I have an unpopular opinion for you. I hate the expression "Normalize"

Normalize this.

Normalize that.

Even if the thing you are advocating is something I agree with, I just want them to STFU.

That and ending a tweet with "Pass this on."

No. I refuse. On principle.

I actually one hundred percent agree with this. I saw a post recently saying something along the lines of “normalize not getting on with your family” and was like ... this is already normal, why are we trying to turn this into a Social Issue or whatever? I also resent being told what to do or how to feel about something, and I also hate buzzwords, so being ordered to “normalize” something is infuriating to me.

It seems like it’s part of this larger culture of wanting to soften all of life’s edges, and that just isn’t possible. You cannot shape the world to never hurt you, never make you feel uncomfortable, never treat you in a ‘less than ideal’ way... Interacting with other people is messy and uncomfortable and even the best-intentioned people say or do ‘problematic’ things sometimes. 

The people that I know who make these demands tend to have smaller, more isolated lives, and fewer relationships, and I do think there’s a relationship there. If you have such high expectations of others’ behavior and such rigid definitions of what’s problematic and what isn’t, or how you think other people should think about things... you are going to have a very difficult time coexisting with others, and a very lonely, angry life.

Two things I want to do more of this year are be more vocal about fics that I’ve loved and make more art. Soooo I’m going to start posting my recs accompanied by art bc fic authors are incredible and deserve so much love and praise and I personally want to be better about doing more than just dropping kudos on ao3!

Kicking this off with New Heights by my talented friend @adriancatrin - a sweet zukka getting together/coming to terms with feelings story with a beautifully written Zuko & Azula dynamic. The dialogue made me laugh out loud, the characterizations are spot on, and the actual ‘getting together’ moment is incredibly tender and soft.

Go read and show Adrian some love!
