person’s point of view and try to be understanding of their emotions. If you need to take a break from the conversation to collect your thoughts, do so respectfully and come back to the conversation when you are ready.
It is also important to avoid ghosting or cutting off contact with the person without any explanation. This can leave the other person feeling confused, hurt, and rejected. It is important to communicate your intentions clearly and honestly, even if it is difficult.
Dating someone for the wrong reasons
Many people enter into relationships for superficial reasons, such as physical attraction, financial gain, or social status. While these may be appealing in the short term, they are unlikely to sustain a healthy and fulfilling relationship in the long run.
Be honest about why you are attracted to a person and whether your reasons are genuine and sincere. If you enter into a relationship for the right reasons, it will likely bring you happiness or fulfilment in the long term.
Instead, focus on building relationships with people who share your values, interests, and goals. Take the time to get to know the person deeper and ensure you are compatible in key areas such as communication, emotional intimacy, and shared values.
Dating regrets are a natural part of the dating experience. However, by being mindful of these common regrets and making conscious choices in your relationships, you can avoid unnecessary heartache and create fulfilling and rewarding connections with others. Remember to be honest, respectful, and kind in your relationships and to prioritise your well-being and happiness. By doing so, you can create a dating experience that is joyful, fulfilling, and free from regrets.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px”][vc_column_text]Image: Uncanny Valley, Adobe Stock[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Review: Botis Seva's BLKDOG
New Post has been published on https://thekolsocial.com/elementor-33050/
Review: Botis Seva's BLKDOG
Hip hop has long stepped off the concrete streets of the Bronx, a culture that rose in the lean mean years of the 1970s when New York City was flat broke. Or at least, when it came to the welfare of African American people. With the backdrop of drugs rampaging the communities, neglected buildings crumbling down around them, a lack of jobs and school funding, the energetic urban youth refused to be hemmed in. A cultural revolution was born; a movement that rapidly spread from the street corner and across the globe. It even found itself treading the boards of the theatrical stage.
Whilst the art form may find itself in new territory, the sentiments behind it are no less important as a means of expression and self identity for the youth of today. Hip Hop has always been more than music. Choreographer Botis Seva’s BLKDOG gives testament to that: an emotionally charged dance performance infused with the empowerment, artistry, and value of hip-hop culture without losing sight of the deeply rooted social justice work in the community.
Raw in execution, BLKDOG  makes comment on how the young generation searches for coping mechanisms in a world that is not built for them. It peels back the vicious connection of how self-discovery leads to self-destruction. Through haunting childhood memories and adult life traumas, how do we fight through our vices to find a sense of peace.
In keeping with Hip Hop’s ethic of improvisation, with his powerhouse company Far From The Norm and guests, Seva generates his own unique style with original spins, fresh freezes, and new twists on power moves. Right off the bat, he push the boundaries of the origins and roots of street dance which is further emboldened by Torben Lars Sylvest’s dark musical score and the the hooded caps and padded costumes by Ryan Laight echo the protection and comfort of childhood. It’s wild, inspired and even humorous, despite its underlying tragic theme.
A moving and beautifully crafted performance that will have you body-popping in your seat. A must see.

EDITORS LETTER
New Post has been published on https://thekolsocial.com/?elementor_library=editors-letter
EDITORS LETTER
When I was in secondary school, I forgot I was black. In my eyes I was just another suburban kid with homework being my only real angst in life. That was despite the threat of being suspended if I dared to wear my hair in braids and somehow I never made it onto the netball team despite playing at district level.
It just never occurred to me that I was any different to my best mate – the very blonde – Melissa or my swimming pal Claire whose ginger hair caused her as much grief as my own, after a dip. Why would I? I was just a kid.
That was until one Sunday I found myself upon a Pentecostal church in the midst of leafy Hampshire. For the first time, I encountered a large group of Black people who had gathered from miles around. I returned week after week, not because I was particularly religious, but to be surrounded by those who looked like me. Just like many of those present, it was all about identifying with a group.
We seem to be doing the same thing in our workplace whether that is down to racism, misogyny or some other bias. Identity has many layers to it which affects the way we develop our affinities. Whilst progressive companies are doing much to introduce inclusion initiatives, for others it feels more about the optics and less about real measurable change.
Achieving diversity should not be viewed as the goal but the outcome of maximising a company’s performance by understanding the power of seeing a situation from different perspectives. I hope that you enjoy this edition of The KOL Social magazine which aims to bring you alternative views from a range of people who can share their unique experiences.
