personally massively a fan of the idea that, regardless of his best efforts, Kindaichi absolutely has a massive crush on Oikawa in his first year, not even really super romantically, but very much like "beautiful older boy sometimes tells me good job" gay awakening crush which everyone makes fun of him for but he's also aware is sort of pathetic because Oikawa is such a brat and its really like having a crush on the worst person you know, BUT Kindaichi's embarassment over this whole affair is over shadowed by Iwaizumi, who cannot stop his compulsive competition with anyone who even looks at Oikawa, and honestly "in love with an asshole" is significantly less embarassing than "competing for the attention of your boyfriend with a 15 year old."

If you think about it, both Atsumu and Hoshiumi work as substitutes to Kagehina when Hinata and Kageyama are in different teams. Atsumu's ability is pretty on par with Kageyama's: he's likely the second best setter in the country, and comes toe to toe with Kageyama in terms of serving; not to mention the personality traits they share. Hoshiumi's similarity with Hinata is more low-key, but he still works as a good stand in for Hinata if you consider: a) height, b) the fact he's also a master in aerial battles (Although his style differs from Hinata's.) So, tldr; Atsumu is to Hinata like Hoshiumi is to Kageyama.

However, if you also think about it, the fandom's general perception of these duos is VASTLY different. Obviously Atsuhina is a thing, and even if you don't ship them romantically, many people still enjoy the duo's platonic relationship. Meanwhile, I've NEVER seen the slightest suggestion of anything even close to a Kageyama/Hoshiumi fic. I wasn't sure if this was just due to me being late to the party, but nope. There's a whopping 33 fics tagged with this pairing on AO3.

Anyway, I chalked this disparity up to the characters' personalities. Atsumu gives off the vibe that he'd absolutely get between Hinata and Kageyama if given the chance; while Hoshiumi would rather DIE than be caught in the drama between those two
