I love cruelty mixed with passion."

SURPRISING THING
"That I am a prude, and I love poetry particularly If You Forget Me by Pablo Neruda or any sonnet by Shakespeare."
If you forget me
I want you to know one thing.  You know how this is:  if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window,  if I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log,  everything carries me to you,  as if everything that exists,  aromas, light, metals,  were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me.  Well, now,  if little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you little by little.  If suddenly you forget me do not look for me,  for I shall already have forgotten you.  If you think it long and mad,  the wind of banners that passes through my life,  and you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots,  remember that on that day,  at that hour,  I shall lift my arms and my roots will set off to seek another land.  But if each day,  each hour,  you feel that you are destined for me with implacable sweetness,  if each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me,  ah my love, ah my own,  in me all that fire is repeated,  in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,  my love feeds on your love, beloved,  and as long as you live it will be in your arms without leaving mine.

Ghost Ship Wreck, 2012 / Epson Ultrachrome HDR Print scratched with a razor / 40 x 60 inches Permanent Collection Contemporary Museum of Art San Diego
CHRISTOPHER RUSSELL ARTIST FEATURED IN DESIRE HAUNTS US IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY.
“Dealing less with the supernatural than the psychosomatic, Christopher Russell rouses ghosts. Within his scratched photographs, fractured glass panes, and hazy metallic paints, there are haunting recollections - the kind of outlier memories that plague our psyche well after childhood. Through a purposefully repressive fog, we habitually revisit the monsters of our innermost mentality, and find ourselves the protagonist of a lifelong plight - a cinematic tale evocatively illustrated by Russell's eerie ships and spectral trees. Like a folkloric odyssey into a cognitive web, his mixed-media works and installations traipse through places of fragility and wistfulness; evidence of the divine and unsettling encounters inherent to our complex mortality.”

Featured artist Christina Poblador in the DESIRE issue has this to say about her superb work.
"My work is a statement. Rooted in inherited culture and personal and collective narratives of the Philippines, it is unashamed of its origins. Exploring themes of oppression, reclamation, and freedom, I use glass, scent, sound, installation, and performance to represent untold stories."
Tumblr media
"My embodied autobiographical and mythological narratives take a stand for the role of eros and beauty in rewriting my identity as a Filipina woman and in awakening the “feeling” body in our collective awareness.
It is rooted in the archetype of the divine feminine—the part in all of us that thinks, feels, and dreams. It pays homage, in particular, to the lost language of the Babaylan—the archetypal Filipino goddess gifted in healing the spirit and body."
Tumblr media
"My work is sensual and erotic, based on intuition and carnal knowledge. It is about learning how to celebrate despite the pains of being alive through the seemingly mundane act of sensing. It seeks to make people aware of the unimaginable pleasures and struggles that exist in places that are not the center."

The Polish poster design for Jodorowsky’s 1970 film HOLY MOUNTAIN is as modern as the film itself. The Laboratory interviewed Jodorowsky for an upcoming issue. A profound experience. 'Endless Poetry’ his latest film just premiered in Cannes and a hungry world waits for the very particular light that Jodorowsky shines on humanity. Exciting and thrilling that this visionary giant is making a planned series of five films.

ARTIST - ASHKAN HONARVAR
Ashkan's work examines the ontology of human existence. In his collages he explores how humans relate to one another and the fluid, infinite universe we inhabit. His work sizzles in your brain, electrifying your senses as he plumbs the depths of desire, death and possibility that co-exist in the human form. His images are familiar, yet when thrown together topsy turvy into his own surgical mix master, they arrive re-formed, newly built and deeply arresting. His subjects are unwittingly made vulnerable, dismembered and put back together, bending to the mercy of their master. We are reminded of the futility of our belief that we control our own destinies, as our bodies betray us with petrifying speed and certainty. Desire is always there beating under the surface, peeping through at the voyeur while the disfigured subject peeps proudly back.

ARIEL ZUNIGA - WRITER
Ariel Zuniga is just wild about pens. The search for his hearts desire takes him all over the world, to pen conventions, flea markets and into the secret universe of the pen collector. Here is a snippet...
"My object of desire is a fountain pen. Yes. A fountain pen. A cylindrical object containing a reserve of ink that goes with me everywhere. I use it to make notes, to draw and sign, or just for the pleasure of it, as a fetish. Desire is “the affective movement towards something we wish for.” It is to crave or to covet.
Tumblr media
Fountain pen collectors talk about their “holy grail pen.” It could be easy to think that the rare pen with all the mythology behind it is the pinnacle of the desired pen, the absolute holy grail, but a desire is not formulaic. A simple and common pen, let's say a Parker 51, is, no doubt, the holy grail pen for many collectors.
It is probably the most famous pen ever. It changed the way we conceived fountain pens around 1940. And as a collector, you have to have at least one. It is simple to fill and so easy to write with. Parker 51 lovers have been wondering for years why any other pen had to be invented. But we are all different, and desire underlines our differences."

Anne Menke who shot the front cover of the DESIRE issue sees the world beautiful and the world responds!

In her work for DESIRE there is a quiet urgency present. A smoldering direct gaze that burns into you. You may flick through the pages but then you are called back to these women as they beg another look and another. The unspoken is present. Desire flickers.
There is always another side to everything and here are the images that blossom and lighten the world, the one’s you haven’t seen. The other side of DESIRE. Joy.

Le Surrealisme C’est Moi
Tumblr media
Above: Alan Selka reads his work at a launch party for DESIRE - The Standard Hotel, West Hollywood.
Here is a taste of Alan's beautifully written appreciate of the great Salvador Dali and how he gained an audience with the Maestro by bringing him the thing the artist desired most in the world, besides money... a gift.
"My first knock on the low, salt-bleached door was answered by a stout Spanish maid who abruptly demanded my name, then slammed the door in my face. Within a couple of minutes she was back with the news that Dali didn’t know me, but before the door could close I played my trump card. Legend had it that Dali was quite unable to resist gifts. I was therefore carrying a full-length cape, covered in pheasant feathers, which I had recently made and which I thought would be an appropriate token of my esteem.
As if by magic the door opened wide and I stepped into the tiny matted hallway within the sanctuary at Port Lligat - where I took a seat on Mae West's lips as the maid scurried away to inform someone of the intruder."

DESIRE
Desire is the wonderful in between of a thing. The wanting. The waiting. The needing. The longing and the dreaming. When the object of your desire is obtained, the emotion slips out of reach and evaporates back into the ether. Consider the printed form of DESIRE, physically wanted things captured on a page in ink but this only propels the reader forward on a deeper journey. There are no full stops in this grand tour just a tantalizing lifting of the veil for a singular second and on you go, deeper into the in-between of wanting and having.
