Quote
Tell the king; the fair wrought house has fallen No shelter has Apollo, nor sacred laurel leaves The fountains are now silent; the voice is stilled. It is finished.
The final recorded words of the last Oracle of Delphi, 395 AD. (via iagoe)

VIDEO:Introducing French Afro-Cuban Twin Sisters Ibeyi & Their Yoruba Doom Soul
Ibeyi, made up of Cuban-born, Paris-based twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Díaz, is an electronic doom soul duo who are forging a new spiritual sound with their debut EP Oya. The 19-year-old musicians are XL Recordings‘ newest signees, and their introductory singles “Oya” and “River” possess a hypnotic blend of hip-hop, electronica, and blues infused with Yoruba prayers and folk songs that will transport you to a higher realm upon first listen.
Singing in French, English, Spanish and Yoruba, Ibeyi count among their primary influences Nina Simone, Meshell Ndegeocello, James Blake and their late father, the celebrated Cuban jazz percussionist Miguel “Anga” Diaz. Ibeyi’s vocal range, which wavers from the raspy and wraith-like to the sonorous and divine, is ideal for their sonic palette which revels in the phantasmagorical groove of liturgical Yoruba songs. Besides singing in Yoruba–which was brought to Cuba by West African slaves–Ibeyi honor their father’s legacy and Afro-Cuban heritage through their percussive production and use of live instruments. Beatsmith Naomi plays both the cajón and the batá while Lisa-Kaindé remains more in tune with the musical mythos of Ibeyi’s sound by weaving Yoruba lore deeply into their lyrics. “River” is dedicated to the goddess Oshun (the mother of the Ibeyi, and their first single and EP are both named for  Oya (the benevolent orisha who took the Ibeyi in after Oshun was accused of witchcraft for birthing twins and kicked them out).

Dear Students,
Soon we will begin our time together.
Before we meet, I’d like you to do a few things…
For our first class you’ll need to bring
1 roll of scotch tape
I like clear and shiny kind better than the ‘invisible’ tape but either will work
1 black Papermate Flair pen,
    medium point
1 box of 24 Crayola Crayons
no less and no more than 24!
1 three ring binder
   medium size (1.5 inch spine)
100 plastic sheet protectors
get the clearest ones they have, and get medium or heavy weight, not economy, load    them into your three ring binder.
 You will also need…
One dozen black papermate flair pens, medium point, PA8430152
One dozen Uniball Vision Stick Roller Ball Pens, Fine Point, Black ink #60126
Note: Get the one with the gray body. Fine point, not ‘micro point’ and Vision Stick not ‘Vision Elite’ –
All your other supplies will be included with your art kit. Your lab fee for the kit is $80.00.  Payable with Wisc Card or by check to Art Department, University of Wisconsin-Madison.  You’ll need to pay your lab fee in the art office.  It’s right up the hall from our classroom.
 BOOKS YOU WILL NEED
 Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice
Ivan Brunetti
Yale University Press 2011
ISBN 9780300170993
Whatcha Mean, Whats a Zine?
Esther Pearl Watson and Mark Todd
Graphia 2006
ISBN 10:0618563156
CHARACTER NAMES:
In my class, we all go by different names, names of characters we chose for ourselves and we use them for the entire semester. You are free to tell each other your real names, of course, but in class we will use the name you’ve chosen. You can pick a character that exists in the image world – like Medusa or Chef Boyardee or Shrek. Or yu can pick a ‘character’ that exists in the real world —like Sophocles or Beyonce or Ruth Bader Ginsberg or you can choose a character that is an ‘entity’ of some sort, like NASA or Super One Foods, or Iceland or The Ramones.  You can choose a character of any gender, from any point in time, any genre.  Think of a name you’d like to hear said out loud over the semester. For example, I love wookies, so one semester I was Professor Chewbacca and I was so happy when anyone said my name.  In our class, I’ll be Professor SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)
You’ll keep your name for the whole semester and then your name will be retired.  You can use it again, but no other student will be able to use it.
Please let me know what character name you’ve chosen for your self before August 24th.
Finally, I’ve kept this tumblr page for my students for the last four of five years. You can go though the archives and see what sort of work students have done, what the assignments are like, and what sort of extra credit options there are for you do do.
I am very much looking forward to hearing from you about your choice of character name very soon!  Don’t over-think it.
Professor SETI

Are you a fan of fairy tales, publisher’s bindings, or just appreciate a beautiful, old book? If so, get ready to see one of the loveliest series of fairy tales to come out of the late 19th and early 20th centuries!
Pictured are twelve books of fairy tales which were compiled and edited by the Scots poet, novelist, and literary critic, Andrew Lang. Each volume is distinguished by its own color, and and the complete series contains 437 unique tales.
The top picture from left to right displays The Brown Fairy Book, The Crimson Fairy Book, The Pink Fairy Book, The Red Fairy Book, The Orange Fairy Book, The Yellow Fairy Book, The Olive Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, The Blue Fairy Book, The Violet Fairy Book, and The Grey Fairy Book. All of these books are first editions and come with the original slipcase, and some still even have their dust covers.
Now you are probably anxious to see the covers of these books, and perhaps take a peek into some of the interior illustrations? Have no fear, as later this week and next week there will be three more posts featuring these beautiful books.
